MS used a pressure sale tactic. Maybe that effectively shifted the early 2015 sales back into the 2014 sheet, increasing Q4 and decreasing Q1 for a zero sum.

Amazon hourly: PS4 #9, XB1 out of the top 20. I can't say I understand it. If people were willing to pay $350 for the bundle in Dec, why not Jan? Same bundle and same price!

Post Christmas and like I have said before most people buying Xbox One at 349 dollars were people wanting to buy an Xbox One but not at 399 dollars.

Another problem is the lack of exclusive title for the first half of 2015...

Some people want an Xbox One but at 299 dollars or cheaper and they will wait...

I'm not sure about that. XBO for Jan. is performing about as expected compared to PS4 on Amazon. Meaning it isn't selling less well due to sales shifting to the Holiday months. Basically without the lowered price and holiday season, it's now selling about how it has relative to PS4 as it did for most of 2014 prior to the holidays. Perhaps slightly better than it did in most of 2014. Hard to say.

Perhaps some of the XB1 momentum in Nov and Dec was due to Halo? I've said it several times that MS timed the release perfectly. Granted price also a factor but I think some have under appreciated the importance of the timing of that games release.

More likely, momentum was there because console was $150 cheaper than on launch with two 2 free games on top of that. MS basically threw money on people to buy their console.

The XB1 amazon.com sales trend is also seen at amazon.co.uk, even considering that XB1 has more SKUs available:

PS4 has 4 SKUs ranked better than the gameless (and cheaper) £299 XB1 sku ranked 160.

PS4 with respectively the rank, rounded price and model : 48 £350 GTA5, 67 £329 black, 107 £328 white, 147 £380 (Fifa + Minecraft)

There was also $50 gift card deals @ $350 in December. Also, don't forget the $329 Cyber Monday deal. I think there was also momentum from Black Friday that spilled into December. I don't necessarily believe it due mainly to any specific games that kept December sales high. But I will agree with @London-boy & @goonergaz that Christmas is gone & parents are broke and only gamers who received gift cards for Christmas are buying in January. I think we might see a slight uptick in February & maybe March when people get their tax refunds. But I will agree it won't be enough to exceed or even match PS4 demand. I suspect we may not see that happen again until Halo 5 or Christmas.

I dont know about that, it was 50 cheaper (sans Kinect). There were some gift card deals beyond that but I think that's retailer doing. And then software, which is probably relatively cheap. I think DDR3 probably makes X1 not lose money at 349.

MS screwed up with the hardware and it's going to be tough this generation because of that. That's it. We've rehashed that enough.

Funny thing is it seems they are really pushing what hardware they have (freeing up the 7th CPU, all the new streamlined SDK and DX 12 news etc), so that the actual multiplatform gap is slimmer than ever, and certainly much slimmer than it was in 2013 (where we saw high profile X1 titles at 720P). I wonder if or when public perception will catch up to that.

And also, I've said this a zillion times, but I really personally think a significant factor in lower sales for X1 is that it really needs a redesign. The giant VCR design is not appealing at all, especially when it packs arguably less punch than the far more svelte PS4. The form factor is a big part of the overall product image, and I think X1 really lacks there. I guess if rumors and linkedin postings are any indication, we may see something on that front before long, maybe E3?

Well they had some really poor sales in early 14 (that's why they dropped Kinect in such a rush if we recall), so it'd be pretty hard to make that case. Whatever their sales are in the early months of 2015, they're likely to be higher year over year.

I doubt you will see an xbox one mini this year. A 20nm shrink on the apu wont be enough to do it unless they want it to be as noisy as the ps4 but that would make it ill suited for the tv and media applications. Then you still need a big enough board for that ddr 3

2016 with a 16nm drop would be the xbox one mini I would imagine

+1

I haven't been keen on the design since the unveiling. Too plain & bulky. Was hoping for something more like the 1st 360 slim. Anyway, I've gotten used to it. What other choice do I have, right? I'd rather have something smaller & one that I can stand vertical. My 360 has been standing vertical since Xmas 2006. And my TV stand has limited shelving so a vertical orientation works best with it. Now that I think about it, I'll probably will have to buy a whole new TV stand once I get the XB1. That's just great. If another XB1 form factor is coming at E3 I would definitely hold off until then. What's another few months?

