Uncharted : Drake's Fortune*

Ok - got home and checked and it is set to limited. Wasn't sure where it was set at and checked via game menu but not there. Exit the game, check display, and then found it.

It was set to limited - I'm assuming that is default as I have not set that before that I remember. I went ahead and changed it to full. Going to run through the game and see how it looks.

Dumb question - is that default and what does it do?

You should set RGB HDMI range to what your TV expects. If your TV expects Full and it gets Limited, blacks and whites won't be as black or white as they can be. If your TV expects Limited and it gets Full, the PS3 will be outputing black detail below and white detail above the clipping range of your TV.

Whether your TV expects Full or Limited is kind of random. My flagship Pioneer plasma (a Pro-150FD) expects Limited, for example, much to my surprise.

To test, set your XMB background colour to black, and see if setting the range to Full makes the XMB background look darker. If it does, then your TV takes Full, if it doesn't, your TV takes Limited.

May not sound like it but I do enjoy both of these games, just don't like the sort of metal or bright textures. I'm on a 1080p toshiba and set it to a different mode to make it a bit better - which is probably subjective I guess...

I suspect a lot of it is subjective. I personally love the look, the colors they used for the environments really pop on my tv making it a very beautiful game. I like what they did when the human characters as well, they went for a different look than games typically do and I find it really works for me. It's a fresh look overall.

Just completed this. This is GOTY without a doubt, I don't know why (or how) anyone in the media can suggest otherwise. The graphics are simply stunning, and while the game isn't especially challenging due to IMO the seamless loading/saving, when combined with the story it is an outstanding all-rounder.

Finished this game the other night. It was an amazing experience. The graphics, gameplay, and especially the sound come together to form a tremendously great game. I especially loved the music in this title. I still don't know my GOTY, but this is certainly a strong contender. Finally time to play Mass Effect and more of Galaxy.

i finished the game recently as well...

some comments of mine:

i wish there were more puzzles like tomb raider...almost everything was solved by climbing, i wish it had you explore for answers rather than having everything solved in the book, you run into a problem and it happens to be in the book

the cover system needs more polishing, sometimes wont go in to cover and sometimes wont go out of cover

game is a bit easy (i played on hard), its nothing compared to the hard difficulty of cod4...i had plenty of time to try and headshot most of the enemies including the later levels

ak47 is for the most part worthless...handguns seem to do more damage than rifles with the exception of the sniper rifle, but its matched by the revolver and the desert eagle

i do like that the AI tries to dodge your bullets, but when they go for cover, you can take your time and shoot at their limbs but when you go for cover and stick out a bit for a good amount of time, they cant hit you

the last fight was a lot easier than i thought it would be

now for the graphics, i think it looks good save for the texture popping and the plastic look of the characters (but thats more of a peeve of mines, for others it seems to be very acceptable)...some textures look horrible till you give it a few seconds then it loads to something nice looking

the animations are good as well

all in all, its a good game and is a must have for ps3 owners, i would not go so far as giving it GOTY however...IMO, nothing this year will top the COD4 sniper level, that alone will, for me, be a candidate for GOTY (but i will probably give it to super mario galaxy, which i believe is underrated since most people only judge it by the first few galaxies or by its "kiddie" image but im digressing), but im sure others will disagree

Considering this is their first PS3 game released and that between the PS2 generation and the PS3 generation they had to basically throw out of the window a lot of code (the transition between G.O.A.L. to a C/C++ focused environment for game engine code and tools took time)... well, it makes what Uncharted achieved EVEN MORE impressive IMHO.

hard isn't that much harder than normal. crushing, on the other hand, is quite a bit harder.

i found that the m4 was noticeably stronger than the ak47, which is strange... isn't the ak47 supposed to do more damage?

again, on crushing mode, its quite hard.

i think Uncharted has a strong case for GOTY, but i don't think it will win (but maybe for PS3 GOYY).

It won it on IGN, so it's off to a good start. ;)

Friends and colleagues are buying this game without me even talking about it, so it looks like it's heading for some good sales.

Things are a'changing. Sales in UK are going to increase once again.

Uncharted won the most awards on IGN.

Funny you should mention that, as I just got through reading an interview with one of the game devs that stated the same thing in the latest issue of Playstation the Official Magazine.

Seriously, I don't think you need to worry about Uncharted sale (or R&C's for that matter). They will be able to take care of themselves since the base product is attractive. Just make sure you enjoy the game and perhaps give ND feedback where possible so that they can improve.

Yeah, that's my assessment too. Hopefully they put the added time in Uncharted 2 to good use. Online and more/bigger gameplay innovation would be a good start. :p

Well they deserve strong advertising and it's only just coming through. And don't worry i've given them plenty of constructive feedback.

Mr Drake meets Ms Croft and embark on an Indiana Jones epic of hunts for lost relics eventually meeting up with Altairs spiritual decendant in a desperate race to get to the grail before the eponimous shadowy bad organisation does...

Just finished this game last night, good stuff! It did get more interesting in the second half as someone else had commented earlier so I'm glad I finished it. That level with the roman numerals on the platforms is one of the coolest levels I've ever seen, it definitely game me an Indiana Jones feeling. There's a couple of things I'd tweak for Uncharted 2. It currently seems to be a cross of Gears Of War and Tomb Raider. For the next game, I'd prefer they go less gears and more tomb. The gun fighting got a bit tiresome sometimes, and I miss the cool puzzles from Tomb Raider Legend. The other suggestion would be to have more varied environments. Their script mostly forced them into jungles, ruins, or some combination of the two. In comparison Tomb Raider Legend puts you in buildings, jungles, snow covered frozen locales, sky scrapers, etc, lots of nice variety. Still though, a very good game with memorable characters, great job.

Yap ! That's the Piranesi level (aka Goonies level). It was rather confusing at first. I kinda bumped into the solution accidentally.

Were you spooked by the game near the end ?
I pointed my gun in every direction as I navigated to the power room. Didn't take too long for me to just run for my life.
(except for the helicopter level where I had to chase after Navarro).

Seeing all the trailers, videos, pictures, I was prepared to be disappointed when I finally played the game. Happens alot.
I wasn't and I'm still speechless. I played the first chapters with L2 pressed just to look around.
The caves were awesome, the lighting....

At Chapter 13 now and so far I'm having a blast ... It's a bit daunting almost to hear that it will get even better!

Almost done my second playthrough on hard. For an experienced gamer,it's the difficulty level I would recommend. It's not so hard to be frustrating, but ups the difficulty enough that you need to be a little more careful and strategic making it more interesting IMO. It's seems this gen on most games I've played, that hard is the new normal.
Graphically the game hold ups on multiple playthroughs, still looks great. The only technical problem I have with the presentation is the texture pop in. Sometimes it can be quite long. Other than that it's a top notch game, not suprising realy from Naughty Dog. I can't wait to see what they do with more time and this engine applied to the next Jak game.

Embarrassing to say, but normal provides just the right challenge for me it seems.

Anyway, the texture pop-in thing is interesting. When do you start noticing it? I have had none so far (Chapter 13). The Spanish ruins level has been the least smooth so far, as it did have a fair bit of tearing and maybe even a bit of slowdown.

I'm starting to wonder whether texture pop-in is dependent on some external factors. I have a European launch PS3 and have only 720p enabled at the moment. Maybe the speed of the harddrive is a factor? Or newer revisions of the BluRay disc have better datarates? Or dirty lense or disc or something? Maybe it happens more in the second half of the game?
