Uncharted : Drake's Fortune*

I have not had time to read the full review, but I did take a quick peek at the subscores located at the end. I noticed the IGN reviewer gave the game a nine in graphics, indicating to me that they are superb although not without some minor faults. I do not have a Playstation 3, but from the screens and videos of the demo it seems pretty clear to me that Uncharted is without-a-doubt the best looking console game released thus far. If this is the case, then why didn't Uncharted score a 9.5 or 10 in graphics? Surely texture pop-up and tearing (very common in the current creme of the crop console games) could be overlooked in light of the sheer beauty of the game.

EDIT: Since I do not have a PS3, can anybody provide reference in this game looks in comparison to GeOW?

Graphically, Uncharted's beautiful as you tear down trees with turrets, watch Nate's clothes saturate with lagoon water and the sun filter through the leaves, but there is a lot of texture pop-in on the jungle floor and treasures while aliasing on the walls and screen tearing are par for the course. It shouldn't take you out of the experience, but it is noticeable.

Aliasing(shimmer?), tearing and pop-in are the complaints.

I saw no textures popping in the demo, maybe it happens in larger areas when more data has to be streamed ?
If it`s not too often then I will happily pay that price for having no loading times.

It isn't just uncharted. IGN also gave Assasins Creed a 8.5 in graphics. Considering clearly it's one of the most gorgeous games ever released on an overall scale, that's pretty odd.

It seems they detract too much for things like "flickering textures" or pop in and tearing, missing the forest for the trees. Uncharted and AC are clearly two of the best looking games yet released, yet get only 9.0 and 8.5 for graphics? Makes no sense.

i bet mario galaxy receives a 9 for GFX?

IGN gave SMG a 9.5 for graphics, halo3 got a 9, bioshock 9.5.

They don't really seem to have a fixed criteria for rating graphics and sound, its really just a reviewers impression of the graphical package I guess. If they want people to take those numbers seriously I guess they should move to a criteria, I personally rarely even look at those scores as they often just seem derived from an overall score (a means of justification perhaps).

You can't rate a Wii game against those on the PC, 360 or Xbox. It's been that way ever since reviews have been reviews - you take into account system limitations and whatnot.

Otherwise, how would DS or PSP get decent ratings? How would the PS2 have fared against the Xbox?

Though giving one of the top looking titles out there a 9 is a bit much... possibly the issues raised are more of an issue in the final game. It's a bit silly to say they're wrong when they're playing the game, and no one else here is :p Maybe have that discussion when you've actually played the finished product?

Aliasing(shimmer?), tearing and pop-in are the complaints.

Hmm, that's ironic. The only aliasing in the game I can think of seems to be HDR induced. I have seen some minor tearing, and no texture pop-in just yet, but I'm sure there will be areas where you do get these, and it may be worse when you're playing the full game from BluRay. Pretty good score though.

Exactly.

Here's a game brimming with originality, and it's getting slammed in multiple reviews for being too repetitive. How in the world you can give COD4 a 9.5, and then slam AC for being repetetive is beyond me...one is doing things that have never been done in a game before, and another is doing iteration #82739 of the same game mechanics...

I suspect, because in a FPS, originality isn't wanted and repetitive gameplay is not a problem, as that's the focus around FPS games. Start with few weapons, upgrade as you go along, get more challenging enemies etc. In a game like AC or Uncharted (I haven't played neither, except for the Uncharted demo), I would think that some elements found within that genre can become tiresome very quickly if it's all the same time and time again.
