PS3 Jail break

http://psx-scene.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64935

I don't condone hacking the system. I'm just posting for discusion on how it was done and what the ramifications are for future systems. It seems to me that many felt that the ps3 was hack proof and now it seems like it not longer is

PS Jailbreak is a USB plug and play solution that installs in seconds, keeping your valid warranty seal in tact.

Easy to use installer and GUI takes you step by step.

Compatible with all production models FAT and SLIM. Supports all regions: USA, JAP, PAL and KOREA

PS Jailbreak disables forced software updates and will never brick your console.

Supports all games (it does not allow backups of bluray movies , dvd movies , or past consoles games)

Backup games to your internal hard drive or external hard drive through USB, and boot directly off GUI. Eliminating the need for expensive blueray burners and costly blank media.

Play backups off your hard drives 2x as fast as off the blueray drive. This eliminates lags and glitches to provide you with smoother game play.

Open up your console to a new generation of homebrew applications. Load homebrew apps/games off any USB hard drive/flash drive.

Fully updatable with new features/updates by connecting PS Jailbreak to any computers USB port.

the link has images and movies btw

Too few info to go by.

They seem to exploit the system at a different level (avoid the Cell security, and go through an existing backdoor ?).

If true, would be interesting to see how Sony can react.

The gaming industry sure is exciting.

Don't think they need to do that.

If true...

In the worst case, they are already profitable at the hardware level. PS Move is also priced not to lose money. The OtherOS exploit has a cost element attached to the Linux support. They might strengthen PSN though. And of course, the standard firmware cat and mouse game.

I wonder how this will affect PS3 hardware movement. :p
... and software sales.

Just uploaded a video with it working. It was just uploaded 5 minutes ago so might still be processing. The person making the video stated that it takes a really long time to rip a bluray from the ps3.

Also some are speculating that this is an actual sony program that someone leaked out.

Well we don't know how profitable they are at the hardware level. What if its $5 or $10 or $15 thats not much profit.

However this usb drive is supposed to retail at $120. So i don't think it will do much to affect sony unless someone can dump the files and offer the files for free on torrent sites or for cheap online.

It's not ideal but at least it's not bleeding money. The rest will depend on currency, cheaper motherboard, farming the potentially larger user base, experiment with new business models, and patching.

Need to know how they do it. There are many possible situations. They may price high for the short term because the stuff on the USB dongle is easy to replicate by someone else. Or it may be a short term win (i.e., can be fixed easily by Sony). Or they are just greedy. :)

Ok we decided to stop the game we first tried as it was taking way way to long and have started on a second one, this one is going much faster and around 10% in 30min.

Again I think it maybe our console that's slow, Oz seems to be getting much faster rates than us. We have an old 60GB.

Once it's finished we will confirm it's booting and everything is working.

Looks like the newer ps3s have faster bluray drives in them. I still think that anyone serious about pirating will buy a fast bluray drive for a pc or just download iso's.

I personaly don't pirate. But would like some homebrew stuff and wouldn' mind installing games completely to the hardrive as not to scratch discs nand for what they claim is faster loading time

I just wanted to say. If something sounds too good to be true, it usually isn´t true.

I´d put a "possible scam" stamp on this one.

Yeah it could be just a re-encoded video of ratchet and clack at this point as he never showed gameplay. Still needs more proof at this point.

He isn't the only one claiming its real and multiple mod chip sites and importers are carrying the product. There will be more videos out in the next few hours and hopefully one of them will have the ps3 next to the tv.

I think sadly for those who don't wnat it to be true will be very disapointed.

How would they bybass the mandatory install of Ratchet? I think that comes right after the Insomniac logo anyway :|

Well... should focus on how it works in this thread. May be it'd be shut down, may be not. Doubting the findings does not mean they will be disappointed. We won't be in the loop anyway.

From what I saw so far, it doesn't look like they exploited a crash ? If this works, it looks like an existing backdoor has been found. The Cell security may think it's legit since they are using Sony leaked tools/keys ?

It has nothing to do with wanting it to be false. It has more to do with healthy skepticism. If we see proof of a game booting fully and running and it turns out to be reproducible then so be it. But nothing I've seen so far proves anything one way or the other yet.

Okay..so these people want to make some profit by selling these eventhough they don't have the basic right to use the SDK & its tools in the first place ?
I think I smell lawsuits.

Comments from reputable scene people:
Mathieulh: psjailbreak's so called "Backup Manager" (which is pretty much the only thing available to download on their website) is a debug package including a regular fself compiled with the (massively privately leaked) 1.92 sdk, The package itself is generated with Sony's official sdk tool (make_package_npdrm revision 1203 probably from that very same sdk) that makes it illegal to share because I am quite sure psjailbreak staff doesn't have the appropriate license to be using the official Playstation 3 SDK and its tools.

The binary itself seems to use the usual sce apis when it comes to the gui or copying files over. It does run on a debug console and displays a "nicely" done GUI that lets you "backup" your game to the external or usb hdd and "run" them later on.

Needless to say the backups wont "run" as their "backup manager" is just a regular fself running with game privileges and doesn't make use of any exploits that I can think of. Needless to say that if their so called usb dongle is real (which I doubt) it does extensive use of leaked sony's software and keys/certificates.

RichDevX: I hope nobody gave them money.

CJPC: Haven't tried it, but it looks like it will copy the game on a Debug PS3 but won't decrypt the executable... so, it's basically a giant "copy dev_bdvd/* hdd0/*" for lack of a better term.

I am just saying you shouldn´t jump on the buy-button. I´ve seen scams before and this looks like a possible one to me.

Did you place an order yourself?
