XBox One and Windows 10 Programs [UWP, X0, W10]

I am working on an UWP app myself now, hopefully I'll get it done enough in a few weeks to get it published. It's not a game really and nothing huge, but it's fun and useful for plenty of people I hope (it will be free).

The famous VLC is now an universal app and it has been send for approval already.

That's pretty cool. Although my universal video player of choice is Daum's PotPlayer. If there was a UWP version of that, I'd be tempted to see if my XBO could replace most of the functionality of my HTPC.

Haha, no, few webcams are good enough for that. ;) No, it's actually a food scanner. Scan the barcode of a product with your webcam, and it will lookup that product in the OpenFoodData database. Then it will take the nutrient information from there and display it, and parse the ingredients listing to distill all important information from it that can be processed. Then I display that in an easy to read format, detect EU number codes (because those are out of fashion and no longer shown), I extract allergy information, and support translating that to another language (currently from Dutch to English).

This I got working but currently working on the layout. When done I will add customer filters, for instance members of your family and their allergies or food preferences, which will then show up automatically when you scan the product, etc.

Crucially I want it to be scalable to very large letters, so that people with bad eyesight can easily read ingredients.

When done, I will probably both start lobbying for people helping to scan products so this app can read them, and perhaps expand the app with scanning features, and lobby with governments and shops to contribute data to an official, open database as clearly this is better than anything you can print on a package.

Isn't VLC Player open source?

VLC Player is also available for Xbox One. And it works! :D
thanks, I got it already on the PC, and it should appear on my Xbox One afterwards.
Kodi is now a universal app as well.
Kodi is pretty impressive, specially if you use the correct files to show channels. My GF's brother in law used Kodi for a long while and had a perfect setup for him, because he had all kinds of sports channels at hand.

He showed how it worked and I was impressed. He now uses Arenavision, which also uses VLC as its player, and he can watch all kind of sports channels for free.

I setup a beta test of my ReadTheIngredients UWP/UAP using the HockeyApp beta system. Seems like a decent setup for betas. If you are interested, PM me an email address to send the invite to. Would be particularly interesting for this thread to know if someone who has a Kinect camera can test to see if the barcode recognition on that works.

old Kinect or Kinect 2.0? I still have both, taking dust. I don't have the adapter though.

There's a wilde and confusing rumor that states that next uwp games will be dropin compatible with scorpio, meaning that a developer can write a game for uwp and it will be binary compatible for both windows and xbox one pro calendar edition.
Yes, but what about the xbox one poor edition?
And what about the good old optimize-console (the GOOC, vote for Spencer)?

Well that last question is probably the difference between the One S running everything at a slightly higher clock and the Pro clocking down to PS4 exactly.

Arwin, I tried your app, out of curiosity both to see what you can achieve when you are a skilled programmer and to test it -the Kinect thing, I need to see what to do to get around it, for instance-, but I installed your certificate before trying to install the program, but this message appears.

Either you need a new certificate installed for this app package, or you need a new app package with trusted certificates. Your system administrator or the app developer can help. A certificate chain processed, but terminated in a root certificate which isn’t trusted (0x800B0109).

I must say I only gave myself normal user rights, I don't want to use an admin account on any PC I own, for security reasons, although I know the admin's password, but I only use it in very specific situations.

Maybe just wait until I publish it on the store then ...
