Windows 10 [2014 - 2017]

So basically MS is giving away pirated copies of Win10 to pirated Windows user?
The key thing is how much Windows 10 these pirated Windows user get? how much is the upgrade price? Those who knowingly install pirated software usually price sensitive, so if the upgrade is expensive then they won't bite. If the upgrade is very cheap (cheaper than the retail Windows 10/8/7), then people that is buying new PC might as well install non genuine Windows 7/8 and upgrade it to 10.
Another key thing is that MS needs to make sure that people that are upgrading from non genuine will know that they are getting non genuine Win10 (and inform the difference between non genuine and genuine) and make the necessary check to see if their Windows is genuine or not before Win10 is being installed. A lot of people in country like China just buy PC pre-installed with Windows and they don't know/care about it as long as it works.

You're saying MS should make sure they're informing the pirates that their pirated copy of windows is being upgraded to a pirated copy of windows instead of a genuine one? Why? Do you think MS have some kind of responsibility to do that?

Aye, I'm fine with pirates upgrading their Windows to Windows 10 for free and then finding out their Windows is extremely limited until they pay the price to unlock full Windows. Even better if there is no way to revert to a previous version of Windows in that scenario.

However, the problem comes in with people who don't know they are using a pirated copy of Windows because the PC shop they bought the computer from was installing pirated copies of Windows. In such a case, it'd be fair if there was a warning to the user that their current copy of Windows isn't genuine (pirated) and thus after upgrade may not have all features enabled without paying to make it genuine.

Alternatively instead of a gimped version of Windows, perhaps it'll be something like Windows - Bing Edition. Only you can't change your search provider. Plus Ads will be served to you until you upgrade to full Windows. Or some combination of that.

Considering Lenovo has already experimented with advertising rootkits in the computer BIOS of systems they sell, I'm sure a company like Tencent wouldn't mind sharing some Ad revenue with Microsoft for Windows 10 upgrades they distribute to unlicensed users of Windows.

SB

No, they're saying that even if you can upgrade to Win10 it will still be non-genuine. I'd guess that any copy that MS has officially recognized as "non-genuine" will not upgrade, but those pirated copies that are fooling MS's checks atm will upgrade but won't turn any more genuine than they're now

I did it explains how you fixed your damaged files but not how they got damaged.

ps: this win 10 free for pirates makes me think ms's main objective is to get people using the windows store

I've been asked the same question before and I can only tell you what I've answered on previous occasions. I honestly don't know how on earth are those files damaged since this is done after a clean install using the ISO converted from the ESD file downloaded from Microsoft servers.

Their other objective is to consolidate their security efforts. It should also stop people bitching about not receiving security updates for their end-of-life'd OS, as was the case with Windows XP. By allowing users to upgrade to non-genuine Win10 from earlier non-genuine WinOS, Microsoft can more effectively remove a large percentage of targeted systems from the filthy hands of security exploits and botnets alike.

The PC users who hung onto their WinXP systems far beyond when they should have let it go proved to be a huge security nightmare for everyone. A part of that was because the pirated systems had no easy upgrade path to a supported system. Now there's little to no valid reason for users to stick with using EOL'd OSes.

But there's no upgrade path or free upgrade for Windows XP users.

Right, as no one should be on windows xp at all right now. It was end of life last year after being on extended life support for half a decade. The XP users should have been on at least Win7 / Win 8 as of last year. [ http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/end-support-help ] Their upgrade path is to jump to 8.1 and then to free Win10. Whats next, wanting upgrades from Windows ME or 98? ;)

Actually I misunderstood your intent in your post and thus my comment wasn't relevant.

No one on an older Windows XP machine should be upgrading anyway really. PC gamers haven't been able to use Windows XP due to the game requirements for at least 2-3 years now.

It was my understanding that Windows 10 won't be offered as a legit update to users with pirated versions of Windows 7/8.1 in the end.

They can update (I presume though windows update - as dirty pirates will be able to update anyway with an iso at some point) but will still be running an unlicensed version.

How does win 10 work with 4k screens, I'm using win 8.1 and its terrible. I assume they've improved it lots since these higher DPI screens are only going to become more common
