[360, PS3] Borderlands

I just wonder how many variables the weapons have to make them feel truly unique, or are they cheating on the numbers a little bit by saying if a weapon type has a damage range of 1-100, then that is 100 different guns.

Otherwise to get that many guns they've done a REALLY impressive job of making unique features that can be assigned in many combinations. Hopefully there are also a lot of cosmetic differences, which it seems there are.

It's basically a Diablo II style of "different" weapons.

So you'll have the base model. Then you'll have modifiers that are randomly applied to it if a mob drops a "special" item.

I'd imagine they are counting every possible modifier variation as a seperate weapon rather than just a different version of the same weapon.

So a Desert Eagle would be different weapon from a Desert Eagle with +1 dexterity (or whatever) for example. A better example mght be a Desert Eagle with a %chance to stun modifier. So there we now have 3 different weapons.

What will be interesting is if each of the modifiers had a unique graphics doodad add on. So each of those 3 Desert Eagles above would look slightly different due to a different graphics blob being added to the gun.

Shacknews Impressions

While my time with the game was brief, it made quite a strong impression on me. By the time I had to go, I could already feel the addiction setting in--that drive to slay just one more foe, to do just one more quest, to gain just one more level before leaving.
My adventures began in the Arid Hills, where I and the other three members of my team were tasked with retrieving a certain number of seeds from a nearby cave. It sounded like a simple quest--no one told us that we'd be ambushed by a Level 12 Alpha Skag.

Incidentally, that's how I learned to pay attention to a quest's recommended level.

That quest also helped me discover that it's not just the stats of your weapon that matter, but how you actually use it. Unlike a traditional action-RPG, where critical hits are more luck-of-the-draw than skill, Borderlands rewards careful aiming with extra damage.

For example, head shots.

That's not to say a weapon's stats aren't important, far from it. And because the various armaments spread across Pandora are procedurally generated a la Diablo, you'll probably have to make some tough calls as you examine what enemies drop.

Do you opt for the pistol that does a little less damage, but has better zoom for easier head shots? What about this assault rifle--it's a tad slower than the one you have now, but has a higher chance of setting foes on fire. Don't forget about that other pistol there, it won't do anything fancy like electrocute a guy, but it's got a blade on the end for higher melee damage. Or will you just go for power and take the slow rocket launcher?

As you gain slay bigger and badder foes and gain more experience, you'll also need to decide how to progress along your character's skill tree and which new abilities to unlock. Each class--fast-moving Lilith, Mordecai the Hunter, all-around soldier Roland and heavyweight powerhouse Brick--has its own set of special moves and abilities.

For example, Roland's deployable turret can be upgraded to heal nearby teammates or to just do more damage. As for Brick, you can beef him up to punch things even harder.

One thing that doesn't really come across in these videos is the game's sense of humor, such as robotic companion Claptrap casually remarking "Oh, you're still alive?" as you walk past or a mention of "momma's girly parts" being "busted" during some pre-mission dialog.

Obviously, I came away rather impressed from my time with an Xbox 360 preview build of Borderlands. That's not to say I don't have some reservations--comparing weapons in one's inventory was a bit clunky, the map's lack of a vertical indicator made it difficult to find an objective if it was above or below you, and I'm not quite sure if the game will be as addictive in offline, single-player form--but there's only one way to determine how valid those concerns are, and I'm more than willing to keep playing until I can find out.

Really stoked for this one. Find it odd that at least so far, there appears to be no EB pre-order perks and such. Small marketting budget? I would have pre-ordered already if that was the case.

I am also hugely stoked on the local two player splitscreen co-op ability. I can only play so much Sacred 2 with the wife.

=)

Cheers

I hate the cell shading, but I think hey were forced to change the art. Otherwise they would have looked like a Fallout 3 clone.

Anyone know if there is going to be a demo? I know open world games rarely have demos, but it would be nice if there was something.

Yeah the cell shading is turning me off this game. It was originally going to be a first day buy for me without even knowing much about the game just because it's Post Apoc.

I'll wait for reviews, and it has absolutely stellar gameplay with no game stopping bugs, I may pick it up. But right now, I'm REALLY not liking the Cell Shading.

Giant Bomb has a quick look. Jeff Gerstmann doesn't say he likes it, but he seems pretty excited. To me it looked dull as dirt, just shooting a bunch of samey critters with a bunch of slightly-different guns while running quests that are straight out of WoW. Maybe they just showed a boring part, but he did finish the game.

Sorry, is this game out already ? Someone posts some impressions please. I heard a few things but is the game fun to play ? I still need one more game to buy.

Yup pretty much the same as Diablo, just in 3D with guns.

If you hated Diablo, you'll probably hate this. If you liked Diablo (and Diablo type games) then you might like this game.

Now, to see whether bugs and non-working skills kill the game like what happened with Hellgate: London.

Still really not liking the Cell Shading though. Would be interesting if after you finished the game, there was a Bonus Unlock to provide traditional 3D rendered graphics. :D

Not sure if you already knew, but Futureshop/BB/Walmart are price-warring @ $40 for the moment... Maybe pick up a copy then wait for reviews? :p

Not sure if I should order online or wait for it to hit the store. Price might change like it did with Batman. For $40, I'd have no problem picking this up because I could trade it in and get my money back if it sucked.

I don't get the Canadian sales - they are all marked as "sold out". Not sure if this is because the allotted for pre-order copies are already all spoken for or if it is because the game has not been released yet.

Has anyone actually successfully ordered a copy for $40 yet?

Cheers

They should be in store at that same price until October 27th, while supplies last. I'm going to hit some stores at lunch.

Out in Europe this Friday, and the Eurogamer review is also this Friday. This is sometimes regarded as a bad sign, incidentally.

IGN review is supposed to be out this morning. Not that I really care about reviews, but if they give it a lukewarm reception, I'll probably stay away for a couple of days.

If you can only buy one more game, you may want to pick from Uncharted 2, Brutal Legend, R&C, Tekken 6, Forza 3, MW2, FF13 (JP), Dragon Age, ODST, Demon Souls, Left4Dead 2, or a few other titles I can't think of right now :) That's what's on my list anyway, lol.
