I'd like to supplement this press release with some additional information that may be interesting to some here.

The PS4 has sold through 11.7 million units to end users this year (Jan 5th to Nov 22nd 2015) compared to 10.2 million units during the same period last year (Dec 29th-Nov 22nd 2014).

The PS4 sold through 4.1 million units during the holiday season last year (Nov 23rd 2014 to Jan 4th 2015) which led to total 2014 calendar year sales of 14.3 million. Assuming the PS4 can match or exceed the holiday sell through we saw last year then we could potentially see more than 14.8 million units sold through this calendar year.

For reference the PS2 sold through 8.5m units in November/December 2002 and the PS3 sold through 2.2m between November 23rd 2008 and December 29th 2008.

That's incredible. The idea that the sales are slowing down surely can't be true then. Sounds like they're picking up pace still.

Yup. Over the past 12 months (November 23rd 2014 through November 22nd 2015) the PlayStation 4 has sold through 15.8 million units to end users. That compares to the 14.4 million sold through between November 15th 2013 and November 22nd 2014.

You don't anticipate the PS4 to go on to sell more than the PS2? I imagine it's a tough call, they'd need some more hefty price drops and revised/slim(er) models. The Playstation VR is also another big unknown, as it could potentially do a Wii on the market (no pun intended).

Congrats to Sony on the sales. I wonder why they didn't just wait until PSX though and include all those juicy Black Friday sales.

30 million is a huge milestone and it's more impressive to announce 30 million now and then add in the huge sales from Black Friday and Christmas in an end of the year update. I doubt we'll hear anything about sales during PSX.

PS4 sales officially pass 30 million

and still microsoft is not even investing in marketing in europe in the most important months

They have some ads in every european country. In videogame shop the Xbox One marketing is as good as PS4 marketing. In Spain they are sponsor of soccer league with Real de Madrid and Barcelona and they lose by a big margin of 5 or 6 to 1 console. I don't remember the exact number. In France it is 4 to 1. In Germany last number we get were from June before the release of Batman it was 88% of PS4 and 12% of Xbox One.

With PS3, Sony beat Microsoft with a console released one year later, overpriced at 600 euros and with inferior 3rd party title. The problem is not the Xbox brand for Microsoft in Europe. It is the the very strong Playstation brand...

This time Sony had done a good job and Microsoft a bad one (release price(500 euros), hardware power, inferior version of 3rd party title, Tiers 2 country...) Sales war was lost since E3 2013 for Microsoft in Europe out of UK...

In a Auchan supermarket in Luxembourg last Christmas, no Xbox One at all and a very big PS4 presence... I never see this in France but out of videogame or gadget shop the Xbox One is behind of PS4... I live in France, work in Luxembourg and often go to Switzerland and Germany. It is very visible that Playstation brand is much bigger than Xbox brand...

30 million is a key milestone. Announcements at 10 Million, 20 and 30, with additional updates at key events like financials. 30 million by now before holiday shopping is plenty impressive and informative enough!

Just picked up some new sales data you may all be interested in. BTW if anyone here is a GAF member do they mind making a thread there about this. (If there isn't one already)

Shanghai Oriental Pearl today announced that Sony’s PlayStation 4 and Microsoft’s Xbox One have reached a total of 500,000 owners. Oriental Pearl, the company that distributes both the PS4 and XB1 in China, said that they hope to reach over 1 million owners in 2016 through the continued release of software titles and enhanced digital services.

It is worth noting that the consoles sold by Oriental Pearl are official Chinese versions and these numbers do not include import consoles from Japan, Asia, Europe and the US. This is a very big reason as to why the number is also very low as a lot of Chinese gamers will import their console from overseas.

In my country any bundle commercial on tv is a ps4 exclusive or a multiplatform where only the ps4 logo is shown.
It's just too strange that in a so bad position microsoft doesn't overspend in brand recognition

Sony has done shady things like combine PSP and Vita shipments when Vita wasn't selling, and they combined PS3 and PS2 numbers just when it was convenient to obfuscate lackluster PS3 sales as well. Even now they give us a PS4 number only, not PS3.

Just to be clear - because of your use of the word "shady" implies some failure or deliberate evasion to comply with a regulatory obligation - which isn't the case for either company; financial reporting requirements are set out in the regulation of the territory in which the principle business is established.

Sony has, I believe since the inception of PlayStation, structured it's gaming business so that is needs to report the minimum reporting requirement (sales, finances etc) whereas Microsoft have for reasons they've never voiced, have not.

Anyways, if it's not illegal MS can release however much sales info they want. They also for years were the most forthcoming with NPD numbers, tweeting X360 sales month after month (usually GAF worked out the other numbers based on what Microsoft gave out publically), yet I dont see you giving them credit for that.

Well I don't give Microsoft or Sony credit for doing the minimum you would expect because doing the minimum is the low bar.

Even today I think they are pretty key, it's clear NPD has banned anybody from giving out numbers, but MS still gives a percentage increase in sales that GAF calculates the number from. Nintendo sort of does this as well IIRC.

The fact that NPD turned a blind eye for so long is weird. They are a consumer and industry sales research and analysis organisation who sell information to their customers. This is why they have never been entirely happy with their information being made public.

I dont know exactly how much Sony breaks out gaming anymore

The same as always, as a completely separate business unit with independent financials.

Perhaps, MS calculates their percentage increase based on their own numbers that they track themselves. If MS comes up with the figures indepenedently from NPD and only uses NPD to corroborate their onw internally tracked figures, then NPD can't say a dickybird.

NPD allow Microsoft to post that percentage data.

Same with Sony and Nintendo. Nintendo actually choose to post more detailed data in some of their releases.

Wasn't there an XB1 number not so long ago? I'm thinking around 100k, but that may have been launch number. Can we ball-park imagine a PS4:XB1 ratio?
