Hence it is unlikely we'll ever get good numbers for online sales. Valve, for example, won't report any numbers and heavily discourages (prohibits) anyone selling on Steam from reporting Steam sales numbers for their games.

SB

Wasn't there just an ars technica article on steam sales a couple of days ago? That had actual numbers.

Those aren't real numbers. What they are doing is looking at a lot of public player profiles and then extrapolating various types of data from it. It is interesting but accuracy is questionable. They claim accuracy of +/- 10% which is itself questionable but probably reasonable. Which is a potential 20% swing. Assuming it lays within that +/- 10% area.

Like VGChartz they are constantly revising numbers. Unlike VGChartz they never get access to accurate or reasonably accurate historical data. They do occasionally get to look at a developer's internal sales numbers for Steam. But those developers risk having their game removed from Steam if Valve finds out they are doing that.

Titanfall: Digital edition (PC) is the #17 best selling game for 2015 and the #4 best selling game for March so far. If it stays at #4 (unlikely) I doubt it'd show up on NPD whereas it likely would if it was a physical copy.
BF4: Premium Service (PC Online Code) at #7 for March and #59 for 2015 is doing massively better than the than any other BF4 SKU.
etc
Look at companies Sales data in financial reports which you trust, yes. OK you will see all PC software sales (>90% digital sales & some physical) are still just minor compared to consoles (physical & digital sales)

Yes, I've addressed that before. It also wouldn't surprise me if the profit margin from PC sales was similar to the profit margin from console sales due to the digital nature of the sales. IE - there is significantly less cost of sales associated with a digital product than a physical one. For some publishers it wouldnt' surprise me at all if PC profits were greater than any single console's profits. Likewise for some publishers it would be less as they don't even make many PC games.

For example, for Konami PC has 10% unit sales compared to 8% XBO, 11% X360, 20% PS4 and 35% PS3. It's likely that PC profits are higher than XBO and X360. And there's a good chance that PC profits are higher than PS4 profits. Revenue will be lower than all of those, however. But while revenue is important it is only important based on how much profit it generates. And this is a company that didn't even put much focus on PC sales in the past. But because of this they are committed now to making more titles available on PC.

So Aquamarine at GAF wrote a long post about how NPD is becoming "increasingly vicious" towards leakers and finally shut her down. Apparently they have known her identity for a while and she knew they knew, but she did not lose her job. She asked and was permabanned.

Anyways I'm not sure how much actual effect this will have on numbers leaks at GAF, there's still more tactful and useful leakers like creamsugar, all we really need is his hardware pie charts.

Still hoping oneday NPD wises up and gets back to releasing basic top line hardware and top 10 software like the good old days.

Holy shit. Welp. I guess after that burn all leaks with respect to a lot of things are going to stop in the gaming industry.

Doubt it. As I said, other more discreet leakers dont seem to have problems.

We'll see today but I'm expecting the usual mishmash.

And then people say, "when will PS4 get pricedrop"? :D

Ms PR
“Xbox One’s fan base continues to grow with record February sales in the U.S. for Xbox One and 84 percent more consoles sold compared to January 2015. In February 2015, fans spent an average of 74 hours on Xbox Live in the U.S. – three times the amount of hours the average user spends on social networks*. And, Xbox Live set new records, quadrupling global gaming hours on Xbox One and Xbox 360 in February 2015 compared to February 2014. We are grateful to our fans for choosing to play on Xbox One. Offerings and experiences will continue to expand with Xbox One and 'Halo: The Master Chief Collection' available together for $349, new games launching this month including 'ScreamRide' and 'Ori and the Blind Forest,' hundreds of new ID@Xbox games in development, and plans to make gaming even better on Windows 10 and Xbox.” – Mike Nichols, Corporate Vice President, Xbox Marketing, Microsoft

So apparently the math is Xbox One~276k.

Pretty solid February for X1. February 2014~258k, but that was kind of still riding launch coattails.

We also have all variants of 3DS=395k from Nintendo.

And then a debate whether that means PS4>395k, or Sony meant home consoles only when they said PS4 was #1 for the month.

Nintendo PR. So PS4 < 395k

Nintendo 3DS is Best-Selling Hardware Platform in February

The one-two-three punch of New Nintendo 3DS XL, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate helped Nintendo 3DS become the top-selling hardware platform in the United States in February. All three products launched in the United States on Feb. 13, and even with only 17 days of data being reported they were able to accomplish the following:

In its 48th month on the market, the Nintendo 3DS family sold nearly 395,000 units in the U.S. The great majority of these sales were New Nintendo 3DS XL systems, which sold 130 percent more units in its initial frame than Nintendo 3DS XL did when it launched on Aug. 19, 2012.
The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask 3D was the top-selling title for the month with more than 515,000 combined physical and digital units sold. The game is now the fastest-selling Legend of Zelda hand-held title in U.S. history.
Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate sold more than 290,000 combined physical and digital units and is now the fastest-selling Monster Hunter title – across all platforms – in U.S. history. In addition, the game has the highest Metascore of any Monster Hunter title and is also Capcom’s fastest-selling title on the Nintendo 3DS platform in U.S. history.
Through the first two months of 2015, sales of Nintendo 3DS hardware have increased by more than 90 percent over sales in the same period in 2014.

Nintendo also saw strong results for Wii U, which had its best year ever in 2014 and has continued to build on that momentum in 2015. Specific achievements include:

So far in 2015, sales of Wii U hardware have increased by more than 20 percent over sales in the same period in 2014.
Life-to-date sales of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and amiibo have surpassed 1.5 million total units and 3.5 million figures, respectively, an attach rate of nearly 2.5 amiibo figures per game unit sold.

The momentum for Nintendo software and systems should continue over the next few months thanks to a strong lineup of software that includes Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. (Nintendo 3DS, March 13), Mario Party 10 + Mario amiibo bundle (Wii U, March 20), Xenoblade Chronicles 3D (Nintendo 3DS, April 10) and Splatoon (Wii U, May).

Wii U number is 94k or (slightly probably) above I guess (based on Nintendo's percentages)

So we already have some estimates for X1, WiiU, and 3DS, not a bad start.

“Demand for PlayStation 4 remains incredibly strong in the U.S. as it was No. 1 in hardware and software sales in February, according to the latest NPD report,” a Sony spokesperson said in a statement.
