CES 2006 News & Announcements

I don't understand why the boxes need be so big. They should use a half-height CD box format to save plastic and storage space. I know a couple of people have either got installed or are looking to install a compact DVD storage bay where the discs are stored loose in a slide-out holder, ditching the shelves full of cases. Smart move IMO.

3D Consortium

http://www.sharp3d.com/technology/3dconsortium/

In September 2002, Sharp announced the creation of a Consortium consisting of major players in the 3D business. The consortium comprises over 100 members and the Steering members are:

* Itochu Corporation
* NTT Data Corporation
* Sanyo Electric Co., Ltd.
* Sharp Corporation
* Sony Corporation

Other members are many big companies like AMD, Samsung, Microsoft, and IBM Japan. Also member is Nvidia, but I cannot see ATI or Intel on list.

My Amazing Brain

Presenting these two images on the screen, required high-end graphics systems, in order to present each image separately. This is typically done by sending each image to the CRT sequentially, and then having the user wear glasses, such that the 'wrong' eye is blocked from seeing an image. In this way, the left eye sees a left eye image and the right eye sees a right eye image. The brain does the rest!

My brain is amazing to have Instant Z data from 2 of 2D image.

Your brain is amazing too!

Sharp 3D LCD is very very cool because it does not need glasses wearing for 3D effect.

By now tho, everyone is used to the DVD cases, which are also used for video games.

There are plenty of shelving and furniture designed to support this size.

Yes it's ecologically wasteful. Anyone remember that CDs used to come in longboxes with the jewel case inside?

The thing that was lost from these larger format pacakging, especially the LP, is the album art.

The DVD cases let them diplay all the info on the back. Like with games, now there are a dozen symbols indicating multiplayer, how much memory blocks are used, etc.

Yeah the blue fringe on the Blu-Ray cases may not be everyone's cup of tea but it does make them easier to spot from regular DVDs. To be accurate, the color should be violet.:p

I told many people here that Toshiba will be using the CELL processor in their 2006 TVs. But noooo certain people had to argue with me and others that stated the truth.

Good to see people like me vindicated now. I wonder if Sony will announce if they will be using CELL in their TVs or Blu-ray players?

Titanio, I will beleive the player on the PS3 will be a s good as a way more expensive standalone, be it a recorder or not when I see it. I remember the same being said about the PS2 DVD quality, which turned out to be poor, well compared to £150 player it was. As for the quality of the HD trailers off Live I'm hoping what your thinking, that they are off lower quality. As for 1080p the Pani pv 500 doesn't support it nor do the vast majority of HD TV at the moment.

OK I have a bridge to see you too along with some ocean front property in Arizona. In the last 20 years this has NEVER been the case and it never will, thats like saying your PC is as good for watching DVD as my 2000$ denon DVD player, you really belive this you seem a little to smart to do so IMO.

Mercury and Nvidia

Mercury and Nvidia are partners for sharp 3D LCD technology. Sony is on steering committee. Maybe something come from this no? Only possible is guess. I do not know if 3D LCD will be at CES.

C0_re, what the hell is going on with you? What I get from you is that you're willing to spend thousands of dollars on A/V gear, and justify those purchases to others by getting ultra-elitist about it. ;)

$2000 DVD player? Good god. Do you roll twin LCD screens in your Ferrari as well?

@ihamoitc: Ok dude, 3D video, we get it. :)

And another thing that’s overrated is HDMI. The bloody cable does not lock into the socket either on the TV or DVD player and constantly breaks connection. It’s quite an oversight that.

This is the second time today I've read about this issue. First time was on the AVS Forum, followed a link to an article talking about and rating different HDMI cables. The article said there is no difference in pic quality and in fact Monster Cables, because they are heavier than most, had more instances of the cable having a poor connection.

I feel your opinion is correct and sensible but I think some have different opinion for this. I think they prefer not powerful and fully programmable chip like CELL but normal and not so great "specialized" chip.

To be fair, you didn't tell people that Toshiba would be using Cell. You told people that Toshiba said they would be using Cell.

I'm still somewhat surprised by the announcement and would like to see some details about what it means to use a Cell chip inside a TV.

Understandable. But see that wasn't the discussion. It wasn't an opinion that CELL would be in more products than just the PS3 and Mercury system image scanners and etc. Corporate execs have been saying it for months. Some people here just did like the news I guess.:???:

Well to be fair to myself, I'm not an insider. I can only go by the reports that I see on a daily basis. And the reports over the months suggested that CELL would be used in more things than just the PS3. Again some people probably didn't like that news and wanted the CELL to be another EE.

But since we know the truth now, I'm like the rest of you and would love to know what the CELL can bring to the scene. And a question I have is will PS3 + Toshiba TV\w CELL = A totally better product combonation than having one or the other?

I doubt it, other than possibly assisting in 1080p decoding (of the games). Even then I don't think/know if it would help much.

I'm still trying to figure out how this isn't false advertising! 4:2:0 != 4:4:4.

Maybe can boost PS3 OS for multitask aspect so maybe game can be played on PS3 while TV CELL downloading to PS3 hard-drive from PS3 internet connection. If 2 TVs, maybe one TV can have game and other can download movie to PS3 hard-drive and view this movie. Maybe PS3 has "open" organization for this possibility. Many possibilities but I do not think developer will waste time making special game effect for extra TV SPE for extra video or audio but it is possible. Also PS3 can be like LAN hub for many TVs so many possibilities. I think advantage is more for lifestyle than for actual game.

LOL, man forget that!

(I also like how in the Samsung article the author tries to get the obligatory PS3 take in there. It can launch early spring and PS3 still launch late spring. Hello!)

I guess on the one hand these guys (Pioneer/Samsung) are hoping PS3 won't be out for a while, to give them time on the market to themselves, whereas on the other hand, studios I'm sure want PS3 out ASAP.

I think Sony is due to announce a player, it seems it'll be in the same ballpark as the above two.
