Why no talk about X850 yet???

According to the Beyond3D review it's fairly quiet and can't be heard over the CPU fans. And the warranted Overdrive OC of 648 mhz core and 646 mhz mem is pretty neat. 8)

But for the rest it's kinda of a boring upgrade.

Hmm.. but the X800XL performs pretty decent. :D

Would have helped to know if those noise figures were taken at idle.
The power draw/noise data from hkepc above seems pretty reasonable. The x800xl actually looks a bit better in terms of power draw than I would have guessed. An ATI Silencer, or Zalmans new active VGA cooler, will probably be able to tame the direct noise from the x800xl, although they obviously can't do anything about the contribution to the total power draw. Still, better than expected. Will be interesting to see if ATI cut any performance corners on that part.

I guess I'm going to have to make a trip down to Maplin one of these days and do a bit of shopping...

Dave Baumann, master of the cryptic and ambigous. :)
Make one wonder how your wife managed to get a straight "yes" out of you. Hot tongs?

Anyway, in the interest of helping you with noise evaluations, I hereby offer to send you a Zalman 7700 for your FX-55. Should do the job even at its quietest setting. Just let me know. Someone else can donate an Antec Phantom PSU. Then you're good to go, for all practical purposes, assuming suspended FDB hard drives.

Not this time. He's probably just referring to buying a decibel meter from Maplin electronics.

20dB? That's pretty close to silent, or at least ambient room noise, AFAIK. I thought stock X800 HSFs weren't as quiet as VGA Silencer v.3s?

Is there a difference b/w dB and dBA that I'm not taking into account? IIRC, a 3 dB difference is a doubling of noise. The 6800 HSFs are really 3x louder than the X800 HSFs?

The X800XL is the most exciting, IMO, especially since ATI said it could be passively cooled in a BTX system. Passive cooling for a 16-pipe GPU sounds pretty sweet.

"probably"
Actually, as a fellow Baumann interpreter, I tend to agreen wth this hypothesis, which was why I suggested that a serious effort to quiet his current test-rig might be useful. (Not to mention enjoyable!) His comment in the X850XT PE review that he couldn't hear the graphics card fan over the noise of the CPU fan even running 3D applications kind of implies that unless he quietens the rest of the system, he'll never get any useful data from an SPL meter.
under normal running modes, both desktop and 3D, it certainly couldn't be heard over the CPU fan noise
If this is true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, an SPL meter isn't much use. Going all passive cooling is awkward (but possible), but selecting the quietest fan assisted components is OTOH straightforward, cheap, and should yield adequate results to be able to evaluate the contributions of the gfx-card.

I was under the impression that a difference of 6 dB is percieved as "twice as loud". :?:

BTW, sorry for the sloppy linking - as max-pain already pointed out, the idle noise levels are labeled "üresjáratban" while the ones under load are labeled "terhelve" (and the rest run at a fixed speed).

Correct, twice as much power is 3 db. But to make it sound twice as loud you need 4 times as much power or 6 db.

There's 4 ranges - 40-70dB, 60-90dB, 80-110dB, 100-130dB
I believe that's what he said too - no ranges below 40dB. (Though I may be overlooking something.)
