Buying new TV - Go LED or wait for 3d?

What's that word you were using? Naff? ;) Would love to know the tech involved, but I'm sure the form factor is going to be far more of a negative than any benefits of the 3D tech.

More pants than naff? Or would you go with smell? I'd say it's a load of naff pants with serious smell. Unless it was buried flush in the wall, I can't see it proving at all popular. It's friggin' oversized box, in an age of Apple slimness and even bevel-free TVs.

I am curious, is it physically possible for front projection (cinema) for glasses free 3D ?

Physically yes, practically no.

You'd have to use a reflective screen like in the recent Apple patent (which is really just a trivial variant of schemes described in earlier patents by Ray Alden). But the resolution and precision of projection necessary is unrealistic.

Who says you've got to wait, I was going to wait as well but then I thought I cannot miss the 3D games of next year, and currently GT5, so I pulled the trigger on the Toshiba 55WX800U from amazon. It came to $1280 with 2 pairs of glasses thrown in. (and a hard to find 20% one-time coupon) It's also a nice 55" 240hz LED upgrade from my current 46" LCD from 3 years ago, which I plan to sell to get some money back.

Suck it, you Europeans :)

How is it? Where did you get it at that price?

Edit: Doh!! Amazon, yes reading is a skill.

How do you find it in terms of 3D, specifically crosstalk. I had originally ruled LCD out for bad crosstalk issues and will be buying a 3D plasma in the next day or two, would it be worth my while looking at LCD again or does it still have major issues with 3D?

The TV is not here yet, it's coming next week. I have also only tried a 3DTV with glasses once, it was a Bravia and I was playing motorstorm, and I didn't notice any issues. I don't know what the telltale signs of crosstalk are, but my biggest complaint was that the glasses weren't big enough. I want big, goofy looking glasses to cover my entire field of view, just like ones at IMAX.

Well i finally ventured into a Sony shop and tried out one of their 3DTVs and well... I know i said i'd never buy a 3DTV but... you know... No, i can't. It looks way better than anything i've seen at the cinema in terms of 3D effect. But i can't. Seriously. Idea, get out of my head. Now.

"Censored rage!"

Sooo Did you bought it already :)
I'm looking for a new TV in 2011, but I have some demands... Should be atleast 65" 60" is the absolute minimum. I currently have 52" and I sold my projector, so I need a bigger screen. 52" from three meters is not ok for my uses. I wan't 3D and maximum cost 2-2.5ke.

A friend of mine who works at an electronic retailer said, that should be possible. Apparantly bigger screens and 3D should become way more mainstream next year, but we'll see, for once I'm not really in a hurry and I'm willing to wait to get my demands met.

So i bit the bullet and just ordered a Samsung PS50C680 for £795. Should arrive some time next week ill be sure to update you all on my impressions.

Dr Evil, there is already the 60" LG PX9900 available for around £1700 so im sure you will have no problem finding a large 3D screen for under £2000 next year.

Yeah that's not too bad, although LG's have as far as I have understood somewhat bad image retention issues even among plasmas. I will probably use the new TV as a PC-monitor also, so I have to carefully evaluate whether plasmas are even a possibility for me.

I'm also planning on getting rid of my front projector and replacing it with a 3D TV at least 50" size. While I love the big screen, the grayish black levels and the need to darken the room for any serious viewing is starting to grate. It'll take a while to get used to a smaller screen, but I hope the improvements in picture quality and 3D will more than make up for it.

Had my eye on the Panasonic 50" 3D plasma but decided to wait a few months or even a year.
One thing that's putting me off in the Panasonic plasma is the design. The LCD's are so good looking now that it looks seriously out of date. Hopefully after some months Panasonic has updated the looks, or LCD's have improved so there'd be less crosstalk.

Panasonic plasma's will always have the 'panasonic look'. i.e. total disregard for how it looks when it's off in favour of the way it looks when it's on.

Wish Pioneer were still in plasma business. I know their tech was bought by Panasonic, but Pioneer plasmas also had the looks.
What is it with Panasonic, almost all their products that area appealing otherwise are ugly. I was shopping for a 3D ready Blu-ray player with 2 HDMI outs. The Panasonic 300-something would have been high on my list if it weren't for the ugliness. Bought a Sony 407 (without 2 HDMI, but it was cheap enough and I live in the hope that there'd be 3D compatible HDMI switchers with separable audio available before I buy a 3D TV) instead, but it's not as future proof as I had wished for not being compatible with my 1.3 version receiver.
