You may remember Grand Raid Offroad from news we did quite some time ago. This racing/raid game promised a total liberty with the car. After a long time without any new informations, the game is now back and announced for PC and Xbox 360. 5 new screens are available.

Looks so-so. I guess it has the "PC port" feel. Not bad looking, but I expect more. PGR3 really has set the bar high for racing games.

As a next-gen Smugglers-Run I think it looks very good. Dirty vehicles in sandy deserts won't have the shiny reflections of pristene city-racers. There's only so much you can add to a desert environment to make it look better. In motion with a wobbly camera I reckon it'll fool most initial onlookers into thinking it's real.

so I guess real-time motion blur is possible now?

Motion blur has been used in some form or another ever since PS2 launched.

The motion blur on those pics looks much better than that used so far, so i'm not sure about the validity of those screens, but i guess motion blur has been possible in realtime for a long time.

Motion trails are the blurring done in current generation games, and they've been in practice since before PS2. Higher quality temporal AA can have a game sampling from very fast framerates and would be intensive.

cars need much more detail / polygons and textures... like plastic toys
I can see what you mean by that, they have a Ridge Racer type feel to them. If that makes any sense.
Im glad the sand doesnt look like shiny plastic anymore.

Personally for a racing game I don't care much for the looks, it's all down to how the car feels, and what is especially important is how the camera reacts. Having a camera that mimics the forces the driver would actually be feeling has a positivly *massive* effect on how good a driving sim feels. Feeling of centre of mass is also important. Colin mcrae games have always felt very poor in both these ways to me... Rally champ' 2000 was very good, etc.

The 3rd pic Lysander posted is fantastic. The draw distance is very impressive really.

I'm also a big fan of long distance racing, especially over smoothly varying terrain. In fact, this game looks perfect to my tastes :)
