Wii impression thread

Played Excite Truck at EB today. I was so geared up to buy the Wii but after actually playing it my opinion has totally reversed. As someone put it, the game is like steering an ice cube going 90mph on a frozen lake. The game is awful and got old before the first race was even over.

The other main thing that irks me is how awful the game looked on a 720p display. I cant imagine how bad it will look on my 1080p. I guess I wouldnt mind much if they actually had HD capable games but even then the graphics and the wiimote just dont do it for me.

The Wii lacks the power to take you there in the end. While Zelda looks pretty good, the images are not as crisp or clear on HDTV as other consoles. The look is dated for lack of a better word.

Zelda is a GC game, not a Wii game ;) they just put in some wii controlls.

I still wonder actually how many people care about gfx in the end. I mean, if gfx were so important than why is the ps2 the best selling console? people would buy xbox, or pc if gfx were so important. Or why is ps2 still outselling x360? apperantly people rather have a cheap console with alot of games than a console with nex gen gfx at a high price and a ''small'' games collection. Nintendo its main goal is non gamers and casual gamers. Those dont care about gfx. Especially not the first group. So as long as everything looks xbox+ (wich should be possible) I dont think it will really hurt nintendo. Though id rather would have seen wii have better gfx.

But that is the choice nintendo had to make. They need to get the controller out there and that wont work if they charge 400+ dollar for a console because a non gamer and alot of casual gamers wont buy a console for that kind of money.

no, they'd rather have a "Playstation", unfortunately.

In order for your "people dont care about graphics" theory to be proven, then you would have to factor in the fact that a PS2 costs 3 times less than the X360 and has a stronger brand name...

Can we have some more impressions from people who've bought the console? Even better can we hear someone enthuse? A Nintendo fan perhaps? Point taken about some peoples reactions to the wiimote, but I'm a positive sort of guy - I wanna hear some good things too! :p

Negativity makes slider sad :(

Doesnt that just proves my point? apperantly people are more interrested in a low price and brand name than ubergfx.

No it doesnt.

It never occurd to you that for some people (kids) $400, let alone $600 on a console is just to expensive? So they have to settle for the next best thing?

Your simply basing your whole theory on sales numbers, since PS2 is outselling the X360, then graphics obviously arent important to the average consumer.

Thats like me saying that consumers dont care about car quality, the comfort of the ride, the performance or the looks, thats why the Toyota Corolla outsells the Mercedes S-Class by 1000 to 1. Therefore to the average consumer, using your theory, a toyota corolla is a better car than the Mercedes S-Class, because things like build quality, comfort and performance doesnt matter.

Sure thing :)

I have both the Wii and the 360 with a CRT HDTV. All impressions of the Wii on the CRT is based on the standard composite cables as I have yet to get hands on the component.

However, in my household (wife and 4 young kids - 3 girls and a baby boy) the Wii has become an instant hit. My girls simple love Wii sports. They cannot get enough of it and it is great to see them playing a video game while laughing have nothing but fun. Sure I can see that the graphics look a bit dated, but so far I have not heard a SINGLE complaint from the kids of the wife in regards to the graphics output of the Wii. And this is evening coming from my 9yr old daughter who loves Kameo on the 360 as well.

The new controllers in my opinion are fantastic. I can see a lot of potential with these controllers if developers take them seriously. I am sure Nintendo will and hopefully after the success Madden 07 is seeing on the Wii EA will as well.

The Virtual Console is also fantastic. I have downloaded Mario64, Bonks Adventure and Bomberman93 and all games look and play great over the Wii. It is also nice to see that a lot of the virtual console games can actually be played with the Wii mote. My wife is really looking forward to the older mario games and Castlevania IV.

Zelda TP is simply amazing and could very well end up being one of the best in the series. The graphics look fine although they are nowhere near what I have become used to seeing on the Xbox360. That being said though, Zelda is still the best game I have played this year (yes even beating out Gears of War) simply because the story and the production value is way beyond anything I have seen in a long long time.

So overall, the Wii in my household is a winner. I should say the XBox 360 is a winner as well and in my household both console seem to really complement each other nicely.

