[360, PS3] Borderlands

I thought Borderlands was supposed to be a vehicle game? I haven't seen any vehicles since the initial Mad Max looking concept pics.

Edit: Never mind. There's some vehicle stuff in the vid above. I hope the vehicles are a big part of the game, and very customizable.

Very nice art style, I tried to achieve a similar look a few months ago but got nowhere near that quality
from wiki 'Randy Pitchford, the game's astounding arsenal will feature over 650,000 weapons'
comeon, couldnt they attain that million barrier, sheesh

actually from what I read it might be a fun game to play
I have a feeling its either gonna be a hit or miss (i.e. wont be like ~80% of games)

Well, If all they promise comes true, then this could be one fun game with a friend :) !
Sadly, not many of my friends have ps3s :( ! And all u online guys have different time zones . ANyways, I think it could be fun, but I need to see a gameplay session to tell !

and most reviews considered it one of the most beautiful games of the year as well

Now if only it had gameplay to match. Just finished it here after borrowing it from a friend.

I swear you could finish this in your sleep the game pretty much just plays itself. It's basically one step down from a interactive visual novel.

I mean not only is it on rails (BTW - I love games on rails) but it has to put up huge LOOK HERE - THIS IS THE WAY YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO GO IDIOT signs to hold your hand and tell you where you are supposed to go. And then slaps you silly if you decide to actually try to go anywhere it doesn't want you.

It's a shame. PoP Sands of Time was such a brilliant game, and this isn't even a pale shadow of an imitation.

Looks good though. Although I didn't like the cell shading. Bleh. But despite the cell shading it still ended up looking decent.

I hope to god the sequel moves away from this and more towards the gameplay of PoP Sands of Time.

Regards,
SB

Destructoid's PAX 2009 Game of the Show: Borderlands

Quote:
We nominated seven of the best games from the Penny Arcade Expo's show floor and let our community pick the best one of the bunch. Their pick? Gearbox Software's Borderlands. The upcoming PS3, Xbox 360 and PC title just edged out both Valve's Left for Dead 2 and Blizzard's Diablo III as the fan favorite, pushing ahead of Uncharted 2, God of War III, Mass Effect 2, and The Misadventures of of P. B. Winterbottom.

We had a lot of good things to say about the cell-shaded team-based first-person shooter/RPG this earlier summer in our preview, and many members of Destructoid's community echoed that after their hands-on sessions at PAX this past weekend. Words like "fresh" and "addicting" were thrown about heavily when talking about the game play and its twists on standard FPS, and just about everyone appreciated its funky cell-shaded visual style. PAX attendees were buzzing about the game the entire weekend, and the game's demo stations were always packed with lines. You couldn't go anywhere without hearing about Borderlands, so we weren't too surprised to see them take the prize. Congrats, Gearbox.

Borderlands will be released on October 20th.

?

I somehow doubt there are 650,000 really different weapons aside from different stats?

they wrote software to have the game generate the weapons. You go to vending machines or find on enemies, products from several manufacturers. Each vendor builds on the fly with various options based on influences of weapon types by that vendor.

So I imagine this is a randomizer with a maximum of 650,000 possibilities? Depending on how the stats work, would a gun that has slightly higher damage, but is otherwise identical to another gun, be considered unique?

I don't know that there is a limit and I'm not sure the devs know for sure as the info on the number has ranged form 1/2 million to millions.

Yes, look, feel, impact, damage, type of ammo and effect are all varied evidently. I personally would not see more than a couple thousand actually mattering but according to the play through, the possibility of trying out the next cool gadget or weapon is very addicting.

Destructoid Preview

By this point, I’m beginning to start to believe Pitchford’s "millions of guns" claim, and I’m also starting to get a bit worried for my own well-being. You see, there’s a lot of loot in Borderlands. It’s everywhere -- in boxes, in piles of waste you rummage through that’s scattered around the game’s wasteland… it even falls right out of enemies as they drop lifeless to the ground (these guys should consider fanny packs, maybe). So here’s the problem: It’s addicting, and with each gun I’m picking up being better than the last (with its own unique stats, look, and feel), I’m having a hard time knowing when this is going to stop.

"Okay," I’d say to myself every time I found a new weapon, "I need to go shoot something with this thing… immediately."

Before Gearbox pulled me off the units and sent me on my way, I had seen (maybe) 30 or 40 of the game’s "millions and millions of guns." Broken up into unique classes (like shotguns or rifles, for instance), each had its own unique look and feel. At one point, I picked up a gun that fired incendiary rounds, with a random chance that my targets would burst into flames. Let me tell you: when that happens, it's like experiencing an orgasm for the first time. I’m told some ammo has the ability to electrocute enemies. I want that, and I want to shoot something with it… right now.

I just wonder how many variables the weapons have to make them feel truly unique, or are they cheating on the numbers a little bit by saying if a weapon type has a damage range of 1-100, then that is 100 different guns.

Otherwise to get that many guns they've done a REALLY impressive job of making unique features that can be assigned in many combinations. Hopefully there are also a lot of cosmetic differences, which it seems there are.
