Spotify as UWP?

uwp doesn't mean its going to x1, your able to specify which devices its available on.
unless the deal with Sony is over then its not happening, any reason to think that's not the case?

So many double negatives, I'm not sure what is not the case.

What usually is not the case is that contracts are evergreen. Contracts usually expire at some point. Therefore it's more likely to assume the Spotify contract with Sony will terminate than it is to assume that it never will.

it's fine to assume that, if you want to.
but a uwp app is no reason to expect that to be the case in of itself, unless its also specied that it is also being made available on x1.
there's many uwp apps that's not released on x1, is it a native uwp app or a centennial type one(uwp wrapped win32) that will not work on x1?

I asked if there's any reason to suspect the deal with Sony was over, as it may have been mentioned at some point that it was a years deal or something. That would be a better indication in my books.

No, the creation of the uwp app doesn't give any reason to suspect the deal with Sony is over. The last contract we have is from 2011 and that was two years with an optional third, so a new contract we wouldn't have seen would need to be in place.

However, considering there was a very clear termination date on the 2011 contract, we can assume the new contract has one a well and the creation of a uwp app would make it very easy for Spotify to immediately begin service on the Xbox upon that contract's termination - should they want to. Does it indicate it is imminent? No, the prior 2011 2 year + option year contract is more of an indicator that their exclusivity deal is likely expiring than the creation of the uwp app. The time does coincide nicely though, doesn't it?

That's an interesting point. If we assume that a second contract was signed for a similar period then it would have an expiration sometime in 2016 with an option for another year (2017). It doesn't say whether Spotify will come to XBO or not as I'm sure Sony would like to keep it exclusive. However, even if both parties are amenable to keeping it exclusive to the Sony platform, the creation of a UWP app gives Spotify additional negotiating power to get a more favorable contract. IE - Look we have a UWP app already in place that we can activate for XBO if a contract isn't signed.

I view the UWP app more as an indication that the contract is expiring this year than an indication that Spotify is coming to XBO. The latter will depend entirely on whether Spotify gets what it wants and whether Sony would still view that as a profitable partnership.

Alternatively, it could mean that Spotify is negotiating with Microsoft and hoping to get a more favorable deal from them. Something that would happen anyway, but a UWP app might make MS more amenable to whatever demands Spotify have. However, considering that Microsoft already has a music service on XBO, I doubt they'd be negotiating with Spotify for some sort of exclusive agreement.

UWP is just the best way to do a UI software that targets Windows Desktop, Laptop, Tablet, Phone, Hololens, etc. Even more so in the light of the Windows 10 S release, which is all App = UWP. So very efficient for Spotify, and relatively cheap to do. One of the reason's Spotify is king, is because it's on everything, just like Netflix. If Windows 10 S is to target students, Microsoft will also need it to have Spotify on there. Console platform politics will only affect whether or not the Xbox platform checkbox will be ticked when it is released to the Windows AppStore.

You can use it in a browser though. Not really disagreeing with your point - just that there's no necessity to have Spotify as an app.

win 10S also supports centennial uwp apps which x1 doesn't.

i have know idea what type of uwp Spotify is

edit: Am i mistaken about x1 being able to run centennial uwp?

I think UWP on xbox is a bit of a mess, to be honest. I'm unclear on all the details. They should allow keyboard and mouse, at least for apps. That would improve the app story significantly. Not having bluetooth support on the xbox was a massive mistake. They could have supported wireless keyboards and mice. It would be much better for the browser, but it would be a huge boost to apps. Gamepads are great for gaming, not for apps, especially when apps are typically designed for mice or touchscreens.

If I were Microsoft, I'd have put a button on the gamepad that functioned like alt-tab to switch quickly between fullscreen apps and not bothered with snap. Then have keyboard and mouse support for all the apps that would function better that way, which is a lot of them. Would be less work for devs, because it would be more of a straight port in terms of layout and interface from PC versions.