Thanks very much Anvil! I think I'm picking up a lot of love/hate on the Wiimote so this is good to hear.

Out of interest, have you tried anything else apart from Wii Sports and Zelda? I still can't quite comprehend how it works with Red Steel...

It's not much of a stretch to say that ALL Wii games are GC games with Wii controls, since Wii is basically an overclocked Gamecube with more memory. I'm not trying to get into the argument about whether graphics matter. . . but to imply that we are going to see graphics that are significantly better than Zelda:TP on the Wii seems a bit disingenuous.

Again, it seems like people are more interrested in a cheaper console than in a expensive console with next gen gfx. If people cared so much about the gfx they would save up the money for a ps2 and 3 new games and buy a xbox360. But alot of people dont do that. They buy ps2 instead. So apperantly that must be because they rather have fun playing games than waiting for ubergfx. Thus gfx are less important to them.

Well Wii probably isnt that slow. Nintendo reps said TP pushes gc to its limits but doesnt push Wii at all.

Got mine yesterday. First thing is, the cursor is responsive... almost like using a wireless pointer/mouse. I can see how the Wiimote will make web browsing on a console actually usable. I had some jittery cursor movements at first, until I adjusted the sensitivity.

Wiisports bundle is a brilliant idea. Played a couple of hours with family and still haven't opened Zelda TP yet. Wiisports is just a whole lot of fun with people. The games are simple, but I'm sure developers will be producing more complex sports games for the true hardcore later.

Even with the simple sports games, there are nuances. Like you can control the ball in tennis... with topspin, slice, and aim your shots through timing, just like the real thing. The wiimote is not just a gimmick, it's a great idea and is well executed. Nintendo has a winner on their hands.

I think resolution is the bigger problem there. I'd take HDTV with a standard controller over PAL with a mouse/pointer, any day!

Otherwise, I'm glad it's going well. I've a friend preorder it, and should be getting it around the 8th. Shouldn't be too long before I get a go.

Again, since you failed to understand that price is the main differensiating factor here, then i "my" theory is valid aswell.

When people buy cars, comfort, performance, looks, status, doesnt matter, otherwise people would save up for a Mercedes S-Class instead of buying a Toyota Corolla.

See how stupid that is?

This is basic economics. Demand x avaliability = price. Price determines demand and thus decides sales.

You do realize that the PSOne outsold the PS2 the first 1.5 years after it launched. I guess people didnt care about graphics then either eh?

The Xbox 360 could have had a Quad-SLI G80 setup with a kentfield Quad-Core Conroe cpu, giving just about photorealism and the best game in the world, and it still wouldnt sell more than the PS2 if it was priced to high. Simply because of the price differences.(this is an exageration) Just like a high end mercedes never will outsell an average low-end car, simply because of the price.

You cant simply say, "people would have saved up for it if they wanted it". Some people cannot. Most likely, the people who are buying PS2's this year, cannot afford a $400 console. Its also not a matter of just saving up, is a matter of getting value for your money. I can afford to go buy a Quad-SLI rig, that doesnt mean im gonna do it, because i feel that spending 2,000 USD on GPU's alone isnt worth it. Would i prefer the Quad-SLI over my current gaming rig? Ofcourse, but not at that price.

Okay, I said I'd butt out of this thread because the I feel that baseless negativity spoils the whole bushel.

I'll say this much, though. The Wii is worth the money in my experience so far.

I'm a Zelda whore. I've played every non-CDi Zelda; LTTP and OOT are easily two of the best games ever made for any platform IMHO. And TP is quite possibly better.

It's different, too. Epic, but with a different essence than OOT.

As for Wii Sports, I love the controls. It changes gameplay so much, and ups the fun factor substantially. X360 might never relinquish the online gaming crown to PS3 or Wii, but the Wii is my clear pick for living room multiplayer.

Super Monkey Ball is also very good. There's a bit of a learning curve to the controls, but once you get them, it's gold.

I also Raving Rabbits and the controls also work very well with this game (which btw is a blast to play with the kids).
