GTA V announced [2011] , [2021-11-11]

So it seems like the online is basically an online mode for GTAV that will evolve into its own game is more content is released, eventually adding new mechanics that depart from what is included in GTAV. Sounds like they plan to continue this for a number of years, which suggests to me that eventually GTA Online will be available for next-gen.

I hope so, it kills me to see such a big game going on 2005 hardware with no PC or next gen version.

The amazing thing is how damned good it looks for being on such old kit. Their artists and tech guys have done an absolutely amazing job.

They've made me reconsider which next-gen games I'm buying, because this game is going to take up a lot of my time.

I'm still skeptical that the footage is from a console. I hope it is, but part of me says it is a PC running at console settings to keep a perfect 30fps.

I wonder when they are going to show XB360 footage - which is strange they haven't? All the current footage has been from the PS3 per R*. I wonder if it has something to do with how large the game is (rumored 40GB-47GB in size), and the setup required on (streaming/loading/etc...) on getting this to work across all Xbox 360 sku's, especially the core version. Just seem strange...

Rockstar, so far, has been one of the most honest companies in terms of their promotional screenshots and videos. They haven't done bullshots, at least starting with Red Dead Redemption, and their videos have all been console gameplay. You never know if they could break that honest streak, but I doubt it.

I think it is as simple as them being british, and ps3 being the prevalent console there, and that making them see ps3 as the to-go console for public showcase. They could very well be trying to apease people who were burnt with the poor ps3 performance of GTAIV.

Both PS3 and Xbox 360 have a mandatory 8 GB install. People with Xbox 360 skus that don't have a HDD will need to install to a USB stick with a minimum 15mb/s read. It ships on two DVDs on Xbox 360. The PS3 version could be bigger with better textures, but I doubt anywhere in the 40-47GB range. If anything the PS3 version will just have all of the languages on it, rather than having localized versions of the game in different languages like you probably would on the 360. Xbox 360 version is basically 16GB, but I could see the PS3 version being in the 20-25GB range.

I don't see it. I see a large open environment with tons of people and vehicles all on screen as the camera pans around with no stutter or pop-in. Not very console like at all.

They made some pretty bold claims about their draw distance in this one.

I think one of the most amazing features is the way we handle lighting in the game to maintain a consistent look despite the constraints on realistic lighting and shadows on current hardware. Every single light we place in the world is stored, streamed, and laid into the map, even into the distance. The entire world draws all the time: You can fly high in the air at one corner of the map, look over the miles of city and skyscrapers, over the hills and desert to the furthest ridges of the most distant mountains. It’s all there and visible. That’s amazing to see. But the really cool bit is that you can see a street light in a distant town, fly toward it for kilometers until the street itself is visible and the light bulb eventually comes into view. It’s amazing. It’s a level of solidity that I’ve never seen before. It brings the world alive in an incredibly realistic and organic way. That all the lighting the artists have placed to fill out streets and buildings form, at a macro level, the shape of the settlements themselves, that you can look over the desert and see the little towns and trailer parks miles away and get a feel for the road layout even in total darkness and know that it’s not faked, that you can go there: That’s cool.

Or it could be clever to simply show the "worst" and making sure that no one gets their hopes up to much..

Or it simply is the best looking version of the games, maybe they learned how to cell a console with a 50GB disc to the world

I see no reason not to expect a PC version at this point. The PC version of GTA4 wasn't announced for 3-4 months after the console launch and Rockstar are currently hiring PC developers to work on pc versions of their games (without saying what those games are). Plus they've never denied there will be a PC version (like they did with RDR) they've simply declined to comment on it. I wouldn't be suprised if they announce the PC version simultaneously with the next gen console version. Well worth waiting a few extra months for IMO.

I'm getting it right away and I'll switch to next-gen whenever it comes out. I think they'll only release GTA Online without the GTA5 campaign on next-gen.

Looks damn cool for an open world game on a ps3 !!! Damn ! I get bored of gta very soon but the tech here looks beautiful for what it is doing.

Thats a big plus ! The first thing one notices in every game on consoles is how lights n shadows dissappear after afew meters and all you see in the distance is flat geometry. If they can render lights far away into the distance too, then I might have to buy it just for that ! I am totally broke after Diablo 3 preorder and my recent purchases. Lts see if I can get some discounit or deal somewhere.

Must.Resist.Tempation.To.Preorder.

It's a bit odd and quite stupid on my part, but every time a new GTA comes out, I get super-excited, pay my entry fee like an obedient, mindless fanboy-drone, and then I find out - again - that I really don't like R* games. Like, at all. The only exceptions have been Red Dead Redemption and Vice City.

What were your problems with the other ones?

I think one of the biggest improvements, that has gone sort of unmentioned, is that they've fixed their horrible shooting mechanics. That was a barrier for a lot of people really enjoying the game. They got a lot better with Red Dead Redemption, and then even better in Max Payne 3. This looks like a bit of both, but closer to RDR.

I, for one, am completely excited to be a mindless fanboy-drone for another GTA game.
