CES 2006 News & Announcements

LOL, man forget that!

(I also like how in the Samsung article the author tries to get the obligatory PS3 take in there. It can launch early spring and PS3 still launch late spring. Hello!)

I was thinking exactly that...brilliant minds think alike :D

You notice the Samsung is 1080i but the Pioneer is 1080p?

PS3 better output movies in 1080p, especially when HD-DVD players are being priced at $500.

That HD-DVD player only outputs at 720p/1080i too ;)

HD-DVD has a lot more to worry about than resolution outputs, I would say.

Given that Sony has touted 1080p from the get-go, I would think it's a given. It would be an embarassing climb-down if PS3 did not offer 1080p output for movies. Which makes some of these player prices all the crazier, and even makes that HD-DVD one look like very bad value even just as a movie player (assuming a sub $500 PS3 price!). Methinks they don't expect PS3 to be on the market for at least a few months, hence they'll scalp the really hardcore early adopters for all they can.

True, software availability is a big issue.

But Blu-Ray can't assume just because it has more titles and the PS3 that it could try to charge double (for both hardware and software) what HD-DVD is charging.

That's the way to blow the advantages they have.

In this country at least, HDTVs are definitely being marketed with resolution being very prominent for price differentials.

I think resolution will be a major point for these players too.

I think it's a fairly certain bet that the 1080p PS3 will be sub-$500...like I say, PS3 alone, just as a movie player, will make that HD-DVD player look pricey ;)

Waste of money

Wow, that's expensive. Maybe HD-DVD does have a leg to stand on...

If PS3 is <$500 then HD-DVD is dead and silly people trying to sell Blu-Ray for $1000+ will be very unhappy because only small percentage of silly buyers will buy it. Only chance for HD-DVD is Xbox360 v2.0.

If Pioneer and Samsung have the balls to charge $1-2k for a BD Player, there has to be some benefit over a < $500 PS3. Perhaps the PS3 is a crippled player? Perhaps Sony won't be pushing PS3 at people that aren't looking for a game console. I'd think the HD-DVD camp would be a lot larger if all of the Bluray supporters knew that they would have to compete with Sony undercutting them by such a huge amount.

Unless you have to wait another year for the PS3, and the only competition HD-DVD faces in the meantime is $1000 Blueray players...

I think that's all they expect. I'm sure they don't expect to charge as high as some of them are, at least, once they're not the only ones on the market (or at least not too far beyond that point - there'll always be some who simply won't put a PS3, for example, at the centre of their home theatre ;)). But while they can, they will.

You'll see PS3 in shorter time than that! And the Tosh player isn't out till March. In reality, the gap between that release and PS3's will at most be a few months.

For $1000 or more, those things should record, maybe even have a PVR with a disk big enough for HDTV recordings, maybe even an ATSC/QAM/Direct TV tuner.

$1000 and more for playback only?

What are they on?:devilish:

They want to piss away the advantages of Blu-Ray? Or did all the Blu-Ray hardware companies pay subsidies to the studios to get them to sing on to Blu-Ray?

Redmond.....

Subsidising by Microsoft is a strong possibility here. I mean the hardware components required for HD-DVD are virtually the same for Blu-Ray.

It would make sense for Microsoft to subsidise Toshiba's players rather than risk selling an add-on with the 360 which would bomb hard.

Guys please it is called BLU-ray. What did you expect?

I expected it to not be that ugly. It's not the color that I mind, it's the cheap looking plastic. Especially for a premium medium that will surely sport a premium price tag. It would have looked much much better if they used a clear blue plastic instead.

I agree the box is not a good design. It looks like they did not spend time designing the box or maybe some silly marketing people designed in committee fashion.

That's what I wonder.

The BOM costs should be comparable. Blue-laser diode is not cheap.

Either HD-DVD is selling at cost or loss. Or there's a subsidy.

Maybe it's a subsidy for low volumes and limited time. Then when they cost reduce, the subsidy goes away.

I smell a rumour brewing here... ;)

So not only are the rumors true that MS will subsidize PC manufacturers for including HD-DVD drives, but now you have them subsidizing CE manufacturers? And this loss will be made up where exactly?

Maybe you were joking, but if not than this eye-rolly-thing is for you:
