MS PR! http://news.xbox.com/2014/04/xbox-one-march-npd Well, Kudos for MS for announcing sales even when they didn't win. If only Ninty and Sony would follow suit...

Highlights from March 2014 NPD Group results include:

Xbox One continues selling at a strong pace with 311,000 units sold in the U.S. in the month of March, surpassing Xbox 360 sales by more than 60 percent at the same point in time.
Xbox 360 continues to grow its install base with 111,000 units sold in March in the U.S., more than any other seventh generation console.
Xbox One continues to see impressive software sales with an average of 2.9 games sold per console.
With Xbox One and Xbox 360 combined, the Xbox platform sold the most games across all console platforms with 4.1 million games sold. Xbox One sold 1.4 million games in March and Xbox 360 sold 2.7 million, totaling 49 percent of the total software market share (Xbox 360 and Xbox One combined).
During the month of March, Xbox One and Xbox 360 games in the top 10 title lists were as follows:
Xbox One held four top titles in the generation eight top 10 console game title list in the U.S. including: “Plans vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare,” “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” “Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes,” “ Titanfall.”
Xbox 360 held six top titles in the generation seven top 10 console game title list in the U.S. include: “Minecraft,” “Dark Souls II,” “The Lego Movie Video Game,” “Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare,” “Call of Duty: Ghosts,” “South Park: The Stick of Truth.”

Also

We’re also happy to share today that more than 5 million Xbox One consoles have been sold-in to retailers since our launch. The new generation is off to a strong start, with global Xbox One sales outpacing Xbox 360 by more than 60 percent at the same point in time

We should keep in my mind PS4 basically started coming out of supply shortage in March though. It should have been expected to see a large boost, as pent up demand was satisfied. That's why I was putting odds at 50-50 who won NPD.

I think April is phase 2 of PS4 coming in stock, and it could be more months before we establish a non-constrained PS4 baseline.

Well at least for Amazon, the demand has not waned much, PS4 is always in the top 5, only jostling around with three PSN cards and an occasional 75% off PC title. The TF XB1 title still at $450 is at lingering at #24.

I think basically we've established $449+ free game isn't going to be enough for Xbox One. They'll need more.

At least to beat the competition in NPD, which lets face it, seems to be the real goals of all sides.

With two caveats: $449 drop may not have had as big an effect as a official price drop, as Gamestop for one example didn't participate, two, perhaps PS4 sales were higher than normal coming out of supply constraint.

But OTOH, I think any sales effect is frontloaded, so I could only expect sales of $449 XB1 have declined considerably since the promotion began.

Are we talking internet sides, or Sony/MS sides?

If the latter, wat.

I dunno, I guess you could argue corporations are above all this, but are they really?

Who "wins" seems to color the discussion to a huge degree, even if the "loser" sells 80, 90%, or more, as much. Take this month...

MS certainly has LOVED to brag about their NPD wins in the past. They are human like anybody else.

That's one reason I think Xbox is big in MS (I've heard it called the most exciting division etc). At the end of the day they are "dudes", and Xbox is a lot more fun, and invites a lot more fanboy participation, than "Office" software. As Bill Gates said, it's uniquely consumer focused, and you dont get hundreds lining up for Bill Gates to sign their first Xbox sold for any other MS product.

So, since early january to now, 1.1 million additional Xbone consoles shipped.

What are they doing with their factories and console orders? They must have stocked a LOT of consoles by now.

I think Feb is a bigger month due to tax returns. Though those guys paid $50 more and had to buy TF separate, sucks to be an early adopter.

BTW NPD does NOT count bundled software, unlike Chart Track. So Titanfall's win is a bit more impressive imo. It won obviously only on the strength of stand-alone sales.

