Zone of the Enders 2: PAL Special Edition version!

Hmm, perhaps Konami tweaked the code for the PAL release, cause in the NTSC release the slowdown is anything but 'not noticable' :p

Did you guys get the special boxed edition? Lucky bastards!

I don't know about other releases, but I didn't notice slowdowns with my copy of Japanese ZOE2, even of the whole screen is enemies trying to attack me.

But I am not really very deep into it.

I also don't remember seeing any noticeable slowdown during the 'fembot lazer sequence', for example. It happens a bit when you destroy surroundings in that scene, but not when she shoots that laser - I actually remember being quite impressed by that.

I'm a lot more upset by games with choppy framerates (those that skip frames) than the slowdown of the kind that Zoe2 has. It's just a lot more annoying visually to me. In Zoe2, sometimes It actually looks more like a cinematic slow-motion effect because it happens in the midst of huge explosions and such.

You called?

OOOPS! How do you put the genie back into the bottle? :D

Another possibility is that you are early on in the game whereby you have yet faced some major ass slowdowns.

Perhaps. I did make it to the ring battle with the yellow AI fembot boss enemy where she killed me (first time I died), didn't see that much in the way of slowdown really except when I blew up scenery so smoke filled the screen along with lots of enemies, or when Anubis used that shower-of-red-particles homing burst attack on me.

The game didn't get syrupy though, it just dropped every other frame, it was still perfectly playable.

Actually your first boss battle(that fembot whatsher name) has slowdowns whenever she goes LASZERWHAMMBOOEE!

Her golden shower didn't slow down at all on my PS2, not for a second.

Very average textures

I find nothing wrong with them. Most of the time the action's so thick I don't have time to even look at them.

Overall 8 - good "old school" action game but it needs a bit more to qualify as an new school 3D action game.

ZoE *is* new school shooter, old school shooters didn't have an animated storyline. ;) Point overall is, it is a *shooter*, wtf do you expect? It has a hell of a lot of story for a shooter game. Too much really, considering how corny that story is. ;)

Dont get me wrong people, i have nothing against old school pattern based shooters, i can do them anytime. BUT i love shiny shine mechs and ZOE2 engine/controls/camera. It is such a waste for KCET to make ZOE2 yet another simple plain jane button masher/shooter(ableit one with many lighty lights!). Give me more AI more interactive/explorative environments and that be hell of a mech game. Metriod exploration + SC/MGS interactivity + Halo AI/scale + ZOE2 engine = m e c  h a shock!

Maybe that we have to waita next gen, less limitations on how interactive the games goin be. Though Pattern/combo based games needs more evolving imho.

Even for an old school patterned shooter, ZOE2 is quite simple compared to the rest. Lack of good combos and interesting patterned enemies. The boss battles are the only real yummy parts imho.

so because they can make an interactive GFXfest they should do so instead of a twitch title?

Does any PALers out there know what this 'polygon demo' announced on the cover is?

I haven't found anything on the net, but then, I haven't finished the game either, maybe you need to do that...

Zone of the Enders: the 2nd Runner (my impressions)

Having played the game extensively over the weekend, I thought it's about time to write down some impressions I've gathered so far:

presentation…

The first thing one is bound to notice is the excellent presentation of the game. Just like in Metal Gear Solid SOL, very nicely done intro and a stylish yet simple menu that screams for more. While watching the long intro and having to abort it due to the fear of catching some spoilers, I then started the game on the normal difficulty setting.

gameplay…

Having played the first part, it wasn’t hard to get into the game which really hasn’t changed much in controls or gameplay mechanics. The first two fights were a blast, though I quickly realized that my skills need some serious practise. Great to see that Konami has kept the training “learning mode†stuff – made it easy for me to get back into the moves.

