Interesting. I guess Norway must have different policies and prices for electricity because they have such a huge adoption of EVs, especially in a cold country.

Or maybe it's not so affordable because the Norwegians are so rich.
 
I think our adoption rate is pretty high as well, It is very much steered towards that with taxation over here. I also think the electricity prices are pretty low here in general. I think 8c/KWh is a great rate. That's 5.6€ for 70kWh.

Norway definitely has higher adoption though and they are richer as well :D
 
I'm almost coming up for a year with our electric passenger van. UK is relatively cheap for charging at home and more expensive than petrol on fast chargers. We've charged about 85% at home, 10% public and 5% stolen from the parent's house. Our cost per mile averages out to 4-5p, a third of our diesel cost per mile.
 
First, the Prologue lease terms are indeed pretty badass; my sister-in-law just leased one for (what I presume is) the exact same reason. It was like 10k miles per year, three years, for maybe $249 or $299 a month or some such? It was nuts how good the rate was. Second, even outside of California, L3 charging costs really do screw up a lot of potential "savings" of an EV. You still get to avoid oil changes (both engine and transmission) as well as brake pad swaps, for whatever those are worth. Still, charging at home isn't just about being cheaper, it's also about the convenience of not having to sit somewhere for 40 minutes waiting to charge.

Here in the suburbs of Memphis TN, we pay around $0.14/kWhr which means our Tesla Model Y performance will run us about $4 every time we "fill" it from ~40% to 75%, which is probably about once a week give or take. Alternatively, the local L3 Tesla 150KW chargers run about $0.39/kWhr which obviously hikes the price quite a bit. We also like to take ours on the quarterly road trip from Memphis to Louisville; we stop once in Nashville to charge and pee and find munchies... We used to stop at the Target at the west edge of the city on I40 where there's like 20 charging stalls, however they charge you by the minute rather than for the power directly. Instead, we now exit towards the north end of town off I65 where there's a Hilton hotel with maybe a dozen chargers in the back, and they charge for power rather than time. It's A: cheaper and B: honestly a bit nicer ameneties.

Also, I know PG&E offers (or used to offer) different rate plans for EV charging at night. DId they kill that off? I know some plans could get like REALLY cheap between maybe midnight and 4AM or some such.
 
They have EV charging plans but they're not really better than Time of Use plans, which sets peak rates from 4 to 9 PM.
 
Yeah, back when we used to live in Laguna Beach we used one of the time of use plans. Not because we had an EV, but because it was just the wife and I and we were (reasonably) comfortable leaving the windows open and fans on versus running the AC. We also didn't mind doing laundry in the early morning or later at night, and the dryer was gas powered so it wasn't super expensive to run either.

I assume your Prologue provides a charging schedule mechanism in the app or similar, for when you eventually get a home charger? Tesla finally updated their charging scheduler to now consider geolocation, so when we visit our family out of state we can adhere to their time of day rate plan vs at our own home where it's the same price all day every day...
 
Yes but I don't trust the scheduling software. For instance, it will start but it won't shut off.

I would use the app for the charger instead.
 
Oh wow, that's unfortunate. So it will start the charging session at your requested time, but it doesn't stop it? Strange.
 
The starting price of the cargo version is undercutting small Stellantis vans, assuming theUK price is similar to the Euro one. I'm hoping that the passenger version has some (relatively) cheap and cheerful options. They're certainly hinting in that direction.
 
Will pick up an aion y plus, got it for around 23k USD.

Fingers crossed my usual luck with electronics will be different. Or if I'll be hit with issues, please let the issues be clearly noticeable while in the dealership.

Any tips for things that I need to inspect / do?

I think the car's wireless charger cooked my Google pixel 6.

It leaves "burn in" marks in the shapes of the components under the screen... Like the fingerprint sensor.

Update:
i think this will be long drama of fiasco again.

just found out that the rims are rusting and some parts have rusted out
didnt notice it in delivery inspection as i only check the wheels from "above" while the rusts are only on 1 position. so depending on wheel's rotation, its not visible from "above".

Orange, I consider you as a virtual friend akin to DigitalWanderer, and I have to say -- you somehow collect the very worst luck of anyone I've ever met, virtually or in real life :)

I do agree with the comments you received on your reddit thread though. The hub of the rotor where it meets the hub of your wheel will tend to collect surface rust, especially if it sits for a little while. This is because the hub of your rotor is made of the same ductile iron as your brake rotor surfaces, and that type of iron is both A: a good quality and inexpensive brake surface for disk brakes and B: easily collects surface rust, but not in a way that so easily perforates. It looks bad, but it isn't structurally significant.

The gap between your wheel hub and the rotor is concerning, in the sense that it does suggest your wheel isn't tightened down correctly. That gap isn't from rust, it's either the lug nuts need to be correctly torqued OR your wheel is catastrophically bent (and you'd know if this was true, because the whole car would wobble as you drove it IF the wheel was truly so bent.) It really looks like someone needs to tighten that wheel down.
 
So here's my AION Y Plus review, after using it for around a month.



I was torn between:

  • GAC AION Y Plus
  • Geely EX5
  • AION V
  • Wuling Cloud EV

I finally went with the AION Y Plus because they had a promo for the 2024 old stock (there are impacts from the old stock, discussed in the cons section) which made the price very competitive with the Wuling Cloud EV.

Now, the AION Y Plus has become my go-to for every day stuff, and it's also great for shopping because of the self-opening trunk. Anyway, here are the good, the bad, and... its unique quirks.

