Virtua Fighter shouldn't count, as it was a remake of the arcade version so they were trying to get that low quality look.

A big improvement would be Mario64 to Banjo-Tooie.

That's really arguable, seeing how the first Saturn version of Virtua Fighter is a graphical rendering mess. The game can be seen as an ode to bugs and others glitches.

The Saturn is a perfect example of technical and graphical improvement made over time. The difference between the (3D) launch games and the game released near the end of the machine is quite impressive.

Well, I asked if virtua fighter was the best looking 1st gen title, and supposendly it was.

BTW, wasn't conker a better looking game than banjo-tooie? In that case, Mario 64 to Conker would be an even bigger improvement. Hmm, now that I think about it, there were some neat effects in mario 64 that I don't recall seeing in most n64 games, only later rare games seemed to incorporate the effects mario 64 used along with complex and detailed environments and characters.(well, actually I just recall the metal mario effect, but I'm sure there were more.....maybe the shimmering of the paintings?)
 
banjo tooe and conkers used the 4 meg upgrade cart its not really fair to compare
conker's BFD didn't, and it's leaps and bounds more impressive (graphicly) than mario 64. it also gave me motion sickness from the irratic framerate, but that's another story.

I actually think conker was one of the higher framerate games on the n64. Certainly leagues beyond games like perfect dark and the entire turok series.

So not only did conker not use the 4 meg expansion, it also ran in high res, and had what I'd consider a decent framerate for the n64. It never got the point where it was unplayable, while many other n64 games did.

Yeah, but Mario64 came out in 1996, and Conker in 2001. Compared next to pc gaming, which went from Duke Nukem3d to Max Payne and an entire 3d card revolution, it's not that impressive. I remember the first time I fired up quake2 on my voodoo1 and I was speechless for days. I called my friends and was like "you gotta see this!!!" It was very hard for me to take ps1 or n64 serious after that.

So my vote goes to IBM PC from 1996 to 1997-8 was the most improved. For the record I rarely touch my PC for gaming anymore. Working in the industry makes you not wanna go home after 14 hour day and get on a PC. (except to troll some forums)

Except the PC went through substantial hardware upgrades.

If you're going to compare, compare quake GL versus quake 3 running on a voodoo 1.

Besides, all 3 consoles also had duke nukem 3d on them, so they could use that as a starting point too.(the original quake was out in 1996 I believe, in fact, your quake 2 picture is a picture of quake 1)
 
i think a nice metric for how far the saturn went is the panzer dragoon series. the series started out looking solid with PD1 and went on to become (imho) one of the nicest looking saturn games released with PDS. zwei is (graphicly) right in the middle, and was one of the better looking games for it's time as well.

i really don't think developers are that eager to push modern hardware like they did in the past. it's not worth if for them on many fronts, the least of which being that if they push the hardware too much, and the game has frequent framerate issues, it could effect sales. middleware and progaming with cross platform releases in mind has a lot to do with it as well.
