Xbox360 sales

First, i have to say that i agree to most of the arguments given here (by Joshua for example).

But i must say i think most of them are "US centric".

There is no doubt for me that Microsoft have succeeded in finding its public in the States and made good strategy towards them.
Xbox 360 has great chance of performing way better than first try there.

Is it the case else where ?

- Japan : great efforts have been made but Japanese barely noticed them (Microsoft have a lot of work in front of it)
- Europe : i would say the same. IMO Xbox360 has not gained more momentum than its parent.

In my view, one of big factor of success of this machine in US was its "HD console" label.

Two things have helped :
- the rise of HD displays in US (which started last year), i mean available and affordable.
- The delay of PS3.
I think we can agree that waiting a whole year for a PS3, while you just bought a brand new "HD ready" (or more) display may be annoying.

In Europe, on the contrary, the rise of HD display have just started this christmas. Waiting a few month your PS3 is not a big deal.

One of the key point in Europe will be the price of the PS3 (and its label "True HD" console).

Ultimately, you can say that the 360 has only marginally outsold the XBOX's sales up to this point post-launch. This is a fact.

The problem comes when you try to draw conclusions from this. This is not possible without
putting it in the proper context. This is the problem I have with the article in the OP and some of the subsequent arguments.

So here's a conclusion that I think it is fair to draw: Similar numbers of people find the 360 to be a worthwhile purchase @ $399 as found the XBOX a worthwhile purchase @ $299 and $199.

I'd also like to say that the 360's having no next-gen competition wasn't really going to make it sell better. It might have prevented it from selling worse, though. But if it had weaker early sales, maybe we would have seen a price drop by now to stimulate sales.

Keep in mind that 2002 represents 10 months of sales for the Xbox while 2005 represents just two months of sales for the 360. So this comparsion is first 22 months for the xbox versus the first 14 months for the 360.

the xb360 has sold quite well, yes better than the xbox1 at a similar stage of its life.
though it certainly hasnt sold great + looks increasing like it will get overtaken by the wii within 6-8 months after launch,
3. Does the marginal increase in sales indicate the Xbox 360 is doomed to selling ~24M units in its first 5 years like the Xbox1?
just like inflation WRT console prices, eg what was once $200 is now $250. the same is true for console figures. due to more ppl able to purchase console, on average each generation sells more than the previous by about 10-20%
thus 24million last generation == 27->29million this generation
perhaps someone can check out the figures over the years
console generation 1 -> X million
console generation 2 -> X million
etc

2 points:
- Until September 2007, we will have summer holidays, so Microsoft will certainly be around the same range they were with first xbox.
- Even if the first european christmas of Xbox360 was only "half of a christmas" for this console, i think the range of the numbers would be the same (for the HD display availability reason i mentionned).

In the end, in Europe, as everywhere else, the way christmas 2007 will occur will give determinent informations on the future of the 3 consoles.

I am not sure about europe but the 360 is much much more success full in the states than the xbox ever was. The xbox never outsold the PS2 and the 360 has outsold the PS3 when it was not supply shorted. MS might not win but they have made a dent in sony and cemented themselves as a player for a long time with the 360. In japan I can not fault MS they have done all that is possible. Things like viva and blue dragon are pretty damn good efforts to draw gamers in.

Hmm where did you get those numbers?

xxxxxxx UK Fran Germ Spai Italy Others Totals
Xbox 2003 0.62 0.27 0.21 0.10 0.15 0.32 1.66
360 2006 0.75 0.31 0.26 0.11 0.17 0.35 1.95

looks like its kept to the formula, of 10-20% growth with each generation.
of note the UK is easily the xboxs most successful market in europe, the same with nz + oz (in fact WRT to the xbox1, nz + i think oz also were the two places where it succeeded most (even better than the US!) )
ive said it before, to become a major hit, ms need to target the non english speaking demographic better
