Xbox 360 1080p – Why Not?

The pinout has actually been posted on this forum (or AVS, I can't remember) and it's pretty clear there's no room.

Really? Got proof? Because that seems to contridict what MS reps have said several times now.

It’s a shame that it wasn’t connected via HDMI, but the Microsoft representative assured me that the 360 can output over HDMI, but that there isn’t a cable available at present.

Or.....

Microsoft just got back to us to clarify the Xbox 360's ability to transmit a digital signal. In short, it can, which means that Microsoft could conceivably release an HDMI cable for the Xbox 360.

I went looking for the AV pinouts and couldn't find any detailed enough (those I found were incomplete), so I don't know if the connector has digital or not. However, those quotes you quote aren't from MS reps, but journalists, and I don't place much truck in journalists correctly conveying the information they're given! A quote from an MS rep saying something like 'our AV output supports digital output' is all that's needed, but they've given such a straight answer. It's always a case of 'our system is flexible enough to support HDMI when we decide to' or something equally ambiguous.

And just to add on... "Reps" may be an official source, but they're also not always the most informed either (think of them as car salesmen, some know their shit and others are total ass pirates looking to bend you over, YMMV).

Actually a surprising amount of the pins in the 360's connector are already used... They'd need at least 9 pins available to support HDMI and IIRC there's only 2 pins left unused in the current connector.

They have 30 pins available, and it's already possible to reuse pins depending on what mode the A/V connector is. For example, pins 3,4,7, and 8 do different things depending on if you're in composite, VGA, or component video mode.

Now I agree that it seems unlikely at this point that the existing 360 model can output HDMI, but you never know for sure.

It seems shortsighted that they didn't put the CAPABILITY in all along. Then they could have started selling a HDMI cable whenever they felt like it.

Unless, what is the cost of an "HDMI output"? It must be non-trivial since both Sony and Ms have had issues with it (the originally gimped Sony core pack)

It's still honestly all PR anyway, though. It wouldn't make any practical difference to me if my 360 had an HDMI out, I just bought a 720P that will likely last me a good while, except to make it feel more high tech and whiz bang, which does count for something. PR, it's all PR. The 360 doesn't need/want to be stereotyped as the lesser console, that things like this do.

I've been following that IGN article btw. They really dont have a clue what they're talking about or the core issues involved. Very poor reporting.

For example, when MS gives them that vague HDMI answer, they dont understand the issues enough to ask whether current 360's can output HDMI, or whether it needs to be built in to future models.

I remember reading an arstechnica article, where they state that ATI confirmed a digital output on machine, just needing a dongle. Can't seem to find the page now...

Any info seems inconclusive, considering how often this has been discussed! IIRC ATi's components will output digital (well that's a no-brainer) but it's the scaler chip that is assumed/known/guessed to only output an analogue signal. In all discussions the limiting factor has always been considered this scaler component. By replacing the scaler with one that supports digital out (if that's the limiting factor) then the system can be updated to add HDMI in a new SKU, which might be what MS have been talking about.

Again, if it were a simple cable thing, why hasn't a third party offered a digital cable? Would digital out need to be provided in a system OS update?

Another "choice" addon block for the xbox360 to be connected to the base system!?!
The thing is already starting to look like a Frankenstein's Monster!

All third party devices to be sold must be approved by MS, and only selected maufacturers are allowed to manufacture 3rd party accessories.
If MS hasn't wanted to offer a digital cable, I don't think the 3rd party manufacturers can start making one by their own without MS approval. Don't know about the more shady manufacturers though... is there any devices for xbox360 available from far east that are not from one of the official partners?
