It doesn't look sharpened though, because the PS4 version looks sharper from the higher resolution. I think it's just a difference in gamma. This wouldn't be the first game that looks darker on XB1.

Performance Analysis: Metro Redux

Apparently some of the PS4 images uploaded in this new Metro Redux DF article are only limited range 16-240 and are compared to full range 0-255 XB1 images (thank you HTupolev!).

It's really odd because the PS4 images shown in the old Digital Foundry vs Metro Redux DF face-off were all normal 0-255 full range and do look a bit more contrasted & sharper than in this recent article but were unfortunately only compared to the PS3 version.

This animated gif summarizes perfectly the situation:

I'm going to quit reading DF articles on day 1 and just wait a couple of days for the inevitable correction. If I had oversights like this in my work, I'd have been let go long ago :yep2:

I wonder if Digital Foundry could become the next THX ... DF certified! :)

Thank god we have DF and that they analyse pre-release software. The more devs react like Blizzard did, the better for the gamer...nice!

Keep going in DF!

Doesn't really matter, though, just as much as THX, since most people use their tv speakers and uncalibrated screens (which, imho has become a bit better, i.e. the manufacturer calibrations).

In essence, a majority of articles should end in "get the pc version"... but they don't... which is sad (i.e. not bashing DF here, but the pubs/devs treating PC like a stepchild).

It really isn't that simple.

I know. I've up until... some two years ago maybe, stood my ground that PC is the better system overall... but for some people other than me, the issues of Windows, drivers, installation, Steam, graphics settings etc. are too overwhelming (and.. who can blame them? They don't have a degree in CS... and they shouldn't need one, but somehow PC gaming became incredibly complicated). With a console... it's just "disc in" and "go"... well not anymore with patches and whatnot, but still miles apart from PC.

Either way... I find it mighty strange that DF decided to replay the PS4 version for the "current gen" comparison. And then even make their very own contrast bug AGAIN. I haven't read the article (and if it states "X1 pops more and has better blacks"), so I dunno if they even talk about this issue.

I write hi-dist code for server farms for a living and my preference for consoles has nothing to do with technical know how. Indeed when I gamed primarily on a PlayStation 3 I probably arose a worse experience vis-à-vis updates than my Windows 7 setup.

Even with PS+, which offers background app downloads, if you don't use your PS3 for a few weeks and turn on the console to game for a while then the chances are you'll have firmware and/or game updates to install which will hold you up for anywhere between 5 and 20 minutes.

Technical issues have never be greater on consoles and never been easier to manage on Windows. And if you want incomprehensible error codes, you should see the ones that PlayStations produce :yep2:

Yeah not so much anymore. I have people that don't use the ps4 I leave at a property of mine because they find it too complicated to use, and have instead hooked up a ps2 and play that.

Its true that consoles arent as simple anymore but they still are much simpler than a PC. Still I have found that games become too complicated too which may push people back to the old games.

The PS4 is kind of more stable than the PS3 and so far I havent faced too much update clusterfucks, failed updates, stupid loading times and crashes. The PS3 sometimes was a turn off with the errors, slow ass updates and annoying loading times just to access an app.

I dont know what makes the PS4 itself too complicated.

The PS4 is basically disc in and go. If you leave your PS4 in standby, everything is downloaded in the background. Installs take seconds or a few minutes tops.
