Still a lot of juice left in the current gen hardware

I think the one console that was truly maxed out by the end of its life was the SNES. It was doing some ridiculous things graphically by the time the N64 came around that everyone thought were absolutely impossible on 16bit systems.

True, but its not the same with the older systems since ROM carts sizes kept getting bigger during their cycles. The devs in 1995 had more memory space to work with than devs in 1990. Now that isn't such an issue. I think the most milked system was the ps1 as far as quality arc went. I'd throw the NeoGeo in there somewhere also.

N64 probably still wasn't that close to its theoretical max, but I'd say it probably deserves the award for most improved.(then again, the nes, snes, and genesis all had huge increases in graphical quality from the 1st games to the last)
Actually, PSX improved a lot too considering the early stuff was 32x quality.
Hmm, ps2 improved a lot as well.

Ok, maybe most improved is too hard of an award to give out, but I think I could safely give gamecube least improved.(many of its later games look significantly worse than early stuff!)

I don't think you'll find any system that had as huge a leap as the SNES had when it went from Pilotwings/Super Mario World/F-Zero to DKC 1-3/Yoshi's Island/Paper Mario/etc.

launching with games like Home Alone, the SNES had nowhere to go but up

saturn , we went from virtual fighter to virtual fighter 2 , knights , burning rangers , panzer dragoon saga

I don't know, I think games like Doom 3, Half-Life 2 and Halo 2 are really pushing the Xbox hard.
i can agree with that. i think people look at things the wrong way when it comes to this most of the time anyway. just because a game uses 100% of a piece of hardware's polygon thoughput (or 100% cpu, ect) doesn't mean that's the proper way to code stuff. hell, i think i could write a simple calculator program that's coded so poorly that it take 100% of the xbox's cpu time.

just because you are stressing the hardware doesn't mean it's a good thing.

Except early PSX and N64 efforts were just as bad, and ended up better.

Lies! That was not a launch game.

Well, not with the whole topic, but I was talking about systems that showed the most improvement. This topic was about systems coming close to their max though.(in which case I'd say the saturn was still very far off, due to the nature of being an inefficient multiprocessor system)

I dunno about that the saturn had alot of problems so it was limited by the hardware not the developers really . Alot of the power was cut off by crappy set up of the hardware .

Anyway i dare you to find me a jump graphicly in the same lvl of the vf to vf 2 jump that sega had

Are you talking from a franchise or from a single platform? Just Tekken to Tekken 3 (even better, Tobal 2 ;) )was a massive improvement (although it was more gradual with Tekken 2 in between)... Or try comparing Ridge Racer to GT or GT2...

platform

While ridge racer to gt and gt3 is big its not close to the jump from vf to virtual fighter 2 .

Man, I remember those days.

I remember wanting the Saturn to kick ass and then I saw VF1 and compared it to Toshinden. What a bummer it was.

Then VF2 came out and I was blown away but by then it was too late. It's funny you bring up VF2 because a few months ago we were having a little unofficial VF2 tournament here at work (in my office I have a console museum - w00t!). Ah, what a great game that is.

Ridge Racer to Gran Turismo 1 or 2 is a wholly laughable statement. Ridge Racer to R4 shows an amazing improvement without pixels throwing all over the place.

sorry about the quality its hard to find pics from the old consoles

Well, I guess it is kind of hard to have a bigger improvement than going from no texturing to actually having texturing, but was Virtua Fighter the best looking saturn game at the time?(cause honestly, I could probably find 1st gen psx games that still looked worse)

ya it was . Most of the other games were 3d chars on 2d backrounds for side scrolling that look really bad too .
