[360, PS3] Batman: Arkham Asylum

That was exactly what I was saying I was afraid of after playing the demo.

After playing it you get used to it. It's not so bad. There is still lots of oppurtunity for multiple ways of solving things.

Tell us more about the variations of the weapon modification. Do they seem robust or is it more of a 'choose how to upgrade your weapon now, but at the end you'll have them all anyway'?

Hmm, evidently the weapon modification is not like Bioshock. It's part of the "WayneTech" XP building. Their are 20 different things you can upgrade. You get upgrade slots for finishing major parts of the game. You then spend these slots(upgrades) on the 20 different items. These items are broken into 4 categories: combat combos, armor, batarang & secret category that I'm thinking is other gadgets. It seems you'll be able to unlock all of these throughout the game. So yes, I believe you'll have all of them at the end.

I should get mine today. Does anyone think the NVidea tech they're putting in the PC game will be that special. I've been invited to a 15 minute showcase and wondering if it's worth it...

There's a little showcase online already. It shows how smoke/steam is properly volumetric, how sheets of paper move realistically around your feet (including being pushed a bit by your foot at times), and how tiles in the flooring realistically brake to pieces when you damage them - that kind of stuff. Mostly stuff, to be honest, that I don't quite understand why it isn't in the PS3 version. Maybe you can go there just to ask them that, as there are plenty of other PS3 games using the PhysX library . ;) (I'm guessing that the renderer wasn't efficient enough to deal with the additional work)

Yeah, could ask. Do you have a link to this?

Really loving the game so far. Finally got outside & the outdoor level is immense. When you think island you think small, but that's not the case here. Kind of feels like Grand Theft Auto or Crackdown. There are also lots of side challenges that reinforce that idea. Plus it seems like you can roam everywhere on the island(provided you've unlocked some of the areas). Seems like this is planned since there are a lot of secret areas for the side challenges that you can't get to because you haven't leveled up to the necessary equipment to get there. This might be one of those games where I might actually have to buy a strategy guide. And I've never used one much less bought one. It's that big. I'm bound & determined to get 100% on the achievements, my gamerscore really needs it. Especially now that the dashboard shames you by only showing those games where you got 100%. LOL

I was surprised to see the Joker DLC on the PS Store yesterday, nice. Game is great so far, it's like a fun version of the Splinter Cell games.

Splinter Cell fans will have to buy this then, coz the Splinter Cell we liked is dead :( ....instead we have a new protagonist who is agile like Drake and gives squad commands to himself !

Now I understand why I wasn't able to clear the last part of the demo! I didn't know it was a stealth game, I kept attacking the goons and dying  ! I thought thats how superheroes behave ;) !

Here for instance.

Sold ! Going to get it today.

In Uncharted 2, stealth is also required in some levels.

Well the ones with powers maybe, but Batman is a rich guy with toys ;)

 Should have kept that in mind !

@patsu: Those effects are only in the PC version ! That too Nvidia !
Also, U2 does have stealth and SC:Conviction will have it too, but just that its not the SCell we loved any more. There's a difference , let me say HUGE difference, in movement speed of the main character and that changes the game completely. Batman in the demo is slow, like Sam used to be, slow deliberate timings to creep up behind a guy, put him in choke hold and take him to the shadows sounds completely different from a guy jumping around faster than a monkey and giving himself commands to automatically shoot guys in lightning fast speeds and jumping out of the window again !

As much as I enjoyed SC, I hated Sam's lack of agility. You mean to tell me you're a super agent but the best CQC move you can muster up is a damn elbow? :p That annoyed me to no end. I understand the purpose, to focus & force the player's approach to combat in a stealthily/tactical manner, but it was still incredibly frustrating to me all the same.

I am playing this game right now [more than half complete :)] & there are many things I saw in the game that led me to believe that consoles would've done the Physx exclusive effect just as nicely.

Basically physx on puts in everything Killzone 2 does on the PS3.

On a much smaller basis I must add, the destruction;smoke etc is more in KZ2 by a good margin.
And then there is Body Physics :)

How's the game then? How's the replay value ? Do the scenarios make u think? Do predefined methods seems to be in mind of the devs while making a scenario? I mean, when presented with a room of enemies, does it feel like, "Ok! Now I am supposed to break this wall, then the guys would move to this side. I can take the guy on the other side then."? Is it obvious set of events u need to follow to complete a mission, or is it more like" I am in this room now, what the hell do I do now !" ? Then u try different approaches till you clear-off th enemies.

To simplify it: Does the game's situations have set solutions(even if multiple) or is it totally your way in which you clear a challenge?
Either way the game could be great, just want to know which way the game treats you.

EDIT: Just watched the GT review. They seem extremely happy with this game :D ! Its a complete surprise for me. I don't know much of the backstory of Batman, neither will I be able to recognise most of the cast, as I have watched Batman cartoons but not that many.

@nightshade: Would you like to trade it once u have finiished it ? ;)

Got the game yesterday. It's pretty well made. I think they capture the essence and atmosphere of a Batman comic succintly.

My copy has a prepaid redemption sticker that says:
* "Dem Bones" Scarecrow Challenge Map

Is there a special level for people who preorder ? Did GameStop just give me someone else's preorder copy ? :p

That was part of a promotion with GameStop. I thought about ordering through them to get the map, but decided to use Amazon instead.

The reply value is probably standard fare for a single player game. However there is kind of a Crackdown hint to it with the Riddler's Challenges(over 200 of them). There are things you have to find like the orbs, but they're puzzle in nature. Kind of requires a thinking cap since some of them you can see but you're not sure how about getting to them. Trying to be vague in order not to spoil. In theory you could play the whole game without doing them, but I find myself playing slower & more methodical so I can do these as I go through the levels.

As for solutions, it's not totally free-form, but it's not totally linear either. There is a map that will give you waypoints for your next task & you can go about whatever way you want to accomplish it. If you want, you could just ignore the that & go do whatever else you want to do(explore the rest of the island, do Riddler Challenges). What gadgets you have will determine how much you're able to access. Anyway, there may only be 2 to 3 ways of doing things & sometimes there might only be one way. Some you'll have to put a thinking cap on. Basically it's got a Splinter Cell mechanic to it. So you can go slow & stealthy, but then without the hand-to-hand combat you won't rack up combos to help with leveling up. There's definitely a balance that was intentional. I haven't played the demo so I'm not sure what level was included, but if it's the first level it won't give you much of an idea of how some of the better later levels work.

BTW, the other half of the game (non-story mode) are challenge maps. Think horde mode but as a brawler. It comes with quite a few of them, but then there are also some that came with pre-orders. Dem Bones & Crime Alley. PS3 gets the ability to play all of the maps as the Joker, but no exclusive maps were included. It's just another playable character. I think this part of the game is where the majority of the replay value will come from. There's been talk that Eidos might release other playable characters or different Batman suits as DLC. Though people have already found out how to mod the character skins & models on the PC and have started creating their own. Anyway, I haven't tried any of maps yet. I decided pay more attention to the story first.
