Swedish foreign minister stabbed

Joe,

I was certainly in a state of shock when I heard about the terrorist attacks, much more so than over this event, and pretty much the same level as when I like 7 years ago heard that a former classmate of mine committed suicide. The terrorist attack was completely unacceptable, and never did I say that such an act would be justified, not under any condition. With regards to 9/11 I have however raised my voice against completely ridicoulus ideas like "nuke afganistan" or "kill all muslims", neither that was particularly uncommon opinions unfortunately. In this context a similar action would be if we (under the pure speculation as it is right now that there's a political motive behind this) went berserk on everyone on the No side in the referendum. Or executed everyone in the extremist nationalistic parties. Or randomly shoot people that looks suspicious.

If someone brings up a discussion about what the possible reasons for this attack is, then that's fine. If they find that there's people that are seriously offended by her actions, then that's good as an explanation. But not as an excuse, and it would not justify the attack. People speculating over the possible cause of 9/11 aren't worse than that either. And finding a cause doesn't work as an excuse or justify the attack. I don't think anyone has pushed such ideas in this forum. Some people may have had opionion on how the process of finding those guilty have proceeded, or that innocent people have come in their way etc. And that's just fine. If someone puts forth opionions about the police actions in their work of finding the offender in Lindh's case that just fine too.

I'm not sure if you're aiming your post at me or anyone else, but judging where in the thread it occurred it feels like your aiming it at me. If that's the case I don't think you're doing me any justice at all.

As for the 9/11. When I write this it's 10 minutes left til september 11 2003 in my timezone. A separate memorial thread would definitely be in place. I don't think political disputes over 9/11 really fits a memorial thread, but it doesn't really belong in this thread either. I'd wait until at least september 12 if you want such a discussion, if indeed this is targetted at me in any way.

and what comes to real topic, this is definately sad thing. And even if it would not be a political assasination attempt, it surely does affect on EMU voting... which is again very sad. :(

Yes you’re right Nappe1 it is a sad thing and there need not be any apologies made for acts like this. It is sad when it is, one person or thousands of people. But in the wake of 9/11 there was this mass of idiot left wing terrorist apologists whom demanded that the US make an apology to the terrorists for murdering thousands of US citizens. Such a demand was argued here on this general discussion board IIRC..

To be clear, I was not accusing you of such. (Actually, I'm not accusing anyone of that. I don't think anyone but an easily ignored lunatic or terrorist member themselves would claim the act was directly justified.)

Be assured that I was not aiming it at you (or at anyone in particular for that matter.) My apologies if that's the way you took it.

Ok, that's what I hoped.

As for the actual topic, her situation is reported to be critical at the moment. Her liver supposedly was hit and damaged to some extent and she has lost a lot of blood.

The good news, there was plenty of surveillance cameras in the area, and the offense was likely caught on tape.

The Swedish police suck balls. How the fuck can they NOT find a guy dressed in army gear that was reportedly all bloodied up.

1.85 (meters) tall, wearing army gear, cap on his head, all bloody. Yeah that's one carachter that's REAL hard to find.

In any case, the injuries were not life threatening according to the latest reports.

At this time, Sweden should take a step back, consider Lindh's positions / views, and figure out what is so obviously wrong with them that someone could be driven to such extreme lengths to do this. Then take steps to rectify that situation by altering those positions, or at the very least apologizing to the attacker for having them.

I disagree. They should declare war on all those who are against joining the EMU und try to kill the perpetrator by dropping a shitload of cluster bombs on the areas where the anti-EMU guys congest.

After that they should invade Belgium just for the heck of it (and because they have great fries).

first Joe that was one of the best posts with a twist that I have read. Great way of making your point. :)

My best guess is that it's one of the extreme racial or nationalistic parties that's behind this, or just an action of an alone racist or nationalist, that think that joining the EMU and switching to euros would be a national disaster.

Can you elaborate on this please. Im not that familiar with swedish politics, but why would a racist sweed want to do this? thanks.

Probably because joining EMU can be seen as giving up national independence.

She's dead.

I didn't vote for her party. In fact, I belong to what is usually the opposite faction in Swedish politics (Folkpartiet, for those who are interested). But I can't find words for how big loss this is for Swedish politics - and that's not even starting taking family and friends into account.

And please take the 9/11 rhetorics somewhere else. I don't care how righteous they might be. They don't belong here. Not now.

Oh my, this sucks. :( She was the number one candidate for taking over the state minister post, if her party would have won the next election.

Very bad news :(. Was in NK about a month ago when visiting Stockholm.. Also visited where Olaf Palma was murdered. Suppose this is the price politicians pay for being very open.

Sad.

But let this be a lesson: we need tougher knife control laws. 7 day waiting periods, background checks, and no one should be allowed concealed carry. And of course, a ban on "Assault Knives" Are Rambo-style knives constructed for any purpose other than killing people?

Remember, Knives don't kill people, people do. If you take away our knives, only outlaws will have them.

(sorry, I couldn't resist following in Joe's footsteps)

Lol @ DemoCoder. ;)

Seriously though what would the motivation be to attack this lady? Who would have such a hate for her in terms of political motivations?

What a horrible way to die. Shame.

As a side note it is a bit of a peeve for me about Sweden that there is no news that covers Sweden in English.
