Final Fantasy XIII [PS3, X360]

From an interview linked earlier.

---We couldn't verify character growth in the demo, but it doesn't seem like character growth is going to be limited to just learning new attacks and spells?
Toriyama: Of course, characters will gain new skills and magic as they grow. Just, please wait for future information on how the characters are raised. Of course, it's not just straight levelling, but we expect to implement a some type of system as was done with the Sphere Board in FFX and Licensed Board in FFXII. Going off on a tangent, but this game's menu system is pretty amazing. I said the traditional blue background with white borders was fine, but the staff worked hard and created a completely fresh menu screen.

The FFXII demo was a hallow shell of what that game was actually like, too. Hell, it takes about 20 hours in the retail version before you're ever given enough abilities to really exploit the gambit system. Anyone who expects this short XIII preview to be representative of the full product is hopelessly delusional.

I'm pretty sure the "levelling up" in FFXIII will be near identical to The Last Remnant.

In battle you make "chains" (you get rewards for getting 100 chains, 125 etc.) a bit like FFXII. after a battle you simply "get" upgrades to your stats and after a while you're up on "Battle Rank" (level.)

Just because they don't show you XP, doesn't mean it's not there.

No they have already said it that the leveling will be around the same as FF X and XII. I hated the leveling in last remnant so it would be a massive turn off.

I've just read the preview at 1UP.

I'm happy to hear that there will not be random battles.
I'm not sure if I like that there is no XP and leveling though.

The graphics look really nice so far. The framerate will likely improve once they start optimizing before release.

Well the battles might not be random. But the bad guys do keep re spawning at the exact same locations. So like if you clear a corridor of bad guys and move to the next area if you turn around and go back where you came from they will be there again.

Is the demo fun ?

Not really. But then I don't think any Final Fantasy game would be fun if you just took just a 45 min slice out of it. FF is about leveling up, earning gil, going to stores, customizing your character. And there is no XP system or equipment in the demo.

It's really more about getting a sneak peak at the tech, the cinematics, and the new characters.

That's true. I remember long ago I fooled around with upgrading my weapons, playing mini-games against NPCs, and fudging with special abilities. The cinematics definitely was a big draw.

I was wondering if they made any significant gameplay improvement for short play.

I tell yah, Square sure knows how to bundle in free stuff. They gave DQ away for free with the FFXII demo, and now you get ACC free with the FFXIII demo. :D

Seriously though, anyone who enjoyed AC (I'm sure I'm not the only one) should definitely consider picking up ACC, with or without the demo. IMO, it really does make the original release look incomplete, in comparison (story wise). If you are a fan and get it, keep in mind that there's content all the way until it takes you back to the menu screen.

Is the movie region coded ? (I assume AC means Advent Children ?).

I have a friend who's crazy about that movie. He keeps watching it non-stop.

Oh that's right. They revised the region coding. Blu-ray Region A is the Americas, and North Asia outside China (including Japan)

Region A: North America, Central America, South America, Japan, Taiwan, North Korea, South Korea, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia.
Region B: Europe, Greenland, French territories, Middle East, Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
Region C: India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Mainland China, Pakistan, Russia, Central and South Asia.

I haven't had the chance to watch the whole movie yet. But I just popped it in to check the audio options. The English voice track is pretty terrible indeed. Both the mix and the voice acting are garbage. And ya only Japanese subs.
