Uncharted : Drake's Fortune*

Well hopefully the popularity of co-op online in H3 and GeOW will make developers making PS3 games put in such modes.

And ND and the Heavenly Sword developers may be taking notice, although sad to say, who knows if there will be sequels given the sales.

"the sales"? HS is at 650,000

Nariko ...

Anyway, the demo should have had a Kai section also, then the game would have sold even more. ;) I really liked those sections myself. I got to the end boss but didn't beat him yet.

I played another big session of Uncharted tonight, until just after the first driving section ... very nice! Great game, really enjoying myself, and the platforming and puzzling is just challenging enough for me so far. Also the shooting is energetic enough for me at Normal, I find, where originally I was telling myself I'd be all buff and try at Hard right away. lol.

Japan has a Nariko demo AND a Kai demo...

i think game reviews should start to give a score just based on the single player exp first then do their final score, since not every games are suited for a multiplayer.

nothings really wrong with Uncharted's sales either...
They are wrong from the POV that this is a first-rate showcase title that's scored highly and is platform exclusive. You'd hope it would sell better. When you consider the costs involved, making a good profit is going to need good sales, not just okay sales. But over the long haul, it may well get them.

I noticed it climbed in the UK all format charts from 23 last week to 13 this week. So that's looking healthy.
For some reason Sony only seem to market a game after it's been released.

I only saw adverts for R&C after I bought it, and there's been very little about Uncharted until last week.

It is a wonder for sure, Sony used to be on this marketing like a rash, yet they only seem to be marketing Singstar and the hardware with any sort of fervour.

The Dutch OPM does this. It works great and you only get an online review after the game is released. So they have really played online agianst a large number of players.

Can I ask what games in your opinion aren't repetitive? Uncharted breaks up the shooting with different gameplay. This contrasts strongly with the likes of Halo and GeOW which are the same thing ad infinitum. Seems to me almost every titles out there is the same gameplay throughout, and for longer games that means even more repetition. So I'd like to know what your comparison is.

Hide behind something and shoot. And repeat until bored to death. I liked the demo a lot but after ~3hours to the game I found myself bored of repeating the shoot&duck. Also I find the shooting enemies with wave after wave after wave unrealistic. Setup with "endless" enemies in the secret corridors breaks the immersion. How in the hell can there be loads of enemies in some secret passage that I just found out? Why not use some more imagination and add there something that actually could be there like some animals protecting the treasures or more booby traps to make platform/puzzle like elements.

Well, what would I have liked to see make these endless battles better? The answer is copy from mgs3 jungle setup. Let drake hide in grass and under water. Make drake able to crawl. Also make more alternate routes and enable more varied gameplay by making the levels more playable in stealth mode. These would have made the game from 8+ to 9. Add some kind of boss battles every now and then and get that 9+ and even more variety to the game.

To make drake 10- game I would have liked to see more robust story, now the plot seems like they just took cliches from adventure movies and pasted them as a single plot. Too predictable and the characters are really not that special or memorable. I would have liked more references to drakes past and give the clues to puzzles in different way to make the player think about the history of the eldorado treasure and people and come up with the solutions from there(and not just look a picture and arrange some statues to same formation as in picture). Think about old indiana jones and fate of atlantis game for example.

In the end I don't use(or like to use) so much time to play single game, I would rather take a 5hour game with no repetition than the same game with repetition and 10hour lasting experience. If the game is good I like to play it again. Also make the levels such that there actually is more replay value(think of mgs2/mgs3).

But I will finish drake's fortune this night and see if my opinion of the game changes for better or worse.

For halo/geow, those I dislike even more than drake... Last fps that got me really playing was original unreal tournament and before that quake2 online deathmatches. After those two games I haven't bothered with plain shooters.

Edit. For the non repetitive games I like(that come to my mind now)
heavenly sword(superb)
mgs2/mgs3

and games that have repetition with some kind of gimmick and I enjoy those lot
gran turismo
online shooters(quake2/unreal tournament). oK. these repeat a lot but the fun is in becoming better against playing other people

400k? Really? Already? Isn't that bloody great. I thought Heavenly Sword was just reaching 650k...

Where is this 400k number from? Thank you please, come again.

Satisfied

Beat the game tonight. Very very satsifying ending.

They really ratched up the gameplay toward the end and it was very intense all the way to it's climax. Many game endings recently have left me dissapointed (Bioshock I am looking at you). But Uncharted's was everything I could have wanted it to be, and more. The challenge was there. And it felt good when I beat it.

I need a cigarette now.

indeed, the point being that this exclusive (hyped since E3 05 blockbuster) was outsold approximately 3:1 at release on the PS3 by assassins creed.

BTW, what are peoples thoughts on Dolby Digital 5.1 vs DTS 5.1 in Uncharted?

Personally I played it in DTS the first time round. But my second play through I will try DD 5.1.

It does sound slightly different. Even just from the menu. Center seems a bit quieter by default in DTS but that's about the only difference I can make out so far.

nothings really wrong with Uncharted's sales either... its around ~400k worldwide already.

given the budget, the hype around this game, the review scores, the marketing and the developer its coming from, there is absolutely something wrong with uncharted sales, this should be a killer app, a reason to buy the PS3, or atleast thats what all of you guys kept telling me 1-2 months before this games release.

^_^ If you pay attention to the island at all, you would have spotted that the pirates have started digging and blowing up holes to gain access. So while Drake tracks down the treasure via clues in the diary, the pirates got ahead of him by blasting through the walls with the help of technologies. But as you can see, it's a very time and resource consuming process. The question is: Can Drake ever get ahead of them via the more efficient route ? Does the treasure even exist since the whole island is pretty much full of holes now ?

...complains about gameplay variety...

I think they are out of time. But now that they have nailed the engine, I hope they can devote more energy to gameplay breakthrough/innovation in Uncharted 2. Like you, I can see a lot of possibilities and potential for this franchise.

Complete the game and you'll see some of your feedback addressed. :)

Yes !!!! Heavenly Sword ! But Uncharted is not as monotonous as you think. Complete the game. I think the second part opens up more but your mileage may vary.