Ars Technica followed Microsoft's earnings call yesterday and their Xbox analysis is:

Ars Technca said:
Computer and Gaming Hardware revenue was down 11 percent to $4.00 billion, with gross margin up 12 percent to $0.46 billion. On the one hand, Xbox revenue was down $703 million or 20 percent; total sales volume was down 10 percent, with the company selling 6.6 million Xboxes in the quarter, and average selling price also fell due to the Xbox One price cut.

Sales volume was down?

PS4 is noisy now... Didn't DF do ambient sound test and find both systems were comparable around the release last year?

Nevermind I looked it up both Eurogamer reviews from last year and both systems come in around 40dB for most activities.

XB1:

PS4:

I don't own an XB1 but while the box is bigger overall the systems are similar in design. Yes the PS4 has slant at the front but both are essentially black rectangles of average size. Neither is off putting or awe inspiring in any case. A redesign might help MS lower the cost but I doubt it would result in a sales boost.

I don't think people are THAT price sensitive. But I do believe that many who bought a Xbox One in December were going to buy one regardless. The cost is a factor, but it's not the only one. I think historically, people know that December is a good time to buy, which is why most sales are generated in November-December and not before. January is slumping, because as L-B puts it, people don't have money in January. ;) Also, I think most people that wanted a Xbox One in the past few months, got one in December already.

Xbox one is quitter , runs cooler and uses less power.

Also there are lots of reports from users of their ps4's getting noiser as they get older. I have multiple friends that complain about it

For me the size of the console doesn't matter , its still smaller than my htpc and my receiver. If they do decide to do a major shrink I'm hoping that there will be a revision of the larger one with a smaller apu and larger drive. I would grab that to replace my day one edition and take advantage of the best of both worlds.

its not a portable device so the size doesn't really bother me.

As I said both are about 40dB for most task, which is what the chart shows which unlike your suggestion shows both machines are about as noisy at each other. I can do a google search and find similar complaints about XB1 noise but do we really need to do that? XB1 does run cooler in spite of a faster CPU hence the bigger box, that didn't materially impact the ambient noise.

51dB is still a very good number though. How loud 51dB is for everyone really depends on what else you have running in your livingroom, how big it is and how much stuff you have in there. An empty room will result in a louder console. I can't say how noisy or quiet an Xbox One is, but seriously, anything quieter than a PS3slim is good (sounded like a vacuum cleaner at times - and I'm just going to ignore mentioning the PS3fat, which was even worse).

I hear my PS4 definitely when under load, like when running DriveClub and then going into the OS options. That game is clearly pushing the hardware. But anyway, going back to topic, I bet that the price drop and Halo MCC were at the very least equal contributors to the Holiday sales. Afterwards, I think raising the price and then dropping it again probably did more harm than good. They need games more than anything.

I never hear my PS4. It is basically silent and I sit less than a meter away from it.

My X1 has coil wine sound when idling which is super annoying. During gaming it is as silent as the PS4 and I don't hear it.

I never use the consoles other than for gaming.

But lets not forget: in comparison, the Box is a huge ugly monster and even has the power adapter outside (itself quite huge), which is really a disadvantage in my home entertainment setup.

So, from an engineering point of view, their is imo no contest between those consoles...Sony knows how to built hardware, they just don't know how to do os software, which is as annoying as MS' bad hardware skills.

Oh, one exception: my dual shock sticks are basically destroyed...the rubber somehow disappears from normal gaming. Maybe the reason so many DS are sold!
