Xbox 2007 or bust?

As good as gears of war 2 will be it won't be able to compete graphically with KZ2. As nice as the UE3 engine is it can't compete against 100+ people working to the metal getting every bit they can out of the PS3.

I don't see how you can pass this statement off as fact. The fact is that we have no idea how many of the other 2008 titles will stack up to KZ2. From what we've seen of KZ2 at E3, its graphics aren't infallible.

Not infallible but way ahead of what the UE3 engine can do on the 360. I have a 360 and will be the first to admit KZ2 blows every UE3 engine game out of the water graphics wise on the 360. It is not really a fair contest an engine not really developed specifically around the 360 vs an engine tailor made for the PS3.

The one advantage all those sony first party developers have is learning to get every bit out of hard ware they can. Lets be honest no one really pushed the xbox to the limit like sony first party did with the PS2.

I don't want to get to far off topic but the original article is 100% correct this is do or die for the 360. Everything is in place now we will see if MS will hold up their end. The game line up is there the 360 has the superior version of madden/NCCA football. There is never going to be a better time than this for the 360 platform.

In all likelihood the 360 will do well this holiday season.

Yes, if the 360 does poorly this Christmas it likely to end up in 3rd place as if MS can't do well with a new Halo franchise plus a bevy of highly anticipated games then how can anyone expect them to move units in 2008. A good holiday season for MS is amost a given at this point and its hard to imagine that the 360 will have stale sales, so why focus on such a point. Its almost like saying "The PS3 is going to be a distant 3rd if we don't see another price cut before 2009."

However, 1st or 2nd place isn't in the bag if MS pulls off a big holiday. They pulled off big holiday sales when Halo 2 dropped but MS couldn't maintain the momemtum and the PS2 quickly regained its dominance in the market. There is nothing to say whether or not that will happen again (loss of momemtum).

It's not do or die for the Xbox 360 right now.

The 360 has yet to even be priced into mass market yet and we don't know what the sales will look like for the holidays when Microsoft releases Halo 3 and lowers the price of the machine. If Microsoft really wanted to push sales what it would do is swallow the cost of the 360 and offer Halo 3 as a pack-in title. But MS is looking for those profits...and I guess due to the recent increase in warranty the 360 is failing at creating a profit.

The point is, the PS3's big year will be in 2008 in terms of games and sales. That's where Sony is hoping to make its big strike.

All MS has to do is lower the price, have a big marketing push, and build the momentum for the 360 and it will have a fine if not better 2008 than it had 2007. Keep the quality games coming and MS will be just fine, just lower the price so that it approaches the mass market.

If anything it's more about who can stay competitive through Xmas.

If Sony is competitive sales wise with MS this Xmas, it boads well for the future of PS3, if MS dominates Sony in sales over the Xmas period, it'll make it a lot harder for Sony to maintain good 3rd party support through to Xmas 2008.

I think Wii will be the most interesting to watch, if it dominates through Xmas, it's going to be hard for MS and Sony to make up ground.

Personally I doubt the picture will be very much clearer coming out of XMas than it currently is.

I think this holiday season is the most critical for MS.
The console is on the brink of becoming "old" in the minds of massmarket consumers, and generating new interest, especially among those who have yet to buy a new gen console will only be increasingly more difficult when there's competition.
It's going to live or die on the merits of the games, those being available when the person is conteplating on the purchase.
Without a massmarket "sure hit" game like GTA4, I think xbox360 would actually be in trouble, at least in Europe, but in addition to that they'd need another, more family friendly game like "Singstar", "Buzz" - Quiz games, or "Wii Sports". A game that'd appeal to all the family.
Or a €100 price cut.
- and some magic to wipe away the image of a very unreliable piece of kit (is it already too late for this holiday, I think so)

In US they are pretty safe.
Japan I won't even mention.

The funny thing is, most 'analysts' were saying the same thing last year about this holiday season.

I wouldn't be surprised if we could use the quote again next year, as I still can't see a PS3 at a mass market price by then...

Totally disagree. Price cuts can be the difference of a normal holiday sales or a great holiday sales. In the case of the 360 i really do think they could garner some fantastic attention. Software does not normally sell expensive systems, or what the average consumer sees as expensive, in any substantial amount as you pointed out with the PS3 in 08. What is true with them is absolutly true with Microsoft as the key pricepoint is sub $300. Microsoft should really have no excuse to be supply constrained either, not this far in, that would be a little pathetic. Many systems are still floating around in stock and they're going to have months more before the holidays to increase that stock with what they see fit.

Well every system is always supply constrained. The question is at what price will MS sell every system they have. They may feel that a $50 price cut will achieve that, and they could be right. It's obvious that a $300 X360 will outsell a $350 X360, but that may be irrelevant.

Surely you know about a lot more than Alan Wake. Surely you are aware of these...

Fable 2, Gears of War 2, Halo Wars, Banjo Kazooie 3, Lost Odyssey, Cry On, Marvel Universe Online

This is just off the top of my head without research. I think we actually know about almost as many titles for the 360 as we do for the PS3 for 2008. It doesn't look like a weak lineup to me.

Of course, it remains to be seen whether the 360's lineup will match the strength of MGS4 and GT5 and so on.

I don't think that MGS4 is relevant in the US anymore, but GT5 is and both are relevant in Europe which is where MS is weaker than they want to be right now. They need to put something out that will impress the Euros.

You are absolutely right it comes down to if they have the nuts to do a second price drop and supply of the falcons. MS needs both to happen to have a monster xmass and be able to carry that momentum into 2008. Every casual MS can steal this xmass is one less for sony in 2008.

MS needs as much momentum as they can because MGS4, GT5 and KZ2 are coming. As good as gears of war 2 will be it won't be able to compete graphically with KZ2. As nice as the UE3 engine is it can't compete against 100+ people working to the metal getting every bit they can out of the PS3.

I'm not so sure about that. I don't think KZ2 looks better than Gears 1 right now, let alone Gears 2

+1

The UK is fine apparently, but that's about it...

The funny thing is, most 'analysts' were saying the same thing last year about this holiday season.

Heh, so true, yet rarely remembered.

The notion that 360 has nothing to show in 2008 is ridiculous. There's Alan Wake, there's Gears 2, there are the three Rare teams, there's Fable 2, there's Halo Wars, there's Splinter Cell 5, there will be GTA4 bundles to prepare for the downloadable episodes... and that are only the exclusives. Even if some of the 3rd party developers have gambled on the PS3 becoming a viable market for their games and have done the right thing under that assumption - by using it as a lead platform - I still expect the majority of multiplatform titles to look better on the 360 in 2008.

And maybe just as important, there's the magical $199 price point, which we might not see this holiday, but will probably see in 2008. And the long expected IPTV.

Question is: the wii will overtake x360 in sales this year... will the PS3 overtake MS next year? If the x360 manages to stay second in effect it "wins" for lack of a better term... MS' plan needs to be staying ahead of Sony.. not catching up to Nintendo.

Hi.

Can you provide me a link to the sales data that shows the 360 is "second" and needs to "catch up to Nintendo"?

Thanks.
