[360, PS3] Batman: Arkham Asylum

Got the game yesterday. It's pretty well made. I think they capture the essence and atmosphere of a Batman comic succintly.

I saw you playing last night, check out the stuff in the video icon on the XBM, pretty cool. The Joker is pretty cool for the challenge maps, he has his own attack, animations, stink cloud and revolver.

What do you get from the riddler challenges? Just collectibles?

Different Riddler Challenges unlock different things. These include Experience Points for unlocking upgrades, Character Bios, Character Trophies, Challenge Rooms & audio tapes.

yeah I love playing as Joker - it's really funny :D Plus his voice actor is a genius.

The reply value is probably standard fare for a single player game. However there is kind of a Crackdown hint to it with the Riddler's Challenges(over 200 of them). There are things you have to find like the orbs, but they're puzzle in nature. Kind of requires a thinking cap since some of them you can see but you're not sure how about getting to them. Trying to be vague in order not to spoil. In theory you could play the whole game without doing them, but I find myself playing slower & more methodical so I can do these as I go through the levels.

As for solutions, it's not totally free-form, but it's not totally linear either. There is a map that will give you waypoints for your next task & you can go about whatever way you want to accomplish it. If you want, you could just ignore the that & go do whatever else you want to do(explore the rest of the island, do Riddler Challenges). What gadgets you have will determine how much you're able to access. Anyway, there may only be 2 to 3 ways of doing things & sometimes there might only be one way. Some you'll have to put a thinking cap on. Basically it's got a Splinter Cell mechanic to it. So you can go slow & stealthy, but then without the hand-to-hand combat you won't rack up combos to help with leveling up. There's definitely a balance that was intentional. I haven't played the demo so I'm not sure what level was included, but if it's the first level it won't give you much of an idea of how some of the better later levels work.

BTW, the other half of the game (non-story mode) are challenge maps. Think horde mode but as a brawler. It comes with quite a few of them, but then there are also some that came with pre-orders. Dem Bones & Crime Alley. PS3 gets the ability to play all of the maps as the Joker, but no exclusive maps were included. It's just another playable character. I think this part of the game is where the majority of the replay value will come from. There's been talk that Eidos might release other playable characters or different Batman suits as DLC. Though people have already found out how to mod the character skins & models on the PC and have started creating their own. Anyway, I haven't tried any of maps yet. I decided pay more attention to the story first.

WoW ! That sounds cool for me ! Infact it is more than I had expected ! I had thought it would be a straightforward action game..

This part has me more interested than everything else(coz this is totally new to me !) ! I love such puzzles. Is the game so freeform in traversal that such things can be accomplished? I am guesing secret routes to an area, which are not obvious at the first go. Nice ! Your mention of Crackdown hint is interesting! Does that mean freedom of traversal? Cool!

This seems very interesting. I will have to chk it out at someone's place, coz, If it cool then I would like to buy the ps3 version as working on the computer makes me wanna move back and relax from the mouse and KB when I want to play. Otherwise, I can always go for the PC version, which are priced pretty cheap here.

Mark Hamil? I know he's done a lot of computer game work. Is he still going in this field then?

Going strong. I see him crop up about as much (maybe more) as Nolan North. He's in Dragon Age too, isn't he? Well actually checking IMDB (cool that they track videogames now) that's very wrong, Nolan North is EVERYWHERE. But then again not all games are in there yet (like Dragon Age).

I think someone posted a youtube video showing some of the recording sessions for Dragon Age, showing Mark Hamill at work, pretty cool to see actually - he looked pretty scary. ;)

Yes, to an extent. There are areas that are locked if you don't progress through the campaign. You'll have to at least past the first main level where you get to go outside. That's the hub if you will to get access to all the different levels. You'll keep coming back to it after every main level. Plus, a lot of the challenges may not be accessible without the right gadgets.

I would definitely check out the demo or some video.

I see SIXAXIS support option in the Settings menu. What can you do with it ?

I turned it on, but haven't seen any prompt for it yet.

Probably for that high level Batrang. You can change its trajectory when you throw it, just like in Heavenly Sword.

Here is one upcoming game that features Mark Hamill. Personaly i cant wait to play this game.

Ah yes, that's the one I was thinking of, sorry for confusing it with Dragon Age, lol.

Picked this up. Pretty fun, also checked out the challenge rooms.

The Joker is a lot more fragile than Batman, as you might expect, but his moves are so crazy, it's hard to figure out what he's doing. Makes me wish they'd create another set of rooms for Harley Quinn.

I haven't got enough time to dwell into it too much, but from what I have played so far... the gameplay is simple but lends itself to deeper experience should you choose to go further. I like it this way because it suits my lifestyle.

Renegrade, I think you will enjoy this game. It's straightforward but not stupid. At least I don't know the answers to Riddler's extra puzzles yet. I have not visited the challenge room or the Blu-ray video.

From the manual (that little booklet that comes inside your game case), it can be used to:

- Control Batman's direction when gliding
- To control the direction of the Remote Controlled Batarang upgrade
- To shake off certain types of enemies
