What console should bkilian buy? *spawn

I know bkillian spawned this thread, but isn't it a bit early to even attempt to figure out whether X or Y is better next-gen? At least until after May 21st, I fear it'll just devolve into console wars.

Anyway, I'd say there are more unique PS3 exclusives than there were on the 360, especially in the later years, and I somewhat expect that to continue in the future. Plus, this time around, Sony won't be starting from a 1 year $200 deficit, which means even if the two systems equal each other in numbers, Sony wins overall worldwide (I don't see Microsoft taking Europe and Japan is a lost cause, though it's quickly becoming a primary handheld market).

If you are not sure yet... I have a soccer ball and a grassy field for you

For Rock Band maybe they release a new game that allows you to bring over all your previous songs? And with most instruments connecting via USB those should at least be supported.

Rock Band is effectively no more. They are not releasing anymore songs and they have no plans to do any future Rock Band products. We either need to keep our PS3/360 in our entertainment setups available for RB, or we need BC with access to the song data.

Anyway how do you still get employee pricing bkillian if you left Microsoft?

You can still have friends at companies get you games cheap. That's how I was able to get games by Sony, Microsoft, EA, etc really cheap back in the day. Hardware at Microsoft wasn't a huge discount though.

Wow, my own thread... thanks guys... :runaway:

Microsoft Alumni. I pay $50 a year, and that allows me to keep my access to the company store, among other things. The $50 pays for itself if I buy two games, or a single copy of Windows. Buying Visual Studio pays for about 6 years of MSA.
Then you are basically not interested in games. Which is perfectly ok.
I'm not interested in _gaming_ in general. I am very interested in specific games. For instance, I have unopened copies of later Halo games, and Gears of Wars, and a number of Kinect games. But I paid full price for Tomb Raider, and Mass Effect 2 and 3, and Assassins Creed: Everything and Skyrim. I won't play a game just because it's a game, I only play games that grab my attention.

On a slightly larger scale, there are people who would say that if you are really interested in gaming, you would own at least two platforms, maybe three, money permitting. But that seems more contentious, than the idea than that the family decides whether or not there is room for a next gen console in a household based on whether or not Rockband and the 1000$ of DLC will run on it ;).

Personally, I would also be miffed if my Rockband and Singstar songs aren't available on the next-gen platforms, but that won't stop me from getting a next-gen system as soon as it is available (unless price/value ratio is out of the window of course).
That $1000 isn't far off, I have over 400 songs in my rock band library.

The next gen consoles have not yet sold me on their value prop. I can almost guarantee any game I'll be interested in will launch on 360 as well for at least the next year. I'll wait for my next gen fix until the MS company store stocks the console (Normally a while after release - they're way down the list in shipment priority) and I've decided how I'm going to handle the Rock Band situation.

(And I do own more than one platform, I do most of my gaming lately on my ipad ;))

I'm not sure how B3D will interpret this.

Well you clearly need it. Your ideas about what you want from computer games are completely wrong, but thankfully the public gestalt of the internet forum can put you right and make you a happier, more fulfilled person. :yep2:

Yes, think of it as a group intervention. Patsu and Rangers form legs, Squilliam, Brad and Tuna form arms and body and Shifty you form the head - Go Voltron Force!!!!

As the head, I claim the controlling vote and decree bkilian should spend his money on pie instead of consoles (but not pizza, which isn't pie).

Mmmm Pie....

Unfortunately, being South African, my idea of pie does not match the average American. My pies contain beef, and liver, and kidneys, and mutton. Not wussy fruit, or whipped cream, or rhubarb. :)

on a side note; nice rage tuna.

You bring up a good point about RockBand. I have some decent money into it also and I get the urge to embarrass myself on a semi regular basis. Would be nice to have that carry over.

Speaking of non gaming, I realized how lazy I am. I wanted to watch the movie "unthinkable" the other day and I reached for the xbox since it has the most options available via various services. Ended up paying some magic points to rent the movie and off I go.

I could have tried searching for it on Comcast On Demand but that slowness of the service just gets annoying. The PC is not an option since we both wanted to see it and frankly, I rather watch things on my HT than PC any day. The Bing search made it easy to find the movie, the options for playback and so forth.

I want more services going forward.

People have been mentioning Rock Band in this thread and coincidentally enough, yesterday I told a friend in a message that I had said goodbye to the franchise.

I had like 30GB worth of RB songs, more than 800 songs downloaded songs. I spent a LOT of money in the instruments, the 3 games and the DLC, more than 1000€, much more, I am sure.

I tend to revisit games but not this one.

If the game let people to play using the controller -like GH2 and GH3- and not just the instruments, then it would be great.

I had great times with it, and met special people playing it, but for me it was time to move on. No point in keeping that content if I wasn't going to play it 'cos of personal reasons, and lack of space in my room, and many other things.

I saved lots of space in my X360 Slim HD.

I'd say Microsoft usually start out with the better exclusive content. They were all guns blazing for the first few years with 360, then faded as Sony got their act together. They'll splurge on timed exclusives and fund some great stuff once more.

If they can initially offer more unique content that doesn't straddle generations with the 360/PS3 hanging on, if their system costs a bit less and Kinect is still popular, they could get a good start.

Rocksmith is gonna make it hard for me to trade in my 360. Everything else I could do away with pretty much in an instant. In fact, most of my gaming hardware and games are sitting in a box waiting to be sold/traded.

Sony already got the ball rolling with exclusive Destiny content.

IMO, exclusive content is going to be the worst thing ever, IMO. Either make the whole game exclusive or none of it exclusive.

I can already see a time when Super Duper Game Extreme comes out and has the following exclusives.

To play the beginning of the game, you must buy the exclusive beginning version for Console A.
To play the middle of the game, you must buy the exclusive middle version for Console B.
To play the end of the game, you must buy the exclusive end version for Console C.

Bleh.

Regards,
SB
