My guesses would be:
18.5-19M PS4
10-11M XB1

Only official information we have is 18.5M PS4s sold as of January 5th, and 10M XB1s shipped as of November 12th.

edit: pretty much what BRiT said.

I would venture that we are talking about 19M PS4 vs 12-13M XB1, which is a gap of 6-7M. What was the lead for X360 when PS3 was introduced and how was the lead after PS3 had been 1 year in the market?

The gap was just over five million units when the PlayStation 3 launched, but it grew to more than eight million units as the PlayStation 3 struggled to take off when it first launched.

Answered my own question and yes its vgcharts, but that number must have been "fixed" in retrospect as its assumed they usually do.

New question is then, is it just price that matters?

The $50 cut in the last week moved the XB1 from #20 to #13 on Amazon hourly. So clearly price plays a part, but the PS4 is #9 and $50 more, so there is something else. Call it momentum?

Price plays a part in that right now, more people find the PS4 better value than the One, even at $50 more, because of what the PS4 offers. From what we can see in the market.

As, I think Shifty, mentioned before, how many people willing to buy at that price didn't already grab one when the last sale had a sunset date?

I would guess most people didn't know about the date.
And no doubt some thought it was a bluff, i.e. that Microsoft would make the price reduction permanent, and decided to wait. The next couple of month's complete sales will be an interesting test of this.

it would interesting to know what percentage of these buyers are jumping ib bc a buddy bought a console. We know there is an online multi-player multiplier.

If PS4 continue to be ahead one of the reason will probably be price cut are better with games release or november/December period...

Not enough AAA exclusive release this quarter on XboX One.

From my understanding MS XB1 North American sales 'alone', out total all other XB1 territories combined on a monthly bases. Almost a 20-22% difference...

I'm gathering it's 6.1-6.2 million sold in North America and 4.7-4.8 million combined between all other XB1 territories. So we're looking at 10.8-11 million XB1's sold worldwide...

It's not much, but AMD mentioned this in their latest financial report for calendar Q4 2014:
  • Strong demand continued for AMD-based game consoles, with Microsoft and Sony having shipped nearly 30 million consoles to-date. Sony also recently announced plans to release PlayStation4 in the People's Republic of China.

I think MS shipped 10/11 millions Xbox One end of 2014.

And Sony 19/20 millions PS4

Knowing that Sony has sold through 18.5 million units as of January 4th, it wouldn't be surprising if a million or so units were still in the distribution/retail channels worldwide during that period. I had XB1 sales pegged at 10.8-11 million units sold through worldwide... I'm starting to wonder about that. Could sales actually be under 10 million, knowing what MS mentioned in November?

So things have stabilized for the XBO on Amazon while the PS4 continues to move up in the midweek update to the monthly rankings.

08 - PS4 (up 2 spots)
16 - XBO: AC (unchanged)

Digital gift cards continue to hold 4 of the top 6 spots. Yay, go DD.

SB

I think they sold through 9/9,5 millions consoles. Out of UK and US the Xbox One doesn't sell very well. The ratio PS4:Xbox One is much bigger than PS3:360.

In continental Europe no stock in many places for PS4 before Christmas but it is not the same situation in US and UK.

It's likely significantly higher than 9/9.5 million considering they sold over a million in Dec. in the US alone. Somewhere between 10-12 million seems reasonable.

The last number we have from from continental Europe, France or Germany, Spain, Italy were bad. UK sales are maybe equal or better than all other European country together...

Limited sales of Xbox One in continental Europe are probably less than cumulated November and December 2014 sales in US alone...

If 9-10 million is the case, then MS has a long road ahead on winning over consumers outside North America and the UK. Even with great pricing, freebies and bundling... it seems MS is missing something that's not resonating with consumers. China was their wildcard, now that card has pretty muched fizzled. Who's next? India?
