The PS4 sold ~540K last year IIRC. Plus the Destiny bundle was available for pre-order a few months longer than the new Taken King bundle. And it was the first white PS4 available in the US. Not to mention Destiny had a lot more hype around it last year. Combine that with what DrJay24 said and yeah, it's no surprise the PS4 is down YOY.

Zhuge is now posting regular sales/analysis articles on https://zhugeex.com/

Interesting that this generation is going to be the worst console generation (in terms of hardware sales) since the Sega Saturn, PS1, and N64 generation. Gen 6 had the PS2 to promote massive hardware sales. Gen 7 had the Wii to massively boost hardware sales. Looks like Gen 8 thus far isn't going to have anything with a similar effect on the industry.

edit - NPD report is out http://venturebeat.com/2015/10/19/september-2015-npd-ps4-wins/
PS4 won, NBA 2K16 and NFL 16 are in front of MGSV [no bundles or digital counted].

And NPD has finally stopped including PC sales in its general release to the public. About time considering probably greater than 90% of PC sales are now digital.

Interesting that XBO lead PS4 in 4 titles while PS4 lead XBO in 5 titles. Granted, for Destiny's expansion, PS4 sales were reduced due to the bundle available for it. Although the same could potentially be said for Madden NFL sales being reduced due to the XBO bundle for it.

Not surprisingly, XBO tends to take the lead in family friendly titles (Minecraft, Disney). Let's hope that Microsoft doesn't decide to focus entirely on family oriented titles. :p

SB

Isn't PS4 tracking PS2 sales quite closely?

Isn't PS4 tracking PS2 sales quite closely?

I don't believe it was. Consider that the other consoles for Gen 6 were the Sega Dreamcast (failed), Xbox , and Gamecube. Granted the Wii U may perform worse than either the Xbox or the Gamecube, but the XBO is performing far better than either of them and will likely end up doing more sales for this generation than the Dreamcast, Xbox, and Gamecube combined (~54.6 million). I'd be extremely surprised if it didn't end up doing ~50% more sales than those 3 combined. As well, Wii U still has a chance to potentially equal or exceed Gamecube sales. It's currently at approximately half of total lifetime sales of Gamecube.

Gen 6 was really the PS2 and almost nothing else. Gen 7 was at least relatively close except for the Wii having that incredible start which boosted hardware numbers for the generation massively when you consider that none of the competition did badly.

If PS4 was doing the same as PS2, then combined with XBO performing better than X360, this generation would be blowing the PS2 generation away.

[edit] And his numbers don't seem to include the Dreamcast numbers (~8.2 million). So XBO could potentially double the cumulative sales of Xbox + Gamecube depending on the length of this console generation.

It's been covered widely that PS4 reached 20m and 25m global sales faster than PS2. I don't understand SB's analysis at all. Is he saying that despite PS4's great start, Xbox One's sales will make the generation an overall failure in terms of sales? :???:

Maybe the sales rates are criss-crossing, does anybody have an updated graph showing sales rates relative to launch?

You are comparing the complete generation against the first two years? It took a while for the PS2 to take off, which killed the XB and GC sales. I think if you look at lunch aligned sales you will learn a lot.

From gaf http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1126836
Software:

1.) NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
2.) Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3) [Note: This is Madden's second month.]
3.) Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360)
4.) FIFA 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
5.) Destiny: The Taken King (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
6.) Super Mario Maker (Wii U)
7.) Disney Infinity 3.0 (360, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
8.) Mad Max (PS4, Xbox One)
9.) NHL 16 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
10.) Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)

If anyone was wondering why publishers fund annual sports game releases that's why. They development costs less because each iteration builds on the previous version and they sell.

What's also interesting from VB is this
“After 23 months on the market, combined PS4 and Xbox One sales are 40 percent higher than the combined 23 month totals for PS3 and 360”

Edit: From gaf again

Forza 6: 195k including bundles

MGS V: Ps4 69% X1 23%
Overall less than 800k, that would put Ps4 at < 552k and X1 at < 184k

2k16 > 1.1m
Ps4: 52% X1: 39% so Ps4 > 572k X1 > 429k

Those are the brand loyalists. They're the minority. The fact Wii U could only attract some Wii owners is why it isn't setting the market on fire. And the brand loyal is maybe 10% of Wii owners, though likely less than that if we consider those buying for the franchises and product specifics rather than blindly on the name Nintendo.

Wii and Wii U, PS2 and PS3, XB360 and XB1, all show how you can't rely on one good experience to sell the next experience in the console space. There are zip guarantees that if someone buys your console this gen, they'll buy your next one too.

I was having a think about the system loyalty and going through all of the machines that I've owned in the past and all it demonstrates is that I have no loyalty whatsoever!

ZX Spectrum
Amstrad CPC464
Commodore Amiga 500
Sega Mastersystem
Nintendo Gameboy
Sega Megadrive
Sega Gamegear
Super Nintendo
Commodore CD32
Sony Playstation
Edit: Sega Saturn
Nintendo Gameboy Advance
Nintendo 64
Sega Dreamcast
Nintendo DS
Sony Playstation Portable
Sony Playstation 2
Gaming PC
Microsoft Xbox
Microsoft Xbox 360
Sony Playstation Vita
Nintendo WiiU
Sony Playstation 4

PC: 5
Sega: 5
Nintendo: 6
Sony: 5
Microsoft: 2

Omissions: Nintendo, Nintendo Gamecube, Nintendo Wii, Nintendo Gameboy Colour, Playstation 3, Xbox One.

Except that I owned all of the Sega machines and omitted a lot of Nintendos.

I generally choose consoles based on their offerings. Announcements and release schedules definitely plays a part for me too. I don't think that you can define someone's loyalties based on two generations alone, otherwise last generation I would have been considered loyal to Xbox and looking through the history that definitely isn't the case.

On the flip side, I've bought a bunch of PlayStation consoles but I also have no loyalty to Sony. If they continue to make products that appeal I may buy more but that's all I can say. Ditto Nintendo although I didn't buy a Wii U because it didn't appeal.

What you bought does not indicate loyalty. More important than the what is the why, i.e blind loyalty or informed choices.

Has the Forza series become stale? Those numbers look terrible...

NBA live numbers are completely in the toilet...

Possible Black Friday deal from Dell.

XB1 - 280K
3DS - 123K
WIU - 85K