graphics / sound…

Let me start with saying that I am absolutely blown away by the graphics. Truly amazing. I haven’t completed the game yet (I’m at the end of level 3), but having seen quite a few bits of the game, the train bit was probably the most insane experience yet. The sense of speed is amazing and all those particles. Wow. Image quality is as good as it gets – have not seen any visible aliasing of any sort, though I admit I really haven’t searched for them either. Framerate rarely drops if ever. The only instances I can think of, is when you have a couple of those yellow beams on screen that the framerate seems to take a hitch. Even during the most intense battles with up to hundreds of enemies on screen, firing those multiple rockets off doesn’t hit the framerate. Even if it does, so little that it’s bearably noticeable. I’ve played a bit with the engine and thought to have found something quite interesting. Somehow it always seemed that the own ship stayed constant, while the effects being on some other layer dropped frames. It’s strange to explain, especially the occurrence of loosing frames in the first place seems to be so minor in the first place to begin with. Oh, and I love the cell shaded look, something I wasn’t too sure about when I viewing the very first screens.

The music is also very good and suits the game fine. Puts you in a state of pure adrenalin which, well, I guess is just the right thing while playing this game.

finally…

Well to finish this off, I must say that I am really impressed by the game. I still haven’t completed it and am about 4 hours through the game being now at the end of level 3. I’m playing on normal, so it’s quite challenging and I am already looking forward to playing through a second time on hard. I hope the game will feature some replay value – I remember the first one didn’t have one, for me anyway. The story is okay, nothing spectacular, but I wasn’t expecting that anyway. It’s good enough by any means: keeps you going and isn’t an annoyance by any means. I’m also glad to see that the story so far has opened a few things, like for example what happened with the characters from part 1.

Another thing, I didn't read the previous replies yet in fear of spoilers. I'll be back when I finished the game, which should be sometime this week depending on how often I get a chance to play it! :D

EDIT:

Forgot one thing:

things I hate about this game...

Well, my hands hurt. :) Enough said, heh!!! 8)

i'll be pretty quick. got this game together with Burnout2 and....... i wont tell the other one or i'll get banned or something (considering i choose it instead of Soul Calibur 2)...

right, let me start by saying:

THIS GAME IS AMAZING. LOOKS AMAZING. SOUNDS AMAZING. plays like a shooter, so that comes down to taste. therefore, since i love shooters, IT PLAYS AMAZING.

slowdown IS there, but it can be a blessing, since it occurs quite often when the scene is horribly busy, in which case the slowdown SLOWS the action down and allows the player to take a breath. in ZOE2's case, slowdown doesnt skip frames, however it slows down the game itself, which can help sometimes. funny enough, it occurs the most in close ups and when destroying the environment. oh and also when there are big fat laser beams flying around.

oh and on a side note. this game is frikking HARD. i forgot how hard some games can get, and in the latest generations games have become much easier for one reason or another... well, i was fighting Vic Viper (the orbital frame of Leo, the guy from the first game) and it took me like 2 or 3 hours, i just kept dying all the time.... in comparison, Viola was much easier, i only died 3 times or so... god knows how hard Anubis is gonna be... cant wait to get there...

another thing, is the "graphical demo" to be unlocked? must be, cause i caouldnt find it in the menus...

Haven't got Z.O.E.2 yet (Busy weekend, I should buy it with SCII this week).
But I have the impression that the 'Polygon Demo' that is advertised in the back of the packaging, stands for just some extra polygon cut-scenes that are in the PAL version.
I'm not sure, nor have I any proof. I hope that there is an unlockable extra where you can view some scenes and models like in MGS2:Substance.

i've found items called "EX MISSION" which i think means, if u get them u get extra mission... i have the feeling this "Polygon demo" needs to be found..... and that really sucks cuz i'm never gonna find it...

In ZOE2 it is more like Max Payne's 'bullet time effect'. In that sense it doesn't feel like slowdown. If it was advertised in the package, I'd maybe buy into that.

...You were right LB, something should be done concerning the retarder's cockpit area.

and i wasnt even the one calling the first boss' laser beam "golden shower"

come on, be nice!! or this thread will be locked like jvd's chastity belt... j/k!![/i]

I'm sorry did someone just say slow down was a blessing ???????

in some typical situations it creates a lovely boss-dying-in-hub-of-fireworks look.

but for gameplay no definately not.