The Wow Factors

  • Insanely Spacious: Seriously, this car is super duper spacious. I'm 178cm tall and still have plenty of room in both the front and back. I even find the back more comfortable. My pregnant wife is also comfortable in the back with the ample legroom, and it's easy to bring stuff and put it between the front/back seats.
  • Hills? No Problem!: No drama with gear changes or anything. Electric cars are just like that, the acceleration is very smooth and responsive. But I didn't expect with the spec and price to be so much lower than the Ioniq 5, yet the ease of climbing hills is similar. I thought it would be sluggish, considering the AION Y Plus's motor specs are lower. Or are all electric cars just that zippy on hills?
  • Comfortable Minimalist Interior: The trims are soft, and the steering wheel is comfortable to grip. The design is minimalist but still elegant.
  • ADAS Features: The driver assistance features are quite helpful, especially for long trips. But yeah, it tends to stick to the left, which is nice for relaxing in the left lane (im in RHD region). Oh, another good thing is that the ADAS can automatically resume after I temporarily take over, like after moving to the right lane to overtake and then back to the left lane, it automatically resumes.
  • Smooth Ride: For me, for some reason, it feels more comfortable than the Ioniq 5 at low speeds. It feels smoother. Maybe it's just different tuning? The Ioniq 5's suspension specs are better.

The Uh-Ohs

  • Car Shakes Above 80km/h: Seriously, it's very uncomfortable and scary. True that most highways don't have a max speed of 100km/h... Luckily, after complaining to the service center, they did something, and this problem disappeared, and the steering also became heavier and more stable. The rust spots were also cleaned by the service center.
  • Piano Black Everywhere!: There's piano black plastic on touch areas in the interior, like the door armrests. Piano black plastic gets dirty and scratched easily. But they don't allow protective plastic to be applied, saying it voids the warranty.
  • Only One USB!: This is a real pain. In this day and age, how can there only be one USB-A? Luckily, I bought an extra adapter so we can charge our phones together. Okay, okay, it's not strictly just one. There's another one in the back, and one more behind the rearview mirror, which they say is for a dashcam since you're not allowed to take power from other sources.
  • Wireless Charger Too Powerful?: After charging my Google Pixel there for a few hours, the screen seemed to be burnt. Here's a video explanation from AION (15:40), judge for yourself. English subtitle is available.
  • Limited Steering Wheel Adjustment: The steering wheel only goes up and down, not forward and backward. So for me, at 178cm tall, it's a bit hard to find the perfect driving position.

The Hmm... Unique Things

  • My wife says the front looks like a cat's whiskers. Anyway, it's quite eye-catching on the road. I don't know if it's in a good way or what... Anyway, not suitable for those who prefer a low profile or a "saner" design.
  • I really like the hazard button's position, it's easy to reach. Right in the middle, easy to press with my left hand.
  • There's a spare tire in the trunk! This is very rare in electric cars these days.
  • The ambient light is adjustable, and my favorite setting is OFF (so it doesn't reflect on the windshield at night).
  • There's a small hook next to the front passenger glove box. Handy for hanging a bag of fried snacks.
  • FREE WIFI HOTSPOT!!! From what I've checked, it seems to use 4G Telkomsel. But the signal is often worse than my phone's. I suspect the modem still uses the standard LTE bands in China. So there are bands in Indonesia that it's not compatible with, hence the worse signal.

Additional notes

  • Indomobil, the AION's local partner, seems half-hearted about selling. This car seems to have just been left in the yard and exposed to rain, etc. Resulting in rust in various places. Also, the shaking above 80km/h was fixed after I took it to the service center. The AC was incredibly noisy, fixed after I asked for an AC firmware update. These things should have been resolved before it reached the buyer.
  • OTA functionality exists but isn't full OTA. Infotainment updates, etc., are still manual at the dealer. Module updates (in my case, the aircon FW) are also done via OBD2.
  • Android Auto works well. Though unfortunately, it has no integration with the car itself, so it doesn't know the battery SoC, etc. And there's a bug that makes the map guidance and Google Assistant sounds way too loud.
  • The AION Wall Charger cannot get the night charging cashback promo. Don't believe what various AION parties and Wall charger partners say about being able to get the night charging cashback promo. Or ask for a written agreement on stamped paper that you can indeed get the night charging cashback promo. After the charger is installed, the AION partner just says it's not possible because the AION wall charger doesn't support the OCPP standard.
  • Public EV charging stations are still not 100% problem-free. I even got stranded once. People all around the world also complain a lot about public EV charging stations. And for some reason, the mobile app is very complicated AND slow AND buggy. I haven't used private charging stations because there aren't any in my city.

Anyway, overall, I'm quite satisfied with the AION Y Plus itself. This car is perfect for families who need a spacious, comfortable car. There are some shortcomings, but for me, the advantages far outweigh them, and the shortcomings are more related to Indomobil itself.

My sister bought an Inster and she likes it, but I think she is a lot more forgiving than me. One pedal driving needs to be reselected every drive and after reversing. The navigation announces rather late.

Bit scared about the stories of older Hyundai keyless entry being vulnerable to hacks (MITM/replay/whatever). Dunno if they ever really fixed that (it's quite a hard problem, 10x harder when doing it inside a Bluetooth stack).

Couple people in forums here also complaining about vibrations at highway speed. No fix yet after a month for the people who have it.

I wonder what's the cause.

My aion y plus is a totally different car but also got vibrations (and swaying) at highway speed. But it was fixed with a dealer service visit.

I don't know what they did to solve it. I don't know the cause. As by the time I picked up my car, basically nobody was there.
