Why is MGSV rated so low?

Because the actual release date was on week 36, meaning after the span of that week 35 chart. Somehow enough units got sold early for it to reach that spot, which honestly probably isn't too many copies for that spot. I can guarantee you it will be number 1 in the week 36 chart.

Thought so. Leaked sales were enough for #16.

Just remembered that Until Dawn was released in last week of August, and not in September.

Again, I dont really doubt Zhuge's conclusion, Sony is dominating. It's just he seems to have a habit of presenting numbers as factual when they seem more like good educated guesstimates by himself.

I have access to non public data. I don't always post this data for obvious reasons, but if I post something I'll usually either, link the source, say it's my own findings, or not link any source because there is no public source I can link to. In this case the findings are published by a third party market research company who is well respected in the industry.

I verify all data before posting on GAF with the admins - http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=176888229&postcount=233

The findings don't really tell us anything we don't know (as hardware sell in can tell us this) but what it does show is the state of the home console market and how big it is. As you can see, consumers spent more on home consoles in 2014 since 2008. The console market is also expected to remain fairly stable over the next few years above the $15b mark. So overall there is more spend on home consoles atm compared to last few years.

UK reports are starting to come out. Chart-track says the MGSV has taken easy #1 spot in the UK last week, but its opening was behind two other 2015 #1s [Arkham Knight and Witcher 3].

Retail platform breakdown for MGSV:
PS4 - 72%
Xbone - 22%
PS3 - 3%
X360 - 2%

Brutal domination of PS4, and final breath of last gen.

Expected, Metal Gear and Playstation are synonymous. I know people that didn't even know it was coming out on PC and were planning to get Ps4s for MGS V...

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...-the-phantom-pain-is-series-biggest-uk-launch

  1. Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain
  2. Mad Max
  3. Gears of War: Ultimate Edition
  4. Until Dawn
  5. Disney Infinity 3.0
  6. Grand Theft Auto 5
  7. Lego Jurassic World
  8. Minecraft: PlayStation Edition
  9. Minecraft: Xbox Edition
  10. Batman: Arkham Knight

Surprising how well Gears of War performs as an exclusive title on a platform that isnt the best seller. Also Until Dawn which is a somewhat niche title.

And GTA V still sells in the top 10!!

From Gaf http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1108097

‘Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’ lands Konami their first No1 of the year.

It also marks the series’ return to the top of the All Formats chart for the first time since 2008. It’s a new week 1 high for the series beating the opening week sales of ‘Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty’ by just under 37%. It’s enough to put it at 3rd place in terms of first week sales in 2015 (behind Batman: Arkham Knight & The Witcher III: Wild Hunt). PS4 takes a commanding 72% share over Xbox One which has 22%, while PS3 edges to a 3% share over Xbox 360 with just 2%.

Unable to threaten the No1 spot ahead of Metal Gear, Warner Bros’ post-apocalyptic open world ‘Mad Max’ still makes a solid start driving in at No2 in its debut week.

Where's your evidence of that? :D

MGS V hefty PS4 weighting (while not good for Xbox) can probably be chalked up to it being a more traditional Playstation associated franchise. Such as Final Fantasy. While Elder Scrolls Online sold better in UK charts on XBO despite a hefty install base disadvantage so it's the reverse there.

Still, using GAF's estimates (which was 37k copies of MGSV XBO sold I think) we can deduce it should still easily be a worthwhile venture for Konami. USA population is about 5X UK so that would mean something like 200k copies probably sold in USA (if not more, perhaps USA more XBO friendly) and then the rest of the world/EU should have it like 250k first week with more to come, (and plus some digital). For what's an easy porting process (given that most of the work in games production is the art assets, and those can be applied across PC/PS4/XBO). However the MGSV is one of the most popular sellers recently, the questioning of XBO port worth would apply better to lesser titles.

Don't forget, Gears remaster is not a full priced game. In US it is $40, and just 27 pounds in the UK.

That's from the chart track link I posted above.

Besides that it's difficult to parse how many copies are sold in a "slow" UK week (although I guess, with MGS V and getting into September not sure if this is still slow times).

I oftentimes wonder just how few copies a game needs to make it into something like, tenth place on a weekly smaller EU market chart (meaning, Greece or something)...hundreds? Dozens?

Edit: Actually after I wrote this I recalled I think Gaffers did their estimates and while I dont even remember the number, I deduced that Gears should do OK/profitable.

And Witcher 3 sold better on PS4.

I really don't think you can read too much into this stuff. Witcher 3 was my first outing in the series and similarly MGS V was my first proper outing in the MGS universe.

@Rangers- every major AAA game (apart from elder scrolls I think) has sold more on PS4 than Xbox One.

Thats mostly down to the install base differences in the UK really.

Ranger's is just saying that a 3:1 ratio for MGS V isn't indicative of a 3:1 install base difference. Particular titles seems to have particular platform biases in sales. He uses Elder Scrolls as an example.

Elder Scrolls is not a great example. It is the first retail MMO on the XB1 and the second on the PS4. The MMO playing userbase is split on the PS4 with FFXIV, which is a popular game.
