The Big Forza 2 Thread *

They still havent learned how to model natural lighting :(

You can have the best car models with the best textures but if the lighting models crap, the game will look like crap.

i wouldn't say it looks like crap, but it certainly doesn't look as good as GTHD. polyphony is some tough competition though. I'd say that if this game looks better than PGR3 photo-mode that will be accomplishment enough.

I've noticed in some pictures the reflections are too dark when on top of bright areas of the car, making them pop out too much... they look busy and unclean. The shading has too much contrast and the highlights are too bright. It's also overly saturated with bright color giving it an almost cell shaded look. The backgrounds would look good if the colors weren't so bright. Forza 1 also had these problems so I don't really see them being fixed before it goes gold, but I can hope.

One thing I am confused about is the blurring. In the Forza site Che said the pictures were taken in-game while paused, not in photo mode. In a later post he said while playing the game the blurring will be turned off (something I've been hoping to hear). Does this mean that the pictures are taken in replay mode, and if so what other effects might be turned on, such as better AA, etc...?

Anyway, here are some images that I edited to explain my reasoning, it's not perfect, but it will do.

This one is of the original Forza 2 image of the Maserati MC12:

In this image I edited the lighting to look more realistic changing the things I mentioned a the begining of the post:

Here is an image of a real Maserati MC12:

And here I edited it to make it look like it was in Forza2 (it's a bit sloppy).

did you read the part where they have stated that the lighting and car shaders are not done yet?

From forzamotorsport homepage:

A quick note about screenshots in general. If you look at our screenshots gallery page, you'll notice that Forza Motorsport 2's overall lighting, and look of the car shaders varies wildly from one batch to the next.

Why is that? It's because each environment in Forza Motorsport 2 features its own unique ambience, tuned to a vision established by Turn 10's art director John Wendl and executed on by his art team. So for instance, Tsukuba has a searing high dynamic range mid-afternoon sun-baked exposure, while Mugello looks lush and green, almost cool to the touch. As we release more screens in the weeks to come, also keep in mind that car shaders and visual lighting are also some of the last settings to get tweaked (just like framerates). So even though we're creeping ever closer to release, consider these pics captured from a work-in-progress.

From forzamotorsport homepage:
I've read this and understand that the environments have different lighting, etc.... I was just hoping turn10 would make the games lighting look less like Forza 1's shaders. GT4 had more realistic lighting than forza 1 due to being toned down and wasn't overdone. Forza is my favorite racing game and I trust Forza2 to have very realistic physics, it would just be nice to have graphics as realistic as the gameplay.

I also prefer GT graphics over FM; however FM has better gameplay IMO due to better AI, online play, and damageable models. The only thing out of place for me is still the lighting in FM, the rest looks great, not the best but very doable; however, I will reserve final judgement until I actually play the game.

Is motion blur needed for games running at 60fps? I read somewhere that at 60fps it creates a similar effect to motion blur.

Maybe, maybe not???????

Che: "Let me just say this for the record: Motion Blur Will Not Turned On During Gameplay."

interesting... I read his comment about 2 months ago so that quote is more recent... but regarding your question about blur, he also answers that there...

The blur is caused mostly due to my crappy phone camera not being able to snap the game moving at 60fps without causing blur

My wish exactly, i hoped that they would try to make the graphics more realistics, aspecially after seing GTHD.

Oh well, maybe PGR4 will bring the graphcis ;)

The emphasis on allowing realistic tactile feedback from the physics engine to the controls makes me both very happy and very impatient.

In this quote Che is referring to the blur in the image in his post and not the ones IGN first posted. I wish they weren't so secretive about the info they release, but hey, it's got everyone talking whenever any new info comes out so I guess their strategy works.

To be fair, GTHD has 2D backgrounds and no damageable models, both I am sure would put higher load on the engine.

dunno, but how much quality would decrease when increased from 1 to 8???

8x the cars/effects will full AI is harder than one so my point (and my last since it's stupid for anyone to have even brought up GTHD in this thread) is that these are not comparable products at this time.
