What should Sony's Acquisition Plans Be? *spawn*

If Take Two / Rockstar were the company from PS2 era (three GTA games) or PS3 (two GTA games + RDR) then sure. But Rockstar's last massive hit was GTA V (2013). RDR2 (2018) was critically acclaimed but has not received anywhere near the same commercial success, i.e. gamers aren't buying it anywhere as much and why Rockstar are updated GTA V and not RDR2 for next gen consoles. Rumours have been circulating about turmoil for some years and GTA's mastermind - Dan Houser - walked last year. Yes, this is depressing.

Everybody else from Rockstar North is almost dead from deep-fried Mars-bar poisoning which is Scotland's staple breakfast, lunch and dinner ¯\_(ツ)_/

I was looking up the best selling video games of all time, and it just made me think of this post that you made and how different expectations are for Rockstar Studios than pretty much any other studio.

List of best-selling video games - Wikipedia

RDR2 has sold over 39 million units. That is more than any title sold by Sony, Activision, Blizzard ... heck pretty much anyone not named Nintendo. The only title that has sold as much or more for EA is Tetris. The only title that has sold as much or more for MS is Minecraft.

It's the 12th best selling video game of all time and people don't consider it a massive hit. :)

Just think about that, that is just bonkers mad, IMO. Yes, it's less than the 155+ million units that GTA V has sold, but to think that people don't believe RDR2 at 39 million units sold wasn't a massive hit? :)

Also, holy cow, I did not know that PUBG sold that many copies (70+ million units).

It's only natural as time moves forward that titles will sell better. I mean the atari 2600 only sold 30m units and that would be considered a failure in todays market. The NES/ Famicom sold 62m world wide. Today's games like GTA5 sold on the xbox 360/ps3 , xbox one/ ps4 and now the xbox series and ps5 . Through that time it was avalible on pc. So its no wonder it would have sold so much

I think GTA 5 has sold as well as it has because there hasn't been a sequel in a long time and if you wanted better performance on the console side you'd have to rebuy the game when you purchased a new console

Somewhat true. But if you look at the list. The best selling Mario game that Nintendo has ever sold was made in 1985. The best selling Pokemon game was made in 1996. The best selling EA game was made in 2006. The best selling Bandai-Namco game was made in 1980 (back before Namco merged with Bandai).

Games with generation spanning good gameplay will sell better than modern titles. Because the gameplay was always the main draw, there will always be people wanting to play it no matter what year it is.

Also, holy cow, Terraria (indie title) has sold over 35 million units. Again, good gameplay trumps good graphics. :)

Well for home consoles that is simple Nes= 62m , Super Nes = 49m , n64 33m , gamecube 21.75m , wii 102m

But franchises don't always retain the same selling power. If you look by the time Nintendo got a bigger platform than the NES , Wii sports moved 83m units above their previous best selling game Super Mario brothers which sold 58m units on their second best platform.

I didn't mention Wii Sports specifically because in all major territories outside of Japan it was included as a pack in title with the Wii console. Hence why the numbers for it are so high.

Was it ?

I mean isn't that why super mario and duck hunt are also high in sales ? Super mario was included as a pack in with almost all NES units in North America. My unit was Super mario , duck hunt and track and field with the power pad

Yeah, I wasn't going to mention Duck Hunt either. :p The original Super Mario Bros. was sold separately from the console Not surprising as the game was wasn't widely released in NA until 1987 (very limited release prior to that) while the NES was released in the US in 1985. There may have been some limited edition NES consoles that came with it, but in general it was sold seperately.

Basically the standard NES box didn't include any pack in games.

Nintendo Entertainment System Control Deck (1987) - 1. Consoles (Hardware) - LastDodo

However, some special editions did, like the Action Pack.

Here's a nice site with all the various NES console products.

Yea so how do we count that compared to non pack in games. I believe even super mario world for the snes came with the snes at one point.

Sony should/could aquire EA? Its in the leauge of what Activision-blizzard is ;)

Sony is already committed to spend $18.39 billion on strategic investments over the next three years. Their aim is to increase the number of consumers connected to their services from 160 million to 1 billion. I wonder how much of that is dedicated to the expansion of their development arm. Or how much they are willing to dig deeper into their pockets to compete with MS in capturing devs at this pace.

That's across all of Sony, so it also includes things like cameras and lenses and also automobile manufacturing. A couple billion was already spent on becoming a monopoly for Anime streaming.

Well thats really gonna happen

Not

hmmm unless they're talking about TVs and stuff, but gaming devices/PCs etc no chance in hell

Another thing to consider is that Sony is planning to make cars, which is also a huge investment.
I would suggest to wait for Activision Blizzard purchase completion and see the changes in the landscape as this acquisition really shuffles the board.

So I posted in here that if Sony were to buy EA (which I think would be a huge mistake since their value is in other companies ip) that they should start to move teams to reboot past franchises. Today the announcement for Crysis 4 came out. If you look Crytek took the older Crysis games and remastered them leading up to this announcement. This is the exact game plan I think Sony or any company that bought EA or a company with dormant ip should do. Reboot older games and in the lead up rerelease or remaster the older titles to create more interest in them.
