XBOX360 backwards compatible with XBOX1 confirmed!

If production of the current Xbox is to be halted soon then backwards compatibility will be a big factor since you won't be able to play many great Xbox games if you can't buy an Xbox.

@PC-Engine - yeh, combining Microsoft's statement that they will continue to make XBOX1 software through 2007 along with the fact that they will soon stop buying xbox1 graphic chips (Aug'05) doesn't make much sense unless XBOX360 is BC.

Gamespot has also picked up on the story... maybe they read this forum? (or CAG where I also posted this earlier in the night) ;)

It's looking like the issue is a legal one more than anything. I'd guess they'll put the functionality in there, and once they square things away with nvidia regarding patents, they'll be able to allow you to upgrade your xbox via a microtransaction that will pay your part of the patent fee.

How many XB360 owners are going to buy XB games? How long did PS2 owners still buy PS1 games before they switched solely to the next=gen software?

If XB360 allows current gen in higher res + aa, I can understand it. Otherwise I think it rather odd to see next-gen gamers buying current gen games. If that's the case, why bother with next-gen?! :?

Maybe because there won't be a buttload of AAA games at launch? Maybe because you can buy old AAA Xbox games for $20?

I bought some old classic that i missed on PS1 after buying a PS2. There wasn't much to play on it in the first year anyway so...

well for instance I never owned the original playstation so when I bought PS2 I bought 10-15 PS1 games to go with it. I'm sure many will buy XBOX360 that never bought the original XBOX and might want to play Halo, Morrowind, Fable, etc

fresh:
The only way to 'emulate' it perfectly would be to squeeze an Xbox1 inside the Xbox360 - like Sony did with the PS1 inside the PS2.
The PS2 isn't fully compatible with all PS games. The Xbox360 would just have to do an acceptable job, but even that's a tough proposition to work out.

Out of thousands of titles, it is compatible with 99% of them. The only games that I know of that did not work are a few Japanese games.

And thats if M$ can pull this off. I guess we'll see. If it is BC why not say so at the MTV event. I 100% sure the MTV audience would know what that means.

- Xenon has 256+ MB of unified memory
- The Xenon game disc drive is a 12× DVD with approximately 6 GB of usable space on the disk.
- Whether Xenon will be backward compatible involves a variety of factors, not the least of which is the massive development and testing effort required to allow Xbox games run on Xenon.[/b]

If correct, in my opinion these are the biggest disappointments of XBox 360 stats. (in case 256+ turns out to be 256, not 256+)

Another reason why it would be nice to have BC? How about not worrying about having to find a real expensive replacement DVD-ROM drive after yours bites the dust? Almost all the Xbox1 replacement parts are going to go through the roof in the coming weeks.

Another good reason? How about being able to save some money by trading in your old console? Keep the games since they can be played on the new one. I might not care about it, but my kids do. And I think that's where a lot of you are misjudging the potential for playing Xbox1 games on the Xbox360. My kids still play N64 and PS1 games even today. Most kids don't care if they're old or not. As long as they're still playable and fun, they're going to be playing them for a long time. I suspect that's the same with a lot of other kids too. Just another way for Microsoft to extend the life of the Xbox1 games. Remember it's the games, not the hardware. LOL ;)