But it does include PC sales. We'd need numbers from either EA or Respawn to figure out the xb1 sales. But it didn't drive hardware sales at all. All the millions spent on advertising, exclusivity, giving it away free, and price cuts didn't move the needle. MS must be thinking of something drastic for E3.

whilst it looks like the ps4 is 3:1 advantage over the xbone which is decent. Its still looks like theyre only producing 1 million consoles a month = 12 million a year.
Why? Is there something in it thats hard to get, DDR5 perhaps?
Like I said before the wii/ps3/360 all were selling > 12 million a year so they must of known 1 million a month is bugger all, esp since the wii U was selling near nothing.

perhaps Sony's larger financial situation is to blame? Anyone know what the memory cost are for PS4? What sort of long term commitment would Sony have to make to get guarantees for the components for PS4 beyond 1M units/month? and with that in mind is it worth to take that gamble knowing that at anytime demand could snap back to lower levels and they are stuck with all this supply.

:) what is nov/dec for? millions are shifted just in the US, let alone the world

consoles have been selling about 40+ million a year for years
the wii U is what? 2-4 million 40-3 = 37million to go around.
In what alternative universe did sony think they were gonna sell 10 million or less in a year?
Like I said somethings weird about sony only making a million consoles a month

I'm thinking more like 2-1 currently. XO sold 311k in March NPD and the rate is estimated at 2/3 that for rest of the world. So maybe ~500k WW. Whereas Sony basically just announced 1m in March.

It may trend closer to 3-1 though the next couple months though, MS gave a heavy TF/$50 off push that should dissipate. Then we will see what happens at E3.

The ship numbers will probably be 3 or 4-1 for Jan-March though. Since XO will ship at most 1.1, and PS4 should ship at least 3m going by the 7m announce and 4.2m at Dec 31. So I'm sure we'll get plenty of breathless media articles about how PS4 is crushing Xbox 3-1 then.

As for 1m/month...well they're fairly in stock now and Japan demand is dying off quickly. I'm not sure they need more currently. But they will need either to ramp up or stockpile for the holidays though, not sure how that works.

Very little additional numbers yet :(

But aha, creamsugar has appeared, and so far he said

XBO megaton / PS4 megaton > 2/1 (Include bundle)

So TF vs ISS. But he included bundle...

On 311k Xboxen sold though, 200-250k for bundle at most?

More creamsugar

2:< 350k, PS3 ~ 51%
5 demo: <280k, PS4 ~ 54%, XBO ~ 20%, PS3 ~ 19%

2 Dark Souls 2 apparently, 5=GZ obviously. Poor GZ sales, ouch at software sales really.

Haha and wow, just discovered this, which I shall use often hopefully

Comedy Central < 440k, 360 ~ 55%

So that's Southpark.

By extension that puts TF at close to a million, since ISS would have to be >440k, and TF>ISS by 2:1 (including bundles)

Yes, and PS4 megaton < 0.5m

So that's ISS.

And the "Yes" was in reply to if TF was over 1 million. So >1m for TF, dunno if that's including bundles but I assume no.

Good summation to date
Titanfall > 1M
Infamous: Second Son < 500K
South Park: Stick of Truth < 440K
(360 <242K)
Call of Duty: Ghosts
Dark Souls II < 350K
(PS3 <178K, 360 <172K)
Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes < 280K
(PS4 <151K, XBO <56K, PS3 <53K)

Another creamsugar

Wii + Wii U < 100k -__-

Oh, and vita is officially dead. Very close to 4 digits.

Wowwwwww

Wii u is up yoy.

Last year=68k.

So 1m TF out of how many XB1 owners in NA? 3m? 33% attach rate? That sounds too high.

Edit: Halo had a 50% attach rate when it hit 1m sold.

This guy is probably right, he leaks famitsu numbers early, hardware data dump!

David Gibson ‏@gibbogame 1m

@Emi1yRogers Wii was 28k, WiiU just over 70k,PSP around 5k, PSV little over 10k, 3DS 159k. No Nintendo press release that I can find.

https://twitter.com/gibbogame/status/457009449161347072

So:

PS4 371k
XB1 311k
3DS 159k
360 111k
Wii U 70k
PS3 67k-revealed by Aquamarine.
Wii 28k
PSV 10k

Wow, the most complete hardware picture in a while.

Here's a NPD LTD. Didn't realize XO already surpassed Wii U

LTD as of March 2014:

1) PS4 - 2.91 million (+0.38 million from XBO, +0.61 million from Wii U)
2) XBO - 2.53 million (+0.23 million from Wii U)
3) Wii U - 2.30 million
