Fallout 3

I'm watching the llve demo as I write.
Normally I hate people complaining about gameplay from videos but I'm having hard time imagining the fun of optionally realtime, optionally "vault tech assisted" combat.

I guess vault tech gets upgraded as you go, and hopefully with squad members(?) it will have some strategy elements to it, but stopping the game and targeting body parts doesn't seem to be best of both worlds to me.

I also don't like the spritety looking camera zoomins (Oblivion had them too) and rotations. What's up with that.
They are the only guys I know that cannot do that properly.

While I'm at it, I also hate the music, humor and settings. :| It was interesting enough at the time of first two games, but not anymore.

I guess you can say I'm keeping my expectations low, not to get disappointed.

IGN hands on

Before I go on, though, please understand -- calling Fallout 3 one of the most impressive videogames of the year in a season that has already brought us Metal Gear Solid 4 and Grand Theft Auto IV isn't meant to be hyperbole. Even in its unoptimized stage (all the content is there, development is just about polish from now until October), Fallout 3 is still one of the most engaging and playable titles this side of Liberty City...

No matter which save file was played, though, it was obvious that Fallout 3 is a much better looking game than Oblivion was. In fact, there are twice as many objects drawn onscreen when compared to The Elder Scrolls, and both the first- and third-person views show off completely different visual representations (as opposed to Oblivion's quickie-swap method of superimposing a simple character model in front of the first-person camera and calling it "third").
There are plenty of cool little details found in the environments as well. Dust is continuously carried by the wind as you traverse the grayish wasteland; tires and other automobile wreckage looks as distinctive and unique as the real thing; and the clothing and appearance of NPCs are not only dissimilar from person to person, but they also say a lot about the personality of the person you're talking to. In other words, Fallout 3 is a beautiful game, and the best part is that it doesn't have anywhere near the pop-in or tearing that Oblivion had.

Here's a question:

If I imported Fallout on 360 (banned in Australia), will I be able to buy the DLC for it? Even if I bothered using a silver Live account based in the States?

If DLC will be on Marketplace in your region then I'd say it will work. I haven't seen any case of DLC not working - it may happen you can't download it (case in Europe in some countries) but play it? I don't think so.
That said, I've been mistaken in my life at least once before. ;)

Why are the enemies so lame? :( The game looks awesome, and beautiful , but the enemies while they look fearsome, behave like pansies. I mean a bullet hits them but they keep doing what they were doing! and the bullets they fire are like"Pew! Pew!" WHY???!?!?oh Why?

Sizeable content for DLC (PC/360)

http://www.videogaming247.com/2008/...-dlc-equivalent-to-oblivions-kotn-says-hines/

"“I couldn’t even tell you right now what the DLC would be, but our plans are for substantial stuff,” he said. “The equivalent of things like Knights of the Nine for Oblivion, where it provides many hours of gameplay, not just a one-off thing of an item (or items) or a hangout, or things like that.”

Todd Howard used the word “substantial” to describe the additional content at E3, where he also said it would be 360-exclusive. Hines told us, though, that the PC version would be getting the DLC as well.

“DLC is going to be exclusive to the PC and 360, not just 360,” he said. “Every platform has its advantages and disadvantages when it comes to DLC, and I assure you we are intimately aware of every technical, business, and fan-service aspect when it comes to DLC and any given platform.

“We felt [PC and 360 exclusivity] was the right thing to do for Fallout 3.”

Good to hear, at least on the PC part.

One of the few games I'm actually considering on PC. Oblivion was terribly unfinished, and really improved by user mods. Since that was Bethesda's MO for Morrowind too, I don't really believe that Fallout 3 will be different.

god i'd hope so , oblivion was basicly alaunch title for the 360.

True, but it's engine is extremely scalable. The amount of objects it can render is still pretty impressive. Heck, there are times when it makes my 4GHz E8400/overclocked 8800 GT rig start to lag (FPS < 30). Certainly not frequent, but there are moments of lower-than-desired FPS.

How is to extremely scalable?

The only experience i have with Besethdas engines are that they usually are horribly unoptimized and require a ton more hardware power than the visual fidelity on the screen would have you think.

What I meant was that detail can be subtracted or added from the scene via in-game control panel options (or config file edits) on a great scale.

looks like the 360 and pc verison is the one to get.

I really like the idea that dlc can be expansion packs so to speak . I hope more games do this. I'd love to see fable 2 add somethinga s big as knights of the nine . Thats just good stuff and it lets me go back and replay a game in the future and have a diffrent and improved experiance

Fallout 3's going to be a weird game to read (p)reviews for; too much baggage. Probably be the opposite of MGS4: people who love the series will be 'eh' to 'rage' about it, while others will enjoy it more.

Fortunately for Bethesda there aren't many Fallout fans, despite the amount of noise they make. :)

But seriously I hope you are right. Fallout 3 has failed to show anything that will make others (including Oblivion fans) happy.

Let's hope it's only because the game is difficult to demo.

I'm one of the few fallout fans, but I've remained pretty quiet because I've been happy with what they've shown. They haven't given out too much information yet, but I'm ok with that because it will be more surprise when I sit down to play it. I'm sure there will be more and more info leaked as we get closer to release.

Looking forward to it.

I'm in the same camp.

I'm guessing the "new Fallout" will be similar to the shift from Morrowind to Oblivion. Old schoolers will continue to hate it, people will post online in years to come about how much of a terrible game it was, but it'll be very successful, and most who play it will enjoy it.

My biggest fear right now where voiced in the eurogamer preview, that the gunplay will be bad.

The fighting in oblivion was sub-par at best, guns are alot harder to get the right feel of, aspecially if you have no experience with making shooters. With swords and melee weapons you dont notice so much, but with guns? They are much more accurate so you have to put alot more work into it.

My thoughts exactly. I haven't played oblivion but watching the videos of the sword swinging put me off enough to not try.If there's an option of combat in a game, then it should feel rewarding and polished.Swordplay in first person just felt awkward. With gunplay this time around, I was hoping I would jump in , as I really like the "black comedy" tones and the look of the environments. But watching the one demo, the gunplay looks really off. Its an RpG, I know, but IF they are giving the option to play it like a shooter, then it should feel rewarding to have made that choice while playing the game, not just a checkbox item on the box that has been put in there as a feature.

Guns are indeed harder, to get the right feel.No doubt not many games have that feel of the gun. COD series excels in that.
