Final Fantasy XIII [PS3, X360]

Well, my copy of AC Complete finally arrived and I just finished playing the demo and watching the new version of Advent Children.

First, the movie: I haven't watched it in a few years, but it looks absolutely fantastic and really got me in the mood to start the game back up again (I have a half-finished game of FF7 going from last year). I'll probably need to watch it again just to digest everything, but what a beautiful piece of work!

FFXIII Demo: The battle system is great! I really like being able to fire off combos whenever I'm ready, i.e. if I only need a two hit combo, I can just wait for the ATB bar to fill two slots before initiating the attack. I also like the juggling aspect, it reminds me of Star Ocean a bit. Visually, the game is stunning and the CG is on par with Advent Children. Animation is quite a bit better looking than previous games. There's quite a bit more movement animation, which may be interpreted by players as 'lag'. For instance, your character has a turning animation, as well as a start and stop animation.

Lightning is a very cool main character -- probably the best since Cloud, in my opinion.

On the AC Complete set: This is a very nice set indeed. There are two jewel cases with a semi transparent slip-case. The demo case features Lightning seated with sword in lap -- very cool pose, possible international cover art?

There's an interview on IGN suggesting that FFXIII may hit the U.S. a lot sooner than we expect, as they've started recording the voices and translating the text already, rather than wait until the Japanese version is done like last time.

Is it supposed to release simultaneously for PS3 and xb360 in the west?

Yep, and they wont be starting work on the 360 port until the Jap version is complete (so they say anyway). I have no idea how long the porting process is likely to take but im betting itll be anything but quick.

We'll see. Either the 360 version will also be done sooner (considering how I think FFXIII is mostly developed on PC that's not that unlikely I think) and is already in process, or we'll see a time difference between the PS3 and 360 versions.

Otherwise, what's the point eh? ;)

Considering how they've started english voice recording, it wouldn't surprise me if Sony threw a little money at them to release a US timed exclusive...

Unless, of course, MS already threw them some money to make sure it was a simultaneous release...

SB

Disc space may be the only difficulty. Given how impressive the FMVs are, I hope they don't resort to substantially lower bitrates on the 360. Disc swapping is no trouble for this kind of game.

From what I gathered, they already ported the engine to the 360 but it seems that the port of the game itself hasn't started yet or is in an early stage.

What I take from that is that Square Enix were using FFXIII as an opportunity to develope a cross platform engine similar to what Capcom has done. Except where it appears the X360 is the lead platform for Capcom, the PS3 may be the lead platform for Square Enix.

Here's to hoping they have at the very least the same level of success.

Except Capcom managed to release Dead Rising in the middle of 2006 and a multitude of titles on the same tech since, and Square Enix will maybe release FFXIII in 2009 in one territory. If they intend on using this tech for much longer this generation, then they're hoping for a long generation.

I've just finished watching HD footage of the demo section.

Character modeling is exceptional, as expected. Texturing is nothing special however, it doesnt even look like they're streaming them.
I look forward to seeing the Xbox version and the full res effects/4xMSAA that will accompany it.
(In an effect laden game such as this, I can't help but be distracted by the downrezzed effects. I sort of wish this issue hadnt been pointed out to me, as I notice it in just about every PS3 game now)

I wouldn't expect any tangible graphical improvements for the 360 version from SE, not if it takes any actual effort. At best I think we'd see something like Soul Calibur 4, with the 360 version rendered at higher res then downscaled (not this exact same effect, just some half-assed choice of settings to use all the EDRAM).
