Uncharted : Drake's Fortune*

I cannot wait to see what they do next time.

This sounds promising or not (from the chat here):

Evan_Wells: We can still do a lot more with the PS3. We have a very strong base to build on now and I think that you're going to see a bigger difference between Uncharted and our final game on this generation than you did between Jak 1 and Jak 3 (or X).

My only regrets for this game so far based on the demo are that you can't actually climb everything. You can climb a lot, but there are some incongruencies for stuff like when at one point you can very obviously climb up using the vegetation (if you take a hint from the game, it points you to it), but you can't climb very similar looking vegetation in other areas - in these cases you just helplessly jump up and look silly.

Agreed ! But I am kinda happy that they took this route and deliver a polished but less open game. The other option, given the limited time, would be like AC and Lair... where the game may be more open, but gameplay suffered. Regardless, I think if the teams persist, the next (few) iterations will deliver even better experiences.

Same thing with the wildlife, which is great, but I would have loved if you could kill the birds or the fish ... it's not important for the game, but again it gives you more of a feeling that you are actually there, something which is already so much stronger due to the swaying plants...

I actually hope that they just focus on one major gameplay improvements and the core experiences during the next iteration. e.g., open gameplay still with everything as polished. This will give them more time to add depth. The wildlife set can come later since they are not important to the experience (and Afrika is coming anyway).

OK, regarding the textures, I think people should wait until they see the actual game(or demo) for commenting on them. There is simply no video or screenshot that gives a hint of what the game has.

Before the demo, I thought ground was flat, ruins textures were low resolution and uninspired (bad color palette you may say :) ) but game looks nothing like that.

I generally don't understand the texture obsession we see often but for people who care a lot, this should be quite a treat (maybe besides some of the vegetation textures).

Maybe in a sequel, Drake could fight poachers.

Speaking of pirates, how about sea battles?

I don't mean Pirates of the Carribean but more like modern pirates who go after tankers, merchant ships, etc.

Being that as it may...I cannot wait to see the first Jak and daxster game!

Really? You wouldn't rather see them tackle a new IP? I love Jak, mind you, but the new IPs have been very refreshing (to go along with some of the superb sequels to established IPs). I'd like to see Insomniac and Naughty Dog both go after new IPs for their next games, after seeing how well they can handle it (Resistance and Uncharted).

"What aspect of the game are you least happy with and why?

Evan Wells: Well this is going to sound strange because it looks so nice, but I'd say the water. And not because there is anything wrong with it but very early in our design stages we wanted to do a lot more fluid dynamics that really affected gameplay. It was cut from the plan very early because of the technological challenges that it presented. But it's something that we want to take another stab at in a future title."

" As a developer, do Naughty Dog feel that optimising code to get rid of immersion-breaking anomalies like tearing etc are high on their list of priorities?

Evan Wells: Hah! I knew the screen tearing question was coming! We obviously take the look of the game very seriously and we want to create the most beautiful experience possible. So we walk a very fine line. We try to put as much on the screen as possible which of course has an impact on the framerate. If the game occasionally slips below 30FPS we have a choice to make... do you want to drop the framerate down to 20FPS or let the screen tear momentarily. We opted for the latter. It happens very infrequently and we feel that the increased number of polygons and effects that we can use outweighs the occasional artifact."

Agreed.

Interesting. Live Q&A going on now if you have any questions. http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=87721

Well for people living in the US, Gamestop has Uncharted in, at least here in San Francisco. Unfortunately I'm still stuck at work. What really annoys me is why those idiots that work there only order enough for pre-orders and maybe a handful of copies to sell to people without pre-orders. Talk about retarded.

Wait, so Uncharted only tears when framerate falls below 20fps? How does that work? Conditional V-sync? Never heard of such a feature on any hardware ever, so I'm calling BS.

The two options are "tear all the time" or "no tearing, but temporary, single frame durations of 20fps". I'd choose the latter any day of the week. Even with the former, parts of the screen are effectively dropping to 20fps temporarily.

No. You misread. Tearing is 28frames, 26frames etc. To remove that tearing you can drop to 20fps.

Conditional V-sync is done all the time and was even a standard part of the XBOX1 SDK (thats how common it is).
Its simple
Code:
if current frame time at end of frame < IDEAL_FRAMETIME
    v-sync on
else
    h-sync on
end
Some hardware supports it directly others need some timing/interupt based system.

My only regrets for this game so far based on the demo are that you can't actually climb everything.

I think my issue so far, play wise, is that it doesn't seem as complete as Tomb Raider Legend was. I finished that game, and aside from the usual running, climbing, shooting etc, it had nice puzzles in it. Stuff like put an object on one side of a seesaw type environment object, drop another object on the other size of the seesaw to hurl the first object to where you need it to be. Or the grappling hook which you can launch to grab a moving platform thats far away and pull it to you. Basically, puzzles where you can interact with the environment to solve a problem, which is what I thought made Tomb Raider Legend so cool. Maybe the final game will be different, but from the demo is seems like Uncharted will mostly be just climbing and shooting, kind of like the old Tomb Raider games used to be.

I would love for them to go with some fresh ideas for the series...Jak and Ratchet have a place inside this little dude!

It would be even cooler if they could hit new IP's like Incog did on the PS2 and keep pushing the Fav's.

Uncharted has puzzles (IIRC early Tomb Raider games had too)
Apparently though UDF puzzles are on the easy side, especially with Drake's Diary giving all the hints.

Which could be a downer for me...we'll see. I don't like to get too frustrated, but I do like to be challenge and think" wow that was really clever" once I've finished the puzzle.

Been playing the game for about 45 minutes now. There is some tearing and texture pop in. The jungle looks very lush. Smaller types of vegetation do not cast shadows which is stands out a bit. Ocean water looks fantastic. Storyline is very engaging so far.

Unfortunately, I never got those from the TR games either. I might enjoy the clever mechanics of a setup, but the actual puzzle-solving was pretty much "keep climbing/jumping in the only direction you can climb/jump, and try to find right levers to pull and sprockets to place," etc.

Maybe there'll be one or two things where the puzzle itself is fun and engaging, but I find myself more frustrated by them, where I'm always just looking around for "the thing to manipulate" and "guessing at what point I have to backtrack" or "finding the thing they're hiding behind scenery."

Having hints is ALWAYS a good idea, as random wander-guessing is just added boring time. Uncharted's two-stage hinting system seems to be a good compromise; after all, you certainly don't HAVE to use them, but it's nice to to be able to simply hit a button and look in the first "clue" direction, or check your diary if you want the broad puzzle/trap/location overview.
