The Last Guardian (Trico, Ico 3, Shadow of the Colossus sequel, etc.) [PS4]

They updated Trico's video...

Watching the huge creature twist and snuffle and root around in a large room as if trapped in a cage, I begin to understand why this game is taking so very long to make. Selling this being to the player as a living creature, giving its behaviour enough detail that you can read its moods and intentions, and programming its AI path-finding with a minimal reliance on scripting has been a monumental challenge, Ueda admits. "The most difficult thing is to get such a large AI character moving properly in such small, confined spaces."

At the end of the demo, the boy finds himself at the top of a tall shaft crossed by slender beams and bridges, with Trico visible far below. He calls to it with a wordless, echoing cry, but the creature doesn't hear, or doesn't want to. "Normally he jumps straight up. Seems like he's in a bad mood today," chuckles Ueda.

It's an awkward moment, but at least it proves Ueda's talk of a free-spirited, recalcitrant artificial intelligence powering the huge beast. This will be difficult to fine-tune correctly if Team Ico is to preserve Trico's unpredictability and electrifying presence – as bizarre as it looks, it's impossible not to regard Ueda's creation with awe – whilst making him biddable enough not to frustrate.

After half a minute of calling, Trico takes notice, and thunders up the shaft in a series of crashing bounds that shake the stone, finishing by towering above the small boy and lowering its huge eyes to his.

Reminds me of EyePet. Hopefully the team has time to tune the creature's response. Waiting for half a minute to get across a puzzle would be game breaking for me. ^_^

On a related note, wish they had modelled EyePet's behaviour after Trico. Would have benefitted from Ueda's years of work.

Damn, I really shouldn't read articles about that bloody game. I just picked up Majin and Dante's Inferno on the cheap, and what a surprise, all I want to play now is The Last Guardian. I guess I'm going to squint really hard whilst playing Majin. Maybe that'll fool my brain into thinking that I'm actually playing The Last Guardian. Afterall it seems to have rather similar mechanics. It just looks incredibly clumsy, dated and pedestrian by comparison.

The monkey face does give me a little uncanny valley effect. I think if they made the pet more predictable (Forget about the trainings !), and make it useful and fun, I'd be all over it.

I am a wee bit wary of training Trico the griffon too. It's a fine line to tread.

I do hope they improve the textures a little bit for the Team Ico remakes. I'd rather play them flat shaded in HD than with horrendous textures (by today's standards). Actually flat shaded would be pretty cool, not that i think about it.

Yeah.. how many games can say that? And Ueda did it twice.

TLG will be no different, I think.

Any update on when the HD remixes are releasing?

Indeed :D

Any game that can make a grown man feel an emotional connection with a horse is an instant winner in my book

Probably not the right thread, but has there been announced a release date for ICO/SOTC HD remake ?

Bumping this thread with a question should be a bannable offense. :p

Last I heard, sometime this year for all regions

Aw ! and I came here thinking something has been revealed !

We are also waiting for the HD collection eagerly ! I wish they package ICO, SOTC and The Last Guardian in a single disc , as a whole package ! I would love that and I think it will sell more that way !

Read on N4G that there were only 35 people in Team ICO, and that's why their game is taking so long..:-/ I knew they were a small studio, but didn't think they were that small.. :p

I knew it will be delayed :(. But that's OK since we have literally TONS of games coming out this year to hold me over, Skyrim and ME3 alone could hold me for a couple of centuries. If Ueda wants to live up to the 1st party quality then I say we let him.

I'm disappointed at the delay, but did expect it really.

I hope the SOTC/ICO hd collection still makes it this year though

Well, little dissapointed on the delay, but will pick it up when its finally out, as well as the HD collection.

Additionally, we wanted to confirm that The Last Guardian is not on the schedule for this year’s Tokyo Game Show. However we can assure you that Ueda-san and the rest of the development team are hard at work to bring his lofty vision to life and deliver the very best gaming experience possible.

I suspect getting the Griffon's AI to be consistently playable may be tricky. Can't wait to see the final outcome.
