When are the 65nm PS3's and XB360's shipping?

Loud disk scratching drives aren't going to be helped by process shrinks either. :???:

No, but they were helped by changing drives. There's a number of different drives in units, I believe most believe the ben-q is the best for noise, and I think only one was reported to have a problem with scratching disks.

All these drives don't have rubber pads that prevent discs from scratching. They only add about few pennies to the system cost, so i assume MS deliberately done it so people buy more softwares. ;)

Shrinking processes will do reduce disc warping up though.

i know that smaller processors won't help keep my discs from getting scratched, but you bring up a good point nonetheless (one that i really don't mean to change directions into, because i'm truly interested in when those 65nm chips are coming out).

however, just to clarify, you're saying that if i do something like THIS, then i'll ALSO be free from my dvd-rom scratching my discs!?

Oh great now they release HDMI Core a month after I bought the HDMI [strike]Premium[/strike] 20GB :p

Glad to know all models contain HDMI ports now ;)

euh
Sony indicated in a recent press conference that the company had already started production of parts of the PS3 chipset on a 65nm process. Microsoft had previously announced, along with its manufacturing partner Chartered Semiconductor, that the Xbox CPU would be moving to 65nm Silicon-on-Insulator (SOI) technology in the first quarter of 2007, although there are rumors that this migration may not be complete until the second quarter.

Sony already in the 65nm process:oops: ? ok

Yeah, that is really old news.

They at least started the production of 65 nm Cell CPUs in the beginning of the year. We don´t have any indications that they have actually started to use them in any SKU yet, but it´s just a matter of time since there are indications of a new SKU with a lower power envelope coming to the US. Sony may be trying to clear their stocks of 90 nm parts first.

Microsoft may also need to clear redundant stocks of 90 nm parts since the 360 has not really sold according to Microsofts expectations.

and

From neoGaf about the PS3
Evan Wilson (Pacific Crest): Could you give more detail on inventory of the PS3 at the end of the quarter, and how long you think it will take for that inventory to sell through? What is the possibility to get a cost-down version of the PS3 into the channel by the end of the year?

Nobuyuki Oneda: Our peak season is the November to December timeframe, but those two months are quantitatively so huge, so therefore, we have to pile up inventory, starting from the early stages, like the May-June period, because we have some capacity issues. So it is a monthly supply business. I couldn’t exactly tell the timing when the 65 nanometer version would be in the channel, but it will certainly be within the peak season.

maybe I'll put my hand on it at the end of the year

If it was me, I would wait until GPUs go 65nm as well. But I already have an elite, so I will probably deliberately make three red rings of death three times so I can get brand new one  Abuse of warranty. ;)

But why have they been delaying 65nm? Possibly due to limited resources?

It looks like they're dropping the Premium tag in the US now too.

Over here it's been just 'Xbox 360' for the 20GB model for a month or two.

Also, HDMI on all models confirmed as expected: cables 'sold separately' for non-Elites.

The "Premium" moniker was something retail came up with to differentiate it from the Core. Microsoft has always considered the 20gb SKU as just "Xbox 360" and not the "Premium" version.

MRCUR is back, and he's claiming 65nm (CPU) 360's have trickled into retail.

Apparantly, one can tell by the heatsink. I'm assuming he has valid reasoning for making the different heatsink=65nm connection.

Edit: Here is a picture of the user who has a different heatsink's CPU (allegedly possibly 65nm)

Here are a couple 90nm CPU pictures I dug up:

Any sleuth's want to take a crack? Is there a significant size difference? Hard for me tell.

I just got that 360 my colleague won and I bought from him for a very friendly price yesterday, being one of the later pre-HDMI Premiums, from the looks of it (will check serials later). It's definitely not quiet though, especially if you're coming from the PS3! Pff. It basically sounds like a reasonably loud PC.

And so far there hasn't even been a disc inside. Doesn't bode to well in that respect. :D

I wonder if 65nm chips will hit the market before we see price drops? You have to have a certain volume and yield before the cost savings even show up.
