There's only a couple ways to try to guesstimate revenue (either somehow divining them from past financial reports, or estimating worldwide sales, both far from 100% accurate) and they'd be just that, sloppy educated guesstimates at best.
You don't need to guesstimate revenue, it's in everybody's financial reports.

The information ZhugeEX provided is not in financial reports and he specifically said that he didn't get the information from them. The information they provide is not that detailed. He would either have to have a source for that additional non-public information, or he has created a model to estimate it. I don't know if he ever specified which was the case.

I don't follow. Some quick on-the-back-of-a-beermat math looks like the graphs reflect the revenues published in Sony's reports only on a calendar year rather than financial year basis. And given revenue is published and therefore accurate, why would you not use official figures? :???:

How do these revenue figures differ from those published? What am I missing?

This is what he said.

ZhugeEX on NeoGAF said:
These numbers are not derived from public financial reports as the financial reports do not break down hardware revenue as displayed in the second graph in the OP.

Ok. So how is knowing the revenue for hardware alone useful?

[shrugs] Not sure this particular data is telling us anything we couldn't have already inferred from other data, but I guess more data (assuming it's accurate) is always better.

Fair enough, so it just reinforces what we know from announced sales numbers, not that those were ever in doubt.

Where? Can you link me MS's Xbox revenue for last quarter? Or show me where to find it? Same for Playstation.
you are correct they don't say how much the console hardware revenue made, they do say the number of consoles shipped though

total consoles shipped 360 & xbox1 & wii & wii U = 1.87 million
total consoles shipped ps4 = 3.0 million (no idea how many ps3's shipped)

Now since the ps4 costs more cash than all the other consoles I would have no problem with the statement last quarter revenue ps4 console hardware > 360 & xbox1 & wii & wii U console hardware (prolly close to 2:1) and thats not even counting the ps3

Yeah, they do list total hardware every quarter ever I believe. It may change for individual consoles, but they'll report the total (EG, XBO+360, PSP+Vita/PS4, PS3). So you could kid of figure out revenue there, although you'd still have to guess at average selling price a bit.

Again, I dont really doubt Zhuge's conclusion, Sony is dominating. It's just he seems to have a habit of presenting numbers as factual when they seem more like good educated guesstimates by himself.

Sony is easy, they publish Sales and Operating Revenue along with Operating Income (bottom line profit/loss) for Game & Network Services each and every quarter. Microsoft make you work for it. They'll publish an absolute revenue figure very occasionally then for many quarters will only report revenue increasing or decreasing on a percentage or value basis so you have to work for those figures. Why would anybody do this?

yeah but thats all lumped together, consoles sales, software and accessories. Same applies for MS, though they have even more non console stuff in their division. So at the moment we can't see what console hardware only revenue is

Good to see Until Dawn doing well.

Europe loves Ps4. And yeah, i truly hope Until Dawn sells well, it's a great game, really fun.

Yes and as I said above it wasn't immediately clear to me that the graph represented only revenue for console hardware given that data appears seems to lack any useful value. Raw sales number are a far more accurate metric to determine which manufacturer is selling more hardware and those numbers are reported more often, albeit sometimes split between sales and shipped numbers.
