MCV has been told by a trusted retail source that sales of PS4 consoles jumped 106 per cent last week as exclusive title InFamous: Second Son debuted on Sony’s machine, jumping straight to No.1 in the process.

That’s a bigger jump than Xbox One enjoyed following the release of Titanfall – that saw sales of Microsoft’s machine jump 96 per cent.

What are the games that will sustain this demand?

After getting a couple of games at launch, I haven't touched it in awhile.

I think Sony greatest key to its success, especially when it comes to sales momentum... Is it's "internal developers". The knowledge of knowing that some great PS4 titles are waiting in the wings...

But to answer your question from the perspective of "now"... maybe not much, but Infamous: Second Son, Metal Gear, Watch Dogs, and whatever else in-between should keep PS4 sales (high demand) going until mid June, IMO.

The PS4 sells itself, software just increases demand.

MLB The Show is fairly big in the US, plus they have exclusive marketing rights for Watch_Dogs (it will be marketed like an exclusive). The Witness and DriveClub will probably come out before the end of summer, and Destiny is right after summer (which they also have exclusive marketing rights for). Then Sony has The Order 1886, Deep Down and could very well get exclusive marketing rights for Batman and Assassins Creed Unity. Not to mention a bunch of indie titles. Looks like the PS4 is pretty much set for the year... they have a pretty consistent stream of games.

Also, pretty impressive that Infamous managed to outsell MGS on all platforms combined. Plus 106% increase in hardware sales, after an already 72% increase in hardware sales. That's what a highprofile release + simply getting more stock will do for the PS4.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes [UK 1st week sales]

PS4 (58%)
XBO (20%)
PS3 (15%)
360 (7%)
How does the MGS game sales compare to other titles? Is a 3:1 truly indicative of a 3:1 install base, or does the MGS series not sell as well on XB? If MGS games only sell half as well to XB owners, the install base would be more like 3:2

For new buyers, the current library. They will be buying PS4 to play those games that you've played. Losing interest months later with nothing new to play won't adversely affect sales unless there's either a flood of second hand consoles of owners giving up on the box, or a significant word-of-mouth movement telling people not to bother as there's nothing to play yet.

The Watch Dogs delay probably helped Sony out more than otherwise. Launch supply was (and still is!) constrained anyways but now they have an exclusively marketed AAA title to kick off the summer.

Edit: I don't think DriveClub will make it until the fall. They really messed up something there.

MGS is a flippin' expensive demo. Eurogamer even posted the full main gameplay in a one hour walkthrough. I don't see reason to expect sales to be that great.

The PS4 XB1 divide could just be a sign that the series is coming home to roost. Also there's a huge amount of game in this so called 'demo'. Another thing could also be that the majority of people who complained about MGS being an 'over priced demo' were in fact the people who had gone out and bought an 'overpriced console'...

It takes longer to "complete" than Infamous.

Most people consider "complete" when you hit the end credits. Not going through the game with a fine tooth comb. If the latter was considered completing a game, 99% of gamers haven't completed 99% of the console games they played.

I am sure there are those that will go for every PSN trophy available for Infamous and take alot longer than a typical playthrough.

Titanfall outsold Infamous ~2-1 debut week

MCV has also been told by a trusted retail source that Titanfall sold just under double the amount of units its first week than InFamous managed in its debut week, although of course Titanfall sales fell around 75 per cent in its second week leaving it behind both Sony's game and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes.

MCV can also reveal that around one in four UK Xbox One owners purchased Titanfall. Meanwhile, around one in nine PS4 owners acquired InFamous: Second Son.

So obviously TF attach rate =25%, Infamous attach rate=~11%

Also, am I crazy but cant we work the math on the last sentence, combined with TF/Infamous sales ratio of around 2:1, to mean such that XBO is not that far behind PS4 in LTD UK hardware install base??

.11PS4 X 2~.25XO?

PS4~1.14XO?

Granted with the percentages there is a range of error there.

I haven't seen any GAF sales mavens jump on this so I wonder if I missed something but, I dont think so.

These dont really jove with some past datas, such as this I googled (but it's incredibly vaguely worded) http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-01-30-sony-uk-ps4-to-xbox-one-sales-ratio-is-1-5-1

And we had that PS4=530k, XO=364k at the end of 2013. Which is a ~1.46:1 ratio.

Could XO have caught up that much in the intervening weeks? It seems unlikely but, possible.

There was also this (pre-Infamous week) just to add plausibility

Xbox One has been the UK's "best-selling games console for four weeks in a row", according to an MCV report.

That's a ridiculous assumption. The people complaining about the length are PS4 owners as much as XB1 owners, as clearly evidenced by the distribution of comments in the press. 2 hours to complete the main story is short no matter which platform one prefers.

It doesn't matter whether MGS is good value for money or not. Truth is people are less likely to shell out 30 bucks on a reportedly 5 hour experience than they are to shell out 60 bucks on ten times as much play. Even if those reports are bogus and there's as much play time to be had from MGS, people's buying choices will be affected by expectations. If word gets out that there's better value to MGS than the listed completion times and people are having fun with it, sales may grow. But otherwise sales of a complete AAA game with TV advertising should be expected to outsell a demo/prologue by and large. It's certainly no remarkable victory for Infamous SS to outsell MGS:GZ

TF:Infamous = 2:1
1:4 owners of TF = 8 portions
1:9 owners of Infamous = 9 portions

That'd place XB1:pS4 at 8:9, but only if first day sales are equal. Given the reportedly high amount of TF preorders, I'm not sure we can read anything into these ratios. May well be a lower proportion of PS4 owners bought Infamous in the first week but may get it in the second.

UK and Europe numbers are basically a pig!

Huh. I am assuming 1:4 and 1:9 ratios are referring to debut week unit sales to total console userbase. Doesn't really matters who preordered more or who is waiting until the next week.

If TF equal 2X Infamous sales and Infamous is equal to 1:9 of the PS4 usersbase than TF equals 1:4.5 of the PS4 while 1:4 to the XB1 userbase which breaks out to 1 xbox1 user to every 1.125 PS4 users.

inFamous SS was rumoured to have (global) 1million+ pre-orders and ~190,000 DD pre-orders plus it is a pack in that, again was rumoured, to have ~430,000 pre-orders. Depending on the conversion rate, and veracity of the rumour, that would skew MVC figures by wide margin.
