*AHEM* Yeah, it's clear to me that the forum as a whole is incapable of discussing this in a mature fashion.

After heavy pruning, this thread is reopened. Its remit is to collate and observe current sales, including anecdotes of what people are (not) able to find in stores, as a barometer of general availability. Discussion of what these sales mean for the future of either platform was moved here, a thread which is likely to stay closed as it's full of madness. It's too early to tell anything about the platform futures at this point, IMO, but a place to record current sales is valid, hence this thread is reopened.

The oracle Pachter estimates that Sony are producing 1.4 million consoles a month.

Sony’s 4.2 million through December 31st, they didn’t start manufacturing til September 1st. You know that. I mean we would have seen picture of the assembly. They manufactured 1.4 million a month? And you cannot commit manufacturing capacity for less than a year, so their manufacturing plan is 16 or 17 million PS4. That’s Shocking.

Microsoft is making a million a month, by the same logic, and their manufacturing plan is twelve (million). So the Microsoft guys actually didn’t believe Sony’s numbers. They didn’t know they were making that many and that’s part of your lack of supply constraint.

I’m amazed by how ambitious Sony is being with this launch, and impressed that they’re executing it. So Sony fully intends to kick Microsoft’s b*tt next year. But the good news is, add those two numbers together… 28 million consoles next year? Is that even possible? That’s Shocking! I mean these guys sold 22 million in a peak year in the past, so these guys are thinking big, big, big, that will attract more software, really good for consumers.

I think this is the best time to be a gamer ever, except for maybe this week, ’cause there’s not very many games, but in another two months we’re gonna get some pretty good games.

I find the comment that they have to commit to 12 months of manufacturing very interesting. Even if he's off and it's only 1M consoles/months. That's still a lot of consoles to produce and sell in the first year.

Somebody has to pay for the initial set-up fees, so if Sony/Microsoft is willing to eat those up they could commit to shorter stints of manufacturing I would presume, but at the cost of much higher unit prices for the particular line. 12 months seem to be the ordinary though.

Well they could still manufacture 12-16M this year and sell any unsold stock the year after that. It's not milk.

They don't actually have to project they are going to sell that many in order to have a need to produce that many. They also have to fill the entire worldwide supply channel from front to back, so that adds a certain amount above what they expect to sell to what they would need to produce. I have absolutely no idea how much extra this would be, though.

Let's also not forget the fact that they (and MS and everyone else) can finally sell the consoles legally in China. They couldn't before. No more black market. This might skew the figures quite a lot compared to previous generations...

That's only if they are made in the free market zone in China. I don't think they are allowed to import them.

Anecdotal evidence ahoy. Zavvi already offering Xbox one with a discount in the UK. £409.
I've tackled that one twice laready. ;) A 0.5% discount off an abnormally high UK RPP, because the UK RRPs are set with room for price-reductions and bargain-hunting consumers (consumers who only want to buy discounts, so the starting price is set higher so the product can be discounted to the intended sale price), doesn't represent a true discounting in the sense of trying to shift unwanted hardware. The only point of interest is that the competitive pricing is limited to XB1 and not PS4. It's probably best to ignore such small price fluctuations and just look at actual sales and availability, or risk another thread collapse.

4.7%, 2 months after launch?

If nothing else it tells that Zavvi are not selling their stock.

Or it could simply mean they want an advantage over their competitors....

It's a basic sales and marketing technique that's been used for centuries...

Let's not delve into pointless speculation...again...

It's not an advantage unless your competition are also discounting their product. If a particular product is in great demand you don't offer a discount as cutting your bottom line is a pointless loss of revenue.

I suspect they have too much stock, they placed their bets at the start of the generation and now need to make room for other things.

It, as a singular occurrence, makes no statement about the health of the XBone. It just probably exposes bad stock control on their behalf.

It's on GAF but, several European Amazon's seem to have PS4 stock, at least bundles. Here is one of the links http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-PlaySt...UTF8&qid=1390309466&sr=1-1&keywords=ps4+knack

Amazon UK I personally did the stock checker trick, and can confirm the KZ and Knack bundles aren't selling particularly fast (in fact I think the Knavk bundle has not sold a single unit in the past hour or more as of this writing??). For anybody who wants to confirm, the process is add one to cart, then go to edit cart, for Amjazon UK there's an extra step where you choose 10+ on the slider, then you edit the quantity to 999, update, and it will downforce your cart to however many are left (if it is less than 999), you can do this as many times as you like to get a realtime look at how fast they are selling,

Perhaps the first signs of thaw in PS4 demand?

Anyways it's odd to me that people seem to snap up standalone PS4's at retail price, but aren't seemingly willing to pay just 40-60 more for them in ebay or bundled form. I say that because of reports of lines for the recent Sunday stock Best Buy got in, when PS4's for $40-$60 premium seem freely available on ebay. It's just kind of odd, people not necessarily the smartest, reminds of the people who will drive across town to save a couple cents per gallon on gas, not seeing the forest for the trees, or I'm sure I missed a more appropriate metaphor.

It was 1AM in the UK as of the time of your post... I doubt many people were looking then. I bet those will be gone in a day.

Here in Canada, bestbuy/futureshop and the source finally got some PS4s and they sold out within minutes at FS/BB and within a few hours at the source (which is a relatively small store).

Sales definitely slowed down a bit from the holidays (which is expected) but they still sell out pretty quickly.
