One benefit that iphone users scream about is that it cuts down on viruses or other issues that can be encountered when you get installers from other stores or random websites.
a buddy of mine was insistent to get discord from the windows store some years ago and when he told me i was like "ok i dont think there is an official discord app there" and he said "oh it must be i paid 10 dollars for it" and i was like "what?!? discord is free" and of course it turned out to be a scam but thankfully not a virus so i guess thats a win for the windows store? yay?
there might be a real discord app there now i havent checked but there is a ton of crapware there, as there is in any appstore
Yea I know same shit happens on all the store fronts. But that is what people like to claim
One thing I do like about the window store is that it syncs across my devices. So anything I install there its a quick instal on my surfaces

Search "Microsoft Authenticator" on the App Store. Cutting down on malware my ass. The first result is always a sponsored scam made to look like the real Microsoft Authenticator (the icons are clearly designed to fool someone who has only been given a description of it). It's incredible that Apple allows this. Almost criminally negligent IMO.

I guess everyone is different, but the only time I've ever struggled to find something on a HDD and needed to use an exhaustive system search is when I'm sifting through 15+ year old backup drives. Or similarly doing any kind of maintenance on someone else's computer and having to quickly acquaint myself with where they store stuff. Any day-to-day, week-to-week, month-to-month operation I tend to remember where things are on my own computer, and I don't think this thing is really designed to accommodate year-to-year and beyond. Maybe the average Windows user is just using a laptop with a single partition, single HDD and a heap of unsorted files dumped in the typical folders (downloads, mydocuments, desktop)? Maybe a legitimate accessibility feature for people with alzheimer's? Maybe it's just MS scrambling to productize apps/services based on AI hype and hoping it'll allow them to remarket and save Windows 11 instead of fast-tracking a Windows 12?
Even if this thing operates locally I wonder if there's any kind of checks for child pornography or other illicit material and then have the ability to phone home in the event it finds something. And even if they didn't now, would MS at some point have a legal obligation to add it?

Windows 11 officialy squeezed within the confines of 16GB storage.
I have every single game related file I've ever downloaded from the internet backed up on to cd-r, dvd-r all cunningly labelled "Backup" so I can tell their contents at a single glance
I also have backups of some games drives on 3.5" Sata drives so if the drive dies I just replace it with the backup drive and I'm good to go. I put a sticker on the drive and take a screenshot of the disk so I know what's on it.
I also have one of these in case I just need a few files or folders off one of my 3.5" or 2.5" backup drives

It's going to be fun figuring out how to turn it off. I'm guessing microsoft will make it difficult.
well its going to be off by default but the fear is that its a deep feature that cant be removed and then it can be secretly used by malware (other than the official recall malware)
I'm always skeptical, but I might explore some of those stripped down install images people make. Only problem I have with those is I worry about security updates, and then updating turning everything back on anyway
