Not that we didn't know it was going to happen, but I believe this is the first official confirmation of it.

Another question is will the premium units sold soon, be equiped with a 100GB HDD, instead of a price drop increase the value of the console...

Could be a good reason to buy a Core 360. You could get the Core + 100GB HDD for the price of the Premium with only a 20GB drive.

I noticed the 256MB was photoshopped onto a 64MB card. The 256MB card was confirmed but has there been any confirmation of the 100GB HDD?

Here is the current pricing structure...

$40 - 64MB memory card
$60 - 256MB memory card
$100 - 20GB HDD

If they stick to that the 100GB HDD would likely be priced around $150

Rediculous:devilish:

MS needs to fix these peripheral prices. Profit is one thing but when I can buy a retail Sony MS pro duo 2gb card for $100 and MS charges $60 for 256mb something is obviously very very wrong with that picture.

I saw that but wasn't sure of the "100GB" photoshop was done by MS to the photo in the presentation or by the site that posted the photo. I can't read Korean and I've never heard of the site so I don't know how credible they were.

EDIT: Looking closer at the 100GB HDD photo, I am now noticing 100 behind the presenter so I'll consider it legit.

That price seems likely since they won't be able to charge more than the HD DVD add-on. If that's the case they have to reduce the price of the 20GB HDD, but if it happens Core + 20GB HDD becomes cheaper then the Premium version, so they have to adjust the price for the Premium too, which is supposed not to happen in this year according to MS, but who knows what happens.

MS NEEDS to bump the 20GB HDD down to $49, and price the 100GB one at $99 in its place.

This WILL push Core sales, and once they get the core down to $149 (like they have planned by no later then Q1 2008), it will make the Core 360 the affordable well rounded next gen console to buy. Just like the PS2 was.

Yeah, exactly.

Why would it be a problem for MS if the Core+20HDD was less than the Premium? Isn't that what they ultimately are aiming for?

The Premium version still offers value above merely the addition of the HDD.

I'd say MS should lower the price of the 20GB HDD and put the 100GB HDD at its old price point. That would not only solve the storage issue, but it would also essentially be a price cut on the Core.

I'm not the best at math, but that would price the 20GB HDD lower than the 256MB memory card, why would any buy the memory card at that point? Even then, for double the price of the 20GB HDD @ 50 dollars you could get 5 times the storage space, so why would anybody buy the 20GB HDD? Unless you are REALLY short on cash. And @ 50 dollars thats only 10 dollars more than the 64mb card, making that pointless. So with that, you have 3 really weird priced accessories that would be odd for anyone to buy.

Anyways, I'm interested in seeing how they price this stuff. Honestly to me, it sounds like there will be a 360 price drop for the consoles (core + premium) in March, or atleast in the spring. But thats just my own speculation.

The Premium is probably around 60$* more profit over to the Core version. It wouldn't be in MS's interests to increase sales of the Core.

*I'm being generous. 20GB SATA 2,5" drives retail for 32USD, and it's safe to assume that there are much sweeter deals to be had for bulk orders.

I'm constantly amazed at the disconnect from thread to thread. Most threads are filled with discussions about how much of a loss MS is taking getting into the console business and how wrong it is that they are able to just throw away money in an attempt to gain marketshare.

Yet, in this thread, there's a claim that MS doesn't want to promote Core sales because they make less profit per unit. Well, why does the Core even exist then? See above.

How about this idea.

They drop the 20GB hard drive completely, except as part of the Premium, and charge $100 for the 100GB drive.

That way regardless of if you own a Core or Premium, if you want the 100GB drive you have to buy it seperately, but it doesn't mess with MS's pricing scheme.

Core exists for the perception, nothing else. If Core + 20GB HDD was cheaper than the Premium no one would buy Premium.

It's also possible that they phase out the 20GB Premium and introduce 100GB Premium instead to keep the price since the competitor's price is still higher for a while anyway.
