well obviously not as high, but we're only at the start this gen - if we ass-u-me PS4 will sell around 3x where it's at now - then that's as high as 3 in 10 households having a PS4 (ok, there will be households with multiple, but you get the idea. now add in the XBO figures - we must be talking around 50% of households have a PS4/XBO pulling figures out of the air.

Of on another tangent.

Got a test report back from a large ISP in Germany, they did some tests on some WiFi equipment we sell. One test point was compatibility/interop with game consoles, only PS3 and PS4 was listed on that. I assume the X360 have a decent market share in Germany, so thought it weird that they did not have that one on the list at least. Quite anecdotal I know, but still.

What's the source on that NPD/GFK figure Zhuge?

Anyways, PS4/XO should be around 40m shipped combined (25/15), so yeah that leaves 11 million out there which strikes me as a bit high amount because no matter what anybody says NA/EU are the vast majority of the market. They're in rest of world and the channel I guess.

The source is NPD and GfK for North American and European markets.

Bear in mind this is sold through number you're comparing to sell in. Plus it's not exact 29m on the dot, it could be higher. The territories not tracked include but are not limited to Japan, Asia, Middle East, Afrrica, Eastern Europe, Australasia, South America.

via Chobel on GAF:
According to IDC the current install base for both PS4 and XB1 in China exceeded 300K.

Also revenue for official console games in China exceeded 100 million yuan (~$16.1 million), compared to mobile revenue which reached 21 billion yuan (~$3.4 billion). Damn you mobile!

IDC and Niko partners expect to see another 250k consoles sold through rest of the year.

Bonus info: PS4 has more than 70 games launching in the country officially. Not bad Sony, not bad.

Excuse me? How many PS2s were sold here?? Last time I checked, there's around 25 million households in the UK and I'm fairly sure Sony did not sell 10 million PS2s here. Right?

The PS2 did indeed sell 10 million in the UK. (10.01m if you want to be a bit more precise)

The PS1 did 7.2m, PS3 has done 6m, PS4 is over 2m so far.

The PS2 remains the best selling home console in the UK.

Numbers are via GfK Chart-Track

(I'm in the UK as well btw *Waves* )

Hmm, no breakdown on platforms, though.

Still gives us an idea I suppose. Is not too many sales, but something.

Edit: Well there is some guy called Dreamgazer on GAF who appears to have some chinese sales insider info who says this (in response to a bunch of gaffers jumping to the assumption sales must be 80:20 in PS4's favor)

The gap is less than 80:20.

Don't read too much into the PS4 first month sales vs X1 8 month sales comparison.
Both consoles were front heavy in terms of sales and then saw their relative numbers plummet in the subsequent months. This can be interpreted as a sign that consoles are still pretty much a niche, hardcore-specific market in China. Although that group has largely returned to import units.

T-Mall (official reseller of PS4/X1) and JD both have monthly sales number featured on their website. Anyone can reliably compare those monthly numbers to deduct the overall trend. I can not reveal other retail sources I may or may not have, so mods feel free to ban me if you feel I'm reaching into insider territory. (I'm willing to reveal them to Shouta, he knows where to find me.)

*returns to really passive role*

Someone said it is more 70:30 and he said nothing against it. But it is anecdotal sales for Sony or MS... And maybe consoles will never been a big market in China...

You can trust everything dreamgazer says.

For this number however there is no known split and guessing one doesn't make it right.

All we know is PS4 is the leader. By how much? No idea.

What should be taken away from my tweet is the total size of the install base.

Sony try to have local content, I hope for them it will means a significant growth of console market in China in the 5 next years....

Wow I had no idea. I thought the UK was a single digit (million) kind of place - but the PS2 was just something else.

Although incredible numbers, putting that into perspective, 40% of (UK) households played console games. Contrast that with ~100% that watch TV, movies and listen to music, and lower proportions of consoles in other markets. The 'living room' was never about computer games. The very name 'PlayStation' was all encompassing as the (household) entertainment platform because the target audience was 'anyone who likes to be entertained'.

  • GTA Online monthly active users are up 40% in 2015 vs 2014. More people playing online with more than 70% of those with an internet connection having played online at least once.
